Principal’s Report State Principals’ Conference and Lucy S and Sofia A
Yesterday morning, I attended the State Principals’ Conference and was absolutely delighted to see two of our students Lucy S and Sofia A performing, with a handful of students from other schools across the state, on stage to open the conference with an amazing dance. Well done Lucy and Sofia! Having two of our students be selected as two of six
dancers from the Primary Schools’ State Dance Ensemble to perform was extremely special! What a great honour to not only represent their elite ensemble group but also Curl Curl North PS. I was a very proud principal amongst the large audience of principals from public schools across the state.
State Athletics Today sixteen students competed at the State Athletics Championships at Homebush. This is a fantastic representation from one school. Congratulations competitors! Gor O was competing in the 12 years boys shot put. The Junior Girls’ Relay Team (Phoebe H, Jessica K, Pietra SM, Laura S and Jacinta C), the Junior Boys’ Relay Team (Oscar SG, Bryce C, Joe L, Joshua L and Baxter S) and the Senior Girls’ Relay Team (Lara P, Charlee E, Hannah S, Gabriella C and Kylah W) were all competing as well. Enormous thanks go to Ms Sayers for training the relay teams to this extremely competitive level and Mrs Winston for her coaching of Gor.
Well done CCNPS Dancers Last weekend a number of students from Curl Curl North were involved in the celebrations for Taronga Zoo’s 100 years. The dancers danced down Macquarie St to the Opera House, all dressed in their ‘animal onesie suits’, bathed in different lighting and accompanied by lots of music. The participating students, teachers and volunteer helpers had a lot of fun!
Thank you to our Senior Dance Group and Mrs Karen Auton. Thanks also to Miss Kim Jones and Miss Laurissa Moore for assisting on the day.
Building program and asbestos issue As I wrote in an email to you during the last weekend of the recent school holidays, part of the planning process for the new building program at our school meant that there was a number of surveyors and geo‐technicians surveying and investigating the school site over the school holidays. This resulted in a small amount of asbestos being unearthed by the geo‐technicians in two parts of the school playground. Following a thorough check of the playground by the qualified specialist team employed by the Department of Education over the last Saturday of the holidays, clearance was given with a detailed report and school thankfully could resume on the Monday morning. In order to avoid a situation like this happening again I have listed the incident as an agenda item for the next building planning meeting which is tomorrow 21 October.
Kindergarten 2017 We have commenced planning for our 2017 kindergarten and another successful Coffee and Play gathering for children commencing school next year was held yesterday. Thank you to Mrs Crawford and members of the school office team who supported the children and parents who attended.
Kindergarten 2017 Parent Information Evening Our Kindergarten Parent Information Evening will be held on Thursday 27 October commencing at 7:00pm in the hall. We look forward to seeing you and discussing the excitement of starting school at Curl Curl North next year. If you have a child who will be commencing school next year and have not provided enrolment details as yet, it would be appreciated if you could do so as soon as possible to assist in our planning of class formation for next year.
2016 Class Placement In the near future we will be commencing the process of organising classes for 2017. If you will be moving from our school at the end of this year it would be appreciated if you could contact the office. Also if you have any special social considerations you would like

the school to be aware of when planning classes (e.g. siblings close in age) you are welcome to submit these in writing to the principal. The principal and staff will not be taking requests for teachers for next year.
Selective High School Applications Students in Year 5 have been provided with a letter detailing information in regards to selective high school placement in 2018. Please be aware that all selective high school applications need to be completed online by Monday 14 November 2016. Late applications will not be accepted. If you require further information you are welcome to contact the school. The Selective High School Placement test for students entering high schools in 2018, will be held on Thursday 9 March 2017.
Farewell Mrs Winston On Monday of this week we farewelled Mrs Michelle Winston and congratulated her on her promotion as a Deputy Principal to Walgett Public School.
Mrs Winston will be missed at Curl Curl North PS. Over the years she has been a willing helper with choirs, worked with the inaugral Student Representative Council (SRC), assisted with the organisation of the Premier’s Spelling Bee, chaired our PBL committee, convened PSSA Netball every year and also held the President’s role of the Manly District PSSA. All this as well as teaching classes.
This year Mr Winston has taught PE to classes Monday to Thursday and job shared on 4S with Mrs Silva, teaching the class on a Friday.
Mrs Winston has an amazing ‘care for kids attitude’ and her skills and welfare approach to students will be very much appreciated at her new school.
We thank Mrs Winston for her continuous contribution to Curly and wish her every happiness in the new challenges ahead.

to the school canteen operators (Tabitha and Emma). I love the new products you are trialling in the canteen. From talking to many students you have some winners on sale at both recess and second half lunch.
Parking I once again, ask for your assistance when parking in Ross St in the afternoons. Please do not park across our neighbours’ driveways, which includes the entrance area to the laneway. It makes it very unsafe for our students when entering and leaving our school.
Hats Thank you for your support of our school’s hat policy. All students are required to wear an appropriate school hat. Students who do not have a hat are directed to play in the designated shade areas at recess and lunch. If you require a new hat they may be purchased from the school uniform shop.
Gymnastics This term all Y3‐6 students in their classes are enjoying a gymnastics program provided by Be Skilled Be Fit.
Robotics Stage Three commenced their Robotics Program this week. This exciting program links to Digital Literacy which is embedded across all Key Learning Areas.
High School Orientation Days On the morning of Tuesday 6 December all state high schools will be holding their Orientation Days. Please mark this in your diary as it is an extremely worthwhile experience.
Welcome As stated above we farewelled much loved Mrs Winston this week. To replace Mrs Winston for this term, we welcome Mrs Debbie Watson, Mr Jay McKay and Mrs Jan Enright to our teaching team. Mrs Watson will teach PE on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Mr McKay will teach PE on Thursday and Mrs Enright will job share with Mrs Silva and teach 4S on a Friday.

PBL Coordinator Taronga Zoo 100 Birthday Parade Last Friday, 23 year 5 and 6 dancers, had their one and
only rehearsal for the Taronga Zoo Birthday Parade the following
day. After a very long day of rehearsal at Homebush we backed up on Saturday to catch the ferry to the city for the parade. We were platypi, dressed in green and blue onesies and carrying light wands.

The feel of the country in the heart of the city
We danced down Macquarie St from Hyde Park to the Opera House behind the big Vivid platypus light being transported on a truck. There were 10 Vivid light animals and 750 children, in onesies or carrying lanterns, involved in the parade.
The street was lined with thousands of people and the atmosphere was electric amongst both the performers and the audience. The parade culminated with a performance on the Opera House Steps by the 750 children.
The girls and I had a fabulous time and many thanks to Miss Kim Jones and Miss Laurissa Moore who came and helped. What fabulous, once in a life time experience we ALL had!

State Debating Team Trials At the end of term 3, Finley Y and Maeve C were invited to trial for the Sydney North Debating Team to compete at the State Debating competition. Maeve was one of 4 students in the entire region to be selected in the 2016 Sydney North Debating Team. This is a huge achievement and definitely deserved! Maeve will be attending workshops for the next 4 Tuesdays to prepare for the state competition. Below is a recount of her trials.
“On the last Friday of term, the day after Debating camp finished, I was lucky enough to be selected to represent Curl Curl North at the State Debating Team Trials, along with Finley; who was unfortunately sick that day and unable to attend. The trials were held at The Collaroy Centre, and there were kids trying out from all over Northern Sydney, though I was proud to wear my Curly uniform.
After everyone had signed in and the parents had left; the adjudicators split everyone up into roughly 8 separate teams, which were paired up as Affirmative and Negative.
We were given half an hour to prepare for a topic of the adjudicator’s choice. The topic my team was faced with was that “Students should be suspended for not reporting bullying”, and we took the negative side. Our 1st speaker was from Manly West and the 2nd from Mona Vale. My position in the debate was 3rd speaker, which was a challenge for me as I usually debate as a 2nd speaker.
After my team and our opposition had finished our debate, I got to watch all the other teams debate, and I was absolutely amazed at the incredible talent all of the students and how well all of the teams worked together; despite having only just met each other.
That afternoon, after school had finished for the term, my Mum received a phone call from the adjudicators in charge of selecting the team, saying that I had been selected to be in the Northern Sydney State Debating Team. I was thrilled!
Overall, the trials were an excellent experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed working side by side with so many amazing debaters from all over Northern Sydney. On behalf of the Curly debating team, I would like to thank Miss Morgan, Mr Neal, and Mrs Crawford for all their hard work and support for Curl Curl debaters. We will miss you when we all go off to high school, though we are sure that the future Curly debating teams will keep on getting better and better. Good luck to all you year 5’s considering trying out for the team in year 6!

Wear red for Daniel The Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to Recognise, React and Report if they feel something is not right.
Wear Red and Educate is the theme for Day for Daniel as we strive to have schools, kindergartens, businesses and communities across Australia take action and conduct child safety activities in their local communities to help keeping kids safe. Curl Curl North Public School has registered to participate.

Spelling Bee As Mrs Smith mentioned in our last Curly Communications, four of our very talented spellers represented Curl Curl North at the Regional
Spelling Bee Finals. The finals were held at Mimosa PS in the last week of term 3. Jarrod B and Rhys H represented stage 2 and Lucas H and Jessie T were on fire for stage 3!
I had the privilege of watching these students and couldn’t have been prouder. Rhys bowed out on the word ‘aide’, Jarrod on ‘unionist’, Jessie on ‘taxonomy’ and Lucas on ‘labyrinth’, finishing a very commendable second place.
Well done to these students. We are all very proud of your achievements!
Mrs Crawford

Kenya Aid – Mufti Day Curl Curl North P.S. is a founding school in the NBLA Global Support of Kenya Aid which is a non‐profit charity.
We are having a mufti day to raise money for Shikunga School which is located in a remote and rural village in Kenya’s western province. Dr Ryan Snaith began Kenya Aid when he went to Shikunga as a medical student.
Dr Snaith spoke with students at an assembly in term three.
Kenya Aid has built the hospital for the community and the school. Kenya Aid’s motto is “students helping students and teachers helping teachers.”
At Shikunga students are enticed to attend school as Kenya Aid started a lunch program. In many instances this is the students’ food for the day.
It costs $1 to feed a child for 1 month.
At Curl Curl North P.S. between the students and the teachers, we hope to raise a lot of money to help these students and teachers in Kenya.
A lot of the time the teachers are working for free as there is no money to pay them.
Curl Curl North P.S. has so many kind, caring, compassionate and thoughtful students.

Library News eBooks and the eBook Raffle This term in the library, children in years 3‐6 have been learning how to access our new eLibrary. You may recall after the Book Donation on Open Day in term3, I purchased an eBook package for our school with the money that was raised. In order to encourage the children to become independent users of the eLibrary we are running an eBook raffle.
To be eligible to win, the students have to log on to the eLibrary, either through their portal, the website or the app. They then write their name, class and the name of the eBook they borrowed on the back of their ticket. They hand their ticket in to the library and the raffle will be drawn on Wednesday 26 October in the 3‐6 Cola assembly.
The raffle is open to all children in years 3‐6 and the ticket is free. I have included a copy of the ticket below in the event your child has lost theirs.
