  • March 1, 2020First Sunday in Lent

  • As you entered the Sanctuary this morning, you may have noticed that the room seems a bit darker than usual. At Wilshire, these darkened windows are a sign that we have entered into a new holy season — Lent. Mirroring the 40 days of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, the season of Lent is the 40-day period in the Christian calendar that leads us to Easter — 40 days to reflect, repent and recommit to a deeper relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The darkened windows are a quiet reminder of the invitation to reflect on the dark and shadowy parts of our souls. The darkness also reminds us of the pain of what is to come as we journey with Jesus toward the cross.

While Lent can be a deeply spiritual time for many who engage in its practices — with many Christians choosing to observe forms of fasting, prayer or acts of service for 40 days — there is a danger that accompanies Lent as well. As we enter the dark and somber nature of this season, we run the risk of reinforcing the idea that our faith is ultimately about us and us alone, that the walk to the cross is to be taken in isolation.

Although certain aspects of Lent, and any Lenten discipline, require self-reflection and self-awareness, we must not enter that endeavor believing it is only about our individual experiences. We are reminded over and over again that the journey of life, the walk to the cross and

the experience of resurrection is a communal one — together we often turn on one another and away from God, and together we can experience forgiveness, repentance and new life.

So as we sit together in the darkened Sanctuary this morning, may we remember that we walk this Lenten road together. Let’s think about our Lenten journey as a collective of individuals, each discerning God’s hopes and intentions for our personal lives while seeking freedom and justice for the entire beloved community. Let’s make this a time that is about ourselves and our own reflection, but also about one another, about all of us and ultimately all about God.

Let us commit this morning to journey this darkened road together, until that Easter morning when the shutters are flung open once more and we sing, “Alleluia” as the light rushes in. May this Lenten season be for you, and for all of us, a holy time in which we, the gathered community, journey together more deeply into God’s love for us all.

Prelude Wondrous Love arr. Frank VoltzCarla Siegesmund, harp

Call to Worship Sing Me to Heaven Daniel GawthropShekinah

    Ralph Manuel, accompanist

In my heart’s sequestered chambers lie truths stripped of poet’s gloss. Words alone are vain and vacant and my heart is mute.

In response to aching silence, memory summons half-heard voices, And my soul finds primal eloquence and wraps me in song.

If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby. If you would win my heart, sing me a love song.

If you would mourn me and bring me to God, sing me a requiem, sing me to heaven. Touch in me all love and passion, pain and pleasure, touch in me grief and comfort.

Sing me a lullaby, a love song, a requiem. Love me, comfort me, bring me to God: Sing me a love song, sing me to heaven.

Opening Sentences Lindsay Bruehl / Kile Brown

Today is the first Sunday in the season of Lent. We join together now to seek God’s presence not only around us but also within us. We pray together:

God be in my head and in my understanding;God be in my eyes and in my looking;God be in my mouth and in my speaking;God be in my heart and in my thinking;God be at my end and at my departing.

As we seek God’s presence, we also are reminded that the darkness is coming, that Jesus’ betrayal looms near. To help us remember this coming darkness, we extinguish the first in a series of Lenten candles, illustrating that the forces of this world seek to put out the light of Christ. Even as the darkness comes, may God be in us.

+Hymn Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days st. anne

Greeting to Worshipers Darren DeMent / Heather Mustain

Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service.

You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today.

Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on anintercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate.

Reading — Psalm 32:6–11 Britt McClung / Larry Granberry

Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you. Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

Resources provided include curriculum for leaders and students, pens, pencils, paper, glue, scissors, tape, white boards, markers. +Gospel Reading — Matthew 4:1–11 Gina Ortegon / Amanda Mintz

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of Tiffany Wright and in celebration of her 20 years of ministry at Wilshire by Alan and Cayton Wright and M. Joan Terry.

Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by. You also are invited to a coffee reception in James Gallery immediately after the service.

Children welcome here. Parents of children in kindergarten and older are encouraged to bring their children with them to worship, because at Wilshire our worship experience is intergenerational and formative of lifelong habits. Worship care with loving workers is available for preschoolers younger than kindergarten age. To find the secure check-in station, follow the signs behind the Sanctuary or from the north entrance.

Someone to talk with. If you are facing a life challenge and would like to have a spiritual friend to walk alongside you for a season of healing, perhaps you would benefit from a Stephen Minister. Learn more at wilshirebc.org or contact Micki Lacker at (214) 452-3176.

    Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

You’re invited to dinner with new Wilshire friends — but you won’t know who they are until you arrive at your assigned destination on Saturday, April 4. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is an annual Wilshire tradition that helps us meet fellow members we don’t normally encounter in a large church. A few days before the event, you’ll receive an email with the identification of your hosts and their address. The gatherings are intergenerational and informal and will be convenient to where you live; we even have a host home in Fort Worth this year. Space is limited so sign up today. Cost is $10 per person. Sign up and pay online at wilshirebc.org/registration.

    Lenten devotional book

You are invited to join the congregation in reading a new book of brief daily devotionals during the Lenten season. The book, God Be in My Head, is built around an ancient prayer known as The Sarum Prayer. The five-line prayer begins, “God be in my head and in my understanding.” The book is written by Michigan pastor Ken Wilson. Its daily reflections and prompts are simple and straightforward and appropriate for older children, youth and adults. Copies of the book are available in the church office for $5 apiece. A digital version of the book also is available from Amazon.

    New member: Harley Courtney.

    Contemplative retreat

“Creating Sacred Spaces” is the theme for this year’s contemplative retreat, organized by Wilshire members and others each spring. The dates are Friday, April 24, through Sunday, April 26. Registration deadline is Friday, April 8. Location is Arrowhead Camp, near Glen Rose. Brochures with full details are available in the church office or online at wilshirebc.org/registration. The structure for the retreat is intentionally open. The group will gather on Friday evening for a time of fellowship followed by a shared meal. Leadership for the weekend will be shared by laity. Saturday will be spent in intentional quietness, with optional experiences available including guided prayer, creative expression, yoga, praying Scripture, and prayer for personal healing and restoration.

    Housing stabilization program

Anyone interested in joining a new missions initiative on housing stabilization for the homeless is invited to a training session on Monday, April 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. This will be led by Wilshire mission partner Austin Street Center as part of a nationwide pilot program to utilize volunteers to phone individuals recently housed through Austin Street. Each year the center houses nearly 400 individuals, but as an organization they do not have the capacity to remain in contact. Volunteers will call and run through a simple survey with individuals to make sure any housing concerns are brought to the immediate attention of a case manager. Volunteers will be asked to make at least 10 calls a week, which takes about an hour of time and may be done from anywhere. For more information, contact Heather Mustain at [email protected] or (214) 452-3110.

Faith in 3-D is March 6 and 7

“Lighting the Way,” Wilshire’s 2020 Faith in 3-D production, will be presented on Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Community Hall.

In association with Climate Change Theatre Action, the evening will be anchored by 10 brief plays written by an array of international playwrights, interspersed with music and exposition. From wildly funny to deadly serious, the plays explore consequences and remedies concerning climate change, wildlife extinction and the devastation of natural resources.

Thirty-three Wilshire performers will combine their talents to present this theatrical event in 3-D: drama, dessert and dialogue.

The event is free and open to the public. Preschool child care will be provided on Friday, March 6.
