From the Principal Information Nights I would like to pass on my appreciation to all parents and students who attended the recent Information Evenings for each of our Year groups. Each session was very well attended and we hope that the information given on the night was both relevant and helpful to both parents and students. Upcoming Events Our annual Swimming Carnival will be held on Monday 23 February at the Boy Charlton pool in Manly. This is a carnival not only for our competitive swimmers, but an opportunity for all students and staff to participate in an enjoyable day outside of the classroom. While we have some wonderfully talented swimmers who represent our school so well each year, our carnival is about participation for all. I encourage all students to enter events and accumulate those highly valued House points. While we may not be in our traditional school setting, this is a ‘normal’ school day and we expect that all students will be in attendance excepting those with illness or other such explanation. On Thursday, we will welcome prospective students and their parents into the school for Open Day. This is not only an opportunity for visitors to see our school in operation, but also an occasion for us to showcase the many and varied talents of the students currently enrolled. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience performances by our magnificent bands, vocal ensemble, dancers, public speakers and SRC representatives. We very much look forward to Open Day each year and are confident that our students will portray our school in a most positive manner.

Tony Rudd Principal

From the Deputy Principals Thank you to all Year 8 parents and students who attended the Information Evening on Monday this week. Feedback from parents was very positive, as reflected in this email from a parent today: “Subsequent to that session …….'s diary is out, music is off, homework is being done and there’s an unprecedented level of organisation and motivation. It seemed that the evening provided the right message at the right time. I appreciate that you all took a lot of your own time to plan that and be there after hours.” Our hope is that all students will benefit from the information, study skills tips and organisational strategies presented on the night. I’m also starting to incorporate the ‘Power Half Hour’ in my daily routine and finding it a very useful strategy to help with organisation and planning. Year 10 students are reminded to return their BOSTES Entry forms to the front office as soon as possible. All students have now received their Assessment Guidelines booklet and should speak to their class teacher or Mrs Whalan if they have any questions regarding assessments. For further information regarding volunteering, ABW, work experience or university open days, please see Mrs Rixon. Year 12 students are to be congratulated for their diligent attitude towards their studies, as reflected in their use of the Library during study periods and their mature approach to work. The Swimming Carnival next Monday will provide a healthy and worthwhile variation to routine! All students are encouraged to get involved as they swim for their House for the last time and cheer on their peers in the annual student/teacher race.

---------------- -----------------

I would like to thank all parents and students who supported the Year 9 and 11 Information evenings this week, as well as all the speakers who provided up to date and pertinent information in order to support students in these year groups. The Year 9 Information evening is a new addition to the school calendar and feedback from the parents has been extremely positive as reflected in this email from a parent: “I just wanted to thank you and your staff for such a wonderful evening

Page 3: Manly Selective Campus · 2019-10-31 · Manly Selective Campus 138 Abbott Road, North Curl Curl NSW 2099 Phone: 9905 3982 / Fax: 9905 7772 Email: nbscmanlys-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au

last night.....one of the most informative, practical and useful hours I have spent.....I can really see the changes Manly is making to both reporting of students performance and communicating with parents. This is so positive as the more we understand what is happening at School the more we can all work together for the benefit of our kids and the School as a whole.” We are always pleased to build stronger relationships between the school and our parents and have parents work with us to achieve the best for our students. Thank you to Ms Hewes for her passionate presentation on preparing our students for the future and to Ms Izossimova for her engaging presentation on how to blitz Year 9. The Preliminary HSC Assessment Policies and Schedules 2016 booklet given to Year 11 students is a valuable guide to the BOSTES and school requirements for Stage 6 students. Please refer to this booklet throughout the year to assist with planning and preparation for assessment tasks and examinations. Thank you to Ms Munro, Mr Martin and Ms Rixon for providing valuable advice about the support programs and strategies available for Year 11 students. Year 7 students are thriving at Manly Selective Campus. They are coping well with following their timetables, finding classrooms and meeting new friends. The Year 7 Disco on Wednesday 2 March and the Year 7 Camp from 7 – 9 March provide further opportunities for students to socialise and get to know each other better.

Year 11 Crossroads Program

Year 11 students had a fantastic time last week at the Sydney Sports Academy, completing elements of the mandatory Year 11 Crossroads Program. Practical activities included raft building, trapeze swinging and bushwalking, just to name a few, and students embraced each activity fully despite the very warm weather! We were lucky enough to secure presentations by local doctors, paramedics and mental health professionals for the theory component of the program, which addressed issues of health, safety and wellbeing at a time when our Year 11 students face significant changes and challenges in their lives. I took great pleasure in participating in the program with Year 11, who took the three days as an opportunity to build their relationships with each other, challenge themselves both physically and mentally, and have an overall great time. Here are some pictures of Year 11 at the Crossroads Program.

A Musical Memory

Fans of our wonderful school musicals might be interested to know that one of our past principal performers, Ashleigh Rubenach, is in the current Sydney production of The Sound of Music. She is part of the ensemble, but also the understudy for the role of Maria. We have been informed that the next time she is playing Maria is Wednesday 24 February. We have also been told that tickets will now be only $50 if you purchase them 2 hours before the show. Ashleigh delighted us with her lead roles in Beauty and the Beast and West Side Story. It was no surprise that she was one of the youngest students to be accepted to WAAPA, The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

On 9th March, Jacqui Pollock will present an introduction to the Parent Coach approach with tips on how to stay resilient and calm in those challenging teen parenting moments!

To book a place for this talk on Wednesday 9th March, please register at http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter Event Code: yepf5. This is a free event open to parents of all years.

Each term, Jacqui will run Parent Coaching workshops during school hours at Manly Selective. Term one workshop will be on Monday 21st March, and repeated in term two on Thursday 5th May. Details of how to sign up will be made available at the Introduction Talk and in future newsletters.

19 February 2016 Dear Parent,

Re: Timetable change to the 684 AM school service From Monday, 29 February 2016 there will be a slight change to the timetable of the 684 morning school bus service from Collaroy Plateau to Balgowlah Boys High. Regular checks of the travel times of buses operating on the Northern Beaches show that gradual changes to traffic conditions have resulted in the late running of a number of school bus services. By adjusting timetables we can ensure that school services match realistic journey times. As a result, the timetable of the 684 school service needed to be adjusted to ensure that the bus still arrives at all designated schools before the school start times. Please find enclosed a copy of the new 684 school service timetable which will be begin from Monday 29 February 2016. Additional information regarding school services is also available on the Sydney Buses website at www.sydneybuses.info. Yours sincerely, Wade Mitford Traffic and Services Manager Northern Region State Transit Authority of NSW
