School Phone Line Fault Unfortunately we still have only one phone line (9948 1959) into the school operating (until the second line can be repaired). We appreciate your continued patience.

Teaching and learning/ Visible Learning at Manly West PS Our teachers and students are all using Visible Learning Strategies across all curriculum areas. Some of the Visible Learning language includes Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and this year we are focusing on Feedback systems to support student learning. Feedback includes teacher feedback to students, student feedback to teachers and peer feedback. The teachers may provide rubrics to assist students with knowing ‘where to next’ with their learning. “Visible teaching and learning occurs when there is deliberate practice aimed at attaining mastery of the goal,

when there is feedback given and sought, and when there are active, passionate, and engaging people (teacher, students, peers) participating in the act of learning.”

We will continue to update you about Visible Learning in the grade newsletters, meetings, the newsletter and P&C meetings. K Transition to School From Monday 17th February, Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 3:20pm on the regular school bell. As there are many more parents collecting students at this time, please allow time for parking and note the parking signs in the streets surrounding the school. For safety reasons, the ‘Kiss and Drop Zone’ is not an option for parents of Kindergarten students for afternoon

‘pick up’ unless an arrangement is made by a parent with the classroom teacher for an older sibling to fulfil this

role.

Medical Needs

Please ensure the school is aware of any medical needs your child may have. It is the responsibility of parents to provide updated health plans, action plans and medicine to the school and this is tied to your child’s enrolment. Please note, Anaphylaxis Action Plans need to be in colour, on the most recent form provided by ASCIA (currently 2020), dated 2020 by a doctor and include a colour photo of your child. Thank you to parents who have already visited the office with an updated Health Plan and Action Plan this year. Please also ensure that your child’s medication is current.

If you have not yet visited the office to provide your child’s health care plan, action plan and check that their medication is current, please do so as soon as possible.

Please also note, should you wish the school to administer medication at school you are required to complete the following form: https://manlywest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/doe/sws/schools/m/manlywest-p/localcontent/parentrequest_formedication2018.pdf

At times, parents request that medication is carried with their child and is self-administered. This is arranged with Principal approval. If you would like the Principal to consider this request, please complete the above form. All these forms are available on our school website under the ‘Supporting our Students’ tab –‘Student Health and Safety’. https://manlywest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/supporting-our-students/student-health-and-safety.html

Our P & C employ the Bushlink team twice a term to work with our students to maintain and improve our school grounds while developing a culture of understanding and inclusivity. Manly West has proud connections with Bushlink. We welcomed the Bushlink Team back on Tuesday. Thank you to 1T, 3C and 6G for their work mulching the Year 6 area and Eco-Garden.

Cyber Safety As part of our Healthy Lifestyle program at the beginning of the year students participated in Cyber Safety lessons and continue to be reminded about their responsibilities when using technology. The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety) is an independent statutory office supported by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The eSafety Office encourages the most important skills Australians need to create a safer, more positive online environment: Respect, Responsibility, Reasoning and Resilience. A resource to assist parents can be found at: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

We Need More Volunteer Teachers of Ethics The Ethics program offers children an opportunity to engage in extraordinary conversation and being a Volunteer in the Ethics program is incredibly rewarding. No teaching experience is necessary for this position as the role is more about facilitating discussion. Detailed, age-appropriate lesson plans are provided by Primary Ethics. Many parents have indicated that they would like their child to attend Ethics classes, however, we do not have enough volunteers to offer classes to all interested students. Becoming a volunteer Ethics teacher is simple:

contact Lisa Palmer to find out more, show you how to apply and arrange an interview.

obtain a police check and complete various paperwork

attend a 2 day training course through Primary Ethics (www.primaryethics.com.au)

teach a 30 minute class each Thursday morning.

Classes take place at the following times: Years 5 and 6 – 9:20 - 9:50 Years 3 and 4 – 10:00 -10:30 Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 - 10:40 -11:10 If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact our Manly West Primary Ethics Coordinator (and parent), Lisa Palmer – [email protected] 0453 001 062. Library News

It has been fabulous to see so many students borrowing books from our school library! They must know the importance of reading just like Children’s Laureate and author, Ursula Dubosarsky, who said recently, “Libraries are not just sources of information, they are sources of the imagination.”

Friday is not only Valentine’s Day but it is also known as Library Lovers’ Day (although I love the library every day!). This year’s theme is “Uncover something new…” Why not explore a different genre or try out a new author? You never know, it might turn out to be your new all-time favourite!

All Stage 3 students who wish to become a Library Monitor, please pick up an Expression of Interest form to complete and return to the library no later than Friday, February 21st, 2020. Once students know their extracurricular activities schedule (e.g. dance, choir, debating, etc.), Mrs Burke and I will work out a timetable for 2nd half lunchtimes Monday – Thursday in the library. We look forward to working with some helpful, fun volunteers very soon!

Happy reading!

Mrs Ellen Swick

Yr 3 Kitchen Garden/Science Unit Program In the Kitchen Garden this week... Year 3 Year 3 has started their weekly lessons in the SAKG (Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden) program. Year 3 attend in Semester 1 and Year 4 in Semester 2. Last week they had a garden orientation lesson and tasted some cucumber straight out of the garden, and this week they'll get their wheelbarrow and tool licences (weather permitting!). Are you concerned about climate change? Did you know that food waste in landfill breaks down anaerobically to produce methane and carbon dioxide? Both of these are potent greenhouse gases. Learn how to compost and keep green waste out of landfill. Learn how at one of these fantastic courses run through the Ecohouse at Kimbriki Recyling and Resource centre at Ingleside. http://www.ecohouseandgarden.com.au/workshops/composting-and-worm-farms/WAD039 These courses are normally $30 per person but you get a voucher for a worm farm or compost if you haven't already had a free one from Northern Beaches Council (one per household). Volunteers for the Kitchen Garden We need your help in the Kitchen Garden! There are lots of opportunities to help, weekday or weekend. Have you got a student in Year 3? Come and learn alongside your child, no experience required, training is provided and all help is greatly appreciated! Please go to manlywestpandc.org.au/volunteer Kitchen Garden and choose a day that suits you to help then email me to arrange a garden orientation [email protected] School Compost Bins If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to our school compost bins you must be signed up to help turn the compost bins at least twice per term. This is the minimum commitment. We accept fruit & vegetable scraps, but no cooked food, pasta, rice, bread, meat or dairy. Email me any questions. Free Hessian sacks full of coffee husks, they are excellent in compost bins to help balance the waste. Please be aware the sacks are heavy and take care lifting them. Also available are empty hessian sacks for use as blankets in worm farms or compost bins. Taking these saves them from going to land fill. They are by the Boyle St gate entrance to the school. Regards, Angie Penn and Beth Dowdle

Manly West Dance Auditions 2020 The process of Dance auditions will commence next week, Week Four. There are possibly three dance groups available for students to audition for from Years 3-6.

There will hopefully be a Senior Girls Dance Group, which will be open to girls from only Years 5 & 6. There will also hopefully be a Junior Girls Dance Group which will be open to girls in Years 3 & 4 and a Boys Group in which boys from Years 3 – 6 are invited to audition.

The audition process will be over two weeks and the final groups, once decided, will be verbally notified of their success. I hope that all three groups will be able to apply to possibly perform in the Sydney North Dance Festival, which is held in the final two weeks of Term Two.

The dance audition committee and I are looking forward to seeing all the talented and interested dancers at the auditions. All students are responsible for listening to the times and locations for each audition.

Becky Wilson

Dance Co-ordinator.
