MARCH 25, 2012 . FIFTH SUDAY OF LET

Every year farmers go through the same cycle in an effort to reap a har-

vest. They prepare the ground, plant the seed, work to prevent weeds from over-coming the crop, do what they can to nurture the plants, and reap a harvest at theend of the growing season. Even for the few months that the ground lies fallow, farmers work to complete the sale of what the earth has produced and to preparefor the new season. Farmers in the field and scientists who support the work ofagriculture know intimately the truth of Jesus' words in today's Gospel, "Unlessa grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; butif it dies, it produces much fruit."

In the last half century there has been a transformation in agriculture. Of-ten called the "green revolution," the series of initiatives to breed high-yieldingseeds, intensively use fertilizers, and channel irrigation to crops has helped to

alleviate, though not eradicate, world hunger. The green revolution also has itscritics, who contend that the long-term effects will be more destructive ratherthan helpful. Despite this criticism, modern farming practices seem firmly entrenched on producing the high-est yield possible from the acreage that is planted.

Whatever one's view on long-term sustainability of contemporary agriculture, the desire for a "highyield" in the spiritual life is what we are after in this Lenten season. The seed of fasting is that dying to selfthat we plant at the beginning of Lent. We nurture the growth of our life in Christ with the prayer that we ac-tively pursue throughout the forty days. And we bring forth a spiritual harvest through the almsgiving thatcharacterizes our love of neighbor. Like the farmers who year after year till the soil, plant the seed, and reapthe harvest, Lent is our growing season. Will we be ready to reap an abundant harvest on Easter?
