Manningham Seniors Festival is supported by the Victorian Government as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival - the theme for 2019 is Get into it.
As part of the Victorian Seniors Festival, we‘re delighted to bring you a jam-packed program of Council and community run-events (mostly free or low cost) throughout the month of October.
I am always pleased to acknowledge the achievements of our Senior Citizens and at this year’s Civic Awards, we recognised Hardy Shum as ‘Citizen of Year’. Hardy has been actively involved with the Chinese senior citizens building a community and a sense of home for new immigrants over the past 23 years.
The festival is a wonderful opportunity to have some fun, try something new and make friends. You will find many of our clubs, community groups and organisations are hosting special events, we’ve listed some in this program. We’re delighted to launch this year’s festival on Wednesday 2 October with a special Wine and Cheese Music Evening – All you need is love! a tribute to the Beatles with the Australian Beetlez Show. Get your dancing shoes on and join in the fun.
Once again, we’re hosting a Seniors Morning Tea and partnering with Victoria Police to present a Senior Safety and Wellbeing Café Chat at MC Square. Learn about safety and wellbeing topics including safety in the home and staying safe online.
To get the most of what’s happening throughout Manningham’s Seniors Festival, read our program booklet and register early for events and activities.

MAYOR’S WELCOME
33
Hardy has been actively involved with the Chinese Senior Citizens in Manningham for the past 23 years and has led the Club as President for the past 15 years.
Hardy has given new migrants in an unfamiliar country peace of mind, a sense of belonging and cultural identity and the feeling of care and support. Over the 23 years he has built the Chinese Senior Citizen’s Club into a place to forge new bonds of kinship, friendship, community and a sense of home. This counters the social isolation and loneliness that can threaten the mental and physical wellbeing of senior adults.
He made a commitment to use his own experience to help ease the transition for newcomers from Asia to Australia, so that they could set up a fulfilling and purposeful life, and call our country home.

Dementia Friendly ManninghamManningham has been recognised for ‘working towards a Dementia-Friendly Organisation’ by Dementia Australia’s Dementia Friendly Communities program.
We are committed to improving the way our services meet the needs of residents living with dementia, so they can be supported to stay in their homes and communities longer.
In 2015, we established the Manningham Local Dementia Alliance Group (MLDAG) and
have taken the lead role to work through a number of key actions, including a range of activities to raise community awareness. Last year we launched our Dementia Information Card in partnership with MLDAG.
An estimated 436,000 people live with dementia in Australia. Without medical breakthroughs, this number is projected to reach 1.1 million by 2058. According to Dementia Australia, approximately 70 per cent of
people with dementia continue to live in the community. Our aim is to support them to remain active participants in our community and to have a good quality of life.
