What is GPC?
• A system that gives buyers and sellers a common language for grouping (or categorising) products in the same way, everywhere in the world
• Improves the GDSN data accuracy and integrity, speeds up the supply chain's ability to react to consumer needs, and contributes to breaking down language barriers.
• Since 2007, GPC adoption has grown in coverage and in implementation (in parallel with the use of GTINs) in GDS
• GPC is published in Oxford English and translated by Member Organisations to 12 other languages
© GS1 2015
How does it Work?
• GPC is a rules-based, four-tier classification system for grouping products
• The four tiers are Segment, Family, Class, and Brick (with attributes and attribute values)
• A Brick identifies a category incorporating products (Global Trade Item Numbers - GTINs) that serve a common purpose, are of a similar form and material, and share the same set of category attributes

GPC Releases
• GPC uses a “Consolidated Release” strategy to publish twice per year, (every June and December)
• Each GPC release is implemented into GDSN 6 months after publication (allows impacted Data Pools and Trading Partners time to update their systems)

Products database
Collecting information about
products
GS1 Russia has been collecting information about products of GS1 Russia Members since it was founded in 1990.
And now products database has considerable amount of unique information about products which is used 460-469 range of GTINs.
Implementation of GS1 standards
Products database was updated due to business process reengineering in 2010.
Results of reengineering:• A set of attributes is
updated according to GS1 TSD
• Internal classification system is replaced with GS1 GPC
Usage of GS1 GPC
Implementation of GS1 GPC standard drove us to create GPC project team working on the following:• Localization of GPC into
Russian language• Handling suggestions
and requests from GS1 Russia Members to improve GPC

Problems in mapping• Local standards use different principles to classify products.
• Some sections of local standards don’t separate products by consumable life.
• Local standards classify production waste (e.g., perfume base, animal skin), which are not described in GPC. These products are usually used to produce other products.
• OKPD2 standard classify not only products, but services too. GPC does not describe services now.

Implementation GPC in GS46
Today we use GPC as a main classifier in GS46. Each brick is connected with set of GDSN attributes.
We help GS1 Russia Members to classify their products according to GPC and improve GPC to meet MO’s objectives.
18
© GS1 2015
Automated classificationWe work on implementation of automated classification in GS46 based on the following:• Find GPC brick for product by searching key words in product’s
attributes.• Find code of Local Standards for product by using results of
mapping GPC to Local Standards.
Automated classification will facilitate classification of products into GPC in GS46.

GPC introduction material
We’ve localized a new e-learning module “Basics of Global Product Classification (GPC)” into Russian. You can watch it here.
And we keep working on localization of introduction material for GPC.

Using of GPC in Russia
Information System “Mercury” wants to use GPC as a main global classification system.
“Mercury” is a state information system of Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (www.fsvps.ru) which controls agriculture and animal areas.
Information about “Mercury” is available only in Russian now: www.fsvps.ru/fsvps/foremployees/mercury.
