Pastor’s Message Lessons learned during my half century on this planet:

In my homily on the weekend on March 3 and 4, I used the following excerpts from Phyl Bean, attorney at Phyl Bean Law,

originally found on Quora. I spoke about the 10 Commandments and how if we can remember #1, “You shall not have other

gods besides me” all else will fall into place. I was asked by a number of people to share this. It has helped me. I hope it does

you, as well!

Here are some lessons I've learned during my half century on this planet:

1. Be kind. The benefits of being kind--or at the very least courteous--far outweigh the effort you put in. Do random acts of

kindness. Compliment someone. If a retail or food-service worker makes a mistake, be understanding and patient. Kind

people live longer than unkind people.

2. I know myself better than anyone else. I don't let anyone else's opinions control what I do, what I wear, or what I say. (EXCEPT

FOR GOD’S. This was my addition!) Other people's opinions are suggestions--take them or leave them.

3. Everyone else is as worried and insecure as you are. Some people just hide it better. It doesn't mean that they are any smarter or

better than you.

4. Laugh it off. If you make a mistake, fall down, or do something dumb, just laugh it off. Other people (and you) will forget it a lot

faster if you just let it roll off your back. EVERYONE makes dumb mistakes. Everyone. You aren't alone, and you aren't the

biggest idiot in the world. Give yourself a break.

5. It's just stuff. Sure, stuff gets broken--oftentimes accidentally by people you love--and that's annoying. But your stuff can be

replaced. You can never erase the hurtful words you say to the person you love because they broke your stuff. Stuff is never,

ever as important as those you love.

6. You're probably a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for being.

7. Don't judge. You don't know all the facts. That lady speeding down the road with her toddler unbuckled in the back seat may be

panicked, heading for the hospital for an emergency that you can't see. That "big kid" having a "tantrum" in the store may be on

the autism spectrum, and is having a meltdown, which he or she hates as much as you do. We all have our faults and bad habits.

As a pretty famous guy is alleged to have said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

8. Don't beat yourself up. Do what you can to fix your mistakes, then move on. Guilt is only good for pushing you toward making

things right again. After that, it becomes shame, and shame is a toxic substance that will eat you up inside. Same for worry.

9. Enjoy life. Literally, stop to smell and admire the flowers. Wonder. Smile at strangers and see how many you can get to smile

back. Have fun.

10. Life goes by really, really fast. Live each day so that, at the end, you're reveling in how amazing your life was, not regretting all the

things you did or didn't do.

The Anniversary of our Diocese – Part II by Father Edward Quinlan

Pastoral care for Catholics settling in the original 13 colonies was first entrusted to Jesuit priests from England and later some

from Germany. Parishes and missions were under the supervision of the Diocese of London as these were English

colonies. With the end of the Revolutionary War and our official separation from England, as memorialized in the Treaty of

Paris in 1783, the time was ripe for the formal foundation of the Church in our new country. Pope Pius VI in 1790 will

create the Diocese of Baltimore and appointed Father John Carroll as the first bishop. The diocese included all of the

United States at the time. The new diocese was estimated by Bishop Carroll to have 25,000 Catholics and he had 25 priests

to serve them. The US population was about 4 million at that time.

The new country was open for business and by 1830 began to grow rapidly. Immigration was slow at first then significantly

increased in the 1830’s. Many Germans were among those arriving in this wave. By 1845 large numbers of Irish were

coming to the US to flee starvation in their native land. With succeeding decades the new arrivals were coming from central

and southern Europe as well. This was significantly increasing the Catholic population in the country.

By 1808 Pope Pius VII creates Baltimore as an Archdiocese, dividing it to form the dioceses of Boston, New York,

Philadelphia and Bardstown (Ky). Philadelphia at this time encompasses the whole state of Pennsylvania. Our central

Pennsylvania homeland is part of this early diocese, and we are blessed to be able to account as one of our bishops, Saint

John Neumann. By way of note, his relics are encased in our main altar. In time, the state will see other dioceses created

from the western counties, Pittsburgh (1843) and Erie (1853).

On March 3, 1868 Pope Pius IX will direct that the dioceses of Scranton and Harrisburg be created from the territory of

Philadelphia. A young priest, assigned as the rector of the minor seminary in Philadelphia, will be appointed as the first

Bishop of Harrisburg, Father Jeremiah Shanahan.

Hospital Admissions: Please notify the Church Office if you or

your loved one is admitted to the hospital. We have missed

visiting several of our parishioners because we were not

notified by the hospital’s Pastoral Staff office that they were

admitted. It is important for you to tell the staff on your floor

that you want your parish notified about your admission. This

will enable our parish nurse/pastoral staff to contact you. You

will also be able to get Holy Communion regularly while you

are in the hospital if the Pastoral Office has you on their list.

Best Foods to Keep on Hand in Your Refrigerator

It is wise to plan ahead for those times you when you get

hungry and start looking for something to eat. Here are

suggestions for the best foods to keep on hand in your fridge

for those hungry times:

Turkey- High in protein, low in fat and sodium. Wrap in

whole-wheat tortilla for a snack.

Hummus- Low in calories and fat, high in protein and

fiber. Use with vegetables.

Eggs- loaded with nutrients such as vitamin D, amino

acids that the body needs to make cells work. It is a high-

quality protein.

Salsa- healthy and easy to make. Use on egg dishes, put on

baked potato instead of butter, use on salad instead of oily

dressings.

Kale- one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. It

is low in calories. Use in salad or for side dish.

Seltzer- Good low- calorie drink with fizz. Add a little fruit

juice and it makes a nice replacement for high calorie

sugary drinks.

Plain yogurt- loaded with calcium, high quality protein and

probiotic bacteria which is good for your gut.

Celery- loaded with fiber, folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, and

potassium. Eat as snack with peanut butter or hummus,

add to soups, salads.

Avocado- full of “good” fat that is good for cholesterol

levels.

Whole-wheat tortillas- low in calories and fat. Fill with

grilled vegetables, beans, salsa and shredded cheese.

Cabbage- Packed with fiber, potassium, magnesium and

vitamin C. Make coleslaw.
