Seal IslandIsland is generally locatedat:Lat. 60º 25.64 NLon. 147º 24.74 W
Free-oil Recovery- OpenWater
Maximize free-oil recovery inthe offshore & nearshoreenvironment of Seal Islanddepending on spill locationand trajectory.
Deploy open water free-oil recoverystrike teams upwind and up current ofSeal Island.
Use aerial surveillance to locate incomingslicks.
Deploy multiple open water free-oilrecovery strike teams as required tomaximize interception of oil before itimpacts sensitive areas.
Vessel platform Marine
Chart 16705-1.
Same as PWS-SW01-02
Vessel master should have localknowledge.
Rocky outcrops surround muchof the island.
Northeast and East shorescollect and could hold oil so itis important to deflect awayfrom these areas.

Actual location of thisprotection strategy willdepend on field assessment atthe time of a spill.
Deflection-Live
Deflect oil from Seal Islandand back into the channel forcollection.
Transport equipment to site by vessel(class 2/3/4).
Place three 660 ft. sections of open waterboom and hold in place with fishingvessel (class 3/4).
Position boom at adequate angle todeflect oil from Seal Island and set up foropen water free-oil recovery.

Marine mammals- sealhaulout (W. side),harbor seals, sea otters
Birds-seabird &shorebird nesting (N.&E. shores April- Oct.),eagle nests, seabirdfeeding (year-round)
Habitat-intertidalresources.
Vessel master should have localknowledge.
Two reefs could createopportunity to trap oil if birdsare not present.
Reefs are exposed at low tide.
A 500’ minimum separationdistance from marine mammalsmust be maintained.
Significant current on eitherside of island, flowing south, contributes to draining pattern.
Heavy surf is possible.
Fixed deflection boom shouldbe evaluated at the time of spill.
