Mantras, Prayers and Affirmations
• There are the physical tools of meditation, such as: zafu cushions, Yoga mats,
meditation timers, gongs, music, candles, incense, pictures, mandalas, mala beads,etc. There are also the more spiritual tools of meditation, those such as: mantras,
prayers, affirmations, visualizations, imagination, and so on. To follow, the reader
will be introduced to the spiritual tools of meditative practice.
• A mantra is a religious syllable, word or phrase that is uttered by one, most often
in religious and non-religious meditative practice, of significant meaning to theindividual uttering the syllable, word or phrase. Having origins in the ancient
religion of Hinduism as well as having been further developed as a meditativetool in certain schools of Buddhism, a mantra is used to help one achieve a
particular meditative state. For example, there is the classic “OM” of classic
Indian religion (i.e., Hinduism). There is also the “OM MANI PADME HUM” of Tibetan Buddhism.

• Though these particular syllables and phrases have meaning within the religious
context one finds them, one can utilize a mantra individually crafted such that the
syllable, word or phrase has meaning to one personally. The key is that themantra is a tool of channeling consciousness upon the goal of the meditation such
that this particular goal is more readily achieved by utilizing the mantra.
• Prayer is often a utilized as a tool of meditation, especially in the Western theistic
tradition (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). Prayer is typically referred to as the
act of communicating with deity, however prayer need not be between an
individual and a deity. Prayer can also be viewed more broadly as a form of verbal meditation. For example, though not praying to any deity per se, certain of
the traditions of Buddhism often recite “May I become able to help all beings
today” during their meditation sessions. They are not asking any god or God to
grant this but stating this as a request such that their minds become conditioned toreceive that which they are asking for in their daily lives.
• Affirmations are often utilized in meditative practice as well to help one achieve,not only a particular state of meditation or consciousness, but also behaviors
which are resultant of the practice. An affirmation is a positive statement of fact
about a facet of one’s life such that he or she desires it to come to pass. Suchaffirmations are often utilized in meditative practice as: “I will become enabled to
be kind to all people,” “I will love my spouse more today,” “I will become more
focused and productive,” etc. Such statements of one’s desire as fact can be a
catalyst for achieving the desired result in one’s life.
• Meditation can be as simple or as complex as one would have it be. Though
keeping it relatively simple is often best, the addition of one or more of the
spiritual tools of meditation can help one to achieve new states of mental fitnessonly previously imagined.
