Best out of waste design exercise. Team of5 came up with theconcept of making afountain from wasteproducts. The lampshade was made usingpaper mache. The paperwas old newspaper. Thebase was an old tirediscarded at a tyre shop. The fountain head wasa coconut from theMess. Stand for thelamp was made withPepsi cans. The motorfor the fountain waspurchased from a carworkshop.

Logo Design Exercise. The logo was for anNGO company involvedin nature preservation.,treatment for the poor, spreading religion. The four sectors in thelogo show anamalgamation of thevarious services andportrays teamwork.

Flooring Pattern using concept of tinting. A floor pattern for a living room. Here I applied symmetry and tinting toachieve a focus on the design and thefloor drew attraction towards the centerof the room. A clear border defined thelimits of the room. The design was basedon patterns of yesteryears.

Design Based on Dots. Thiscomposition was to bring about thetheme of movement using only dots.

Visual Arts Studio- Pen & Ink and Pencil Sketch These aresome of the sketches I have done during my visual arts studioclasses.

Single User Space Design.Design a 1:1 Scale Room withmeasurements 2mX2mX2.5mheight for a single person to reada book leisurely.A room was designed keepingsimplicity and cost in mind. Asthe scale of the entire exercisewas human sized making models

Of our concepts werechallenging. Environmentalfactors such as light, rain etcwas kept in mind whiledesigning. A brief of our designsighting problems, solutionsand innovative use of materialswas submitted. Practicalsolutions based on observationsuch as lower part of wallsgetting prone to dirt wascoloured a deeper colour. Thisexercise also allowed us todisplay our semester works asdécor on the walls.

Design of a Pediatrician's Clinic. The first major architectural design projectwas to design project was to design a Pediatric Clinic in Manipal. Case Studieswere undertaken by visiting the various Hospitals around Manipal ranging fromKasturba Medical Hospital, Dr. TMA Pai Clinic and Neo-natal Hospital Sonia Clinic. The objective was to learn from the inadequacies of those wards, understand therequirements of a pediatric clinic and implement the ideas in our design. Thedesign concentrated on organization and circulation. The external façade was acombination of play of planes and introduction of pergolas as a design feature.

The clinic had simple shading devices that effectively arrested thesunlight flow into the building. The amount of rain that Manipal isfamous for was also a factor in providing comprehensive shadingdevices on the windows to prevent the driving rain effect which is acombination of rain with high force winds.

Design of a Library. This problem was to design a library at a given site for use of students who reside on campus inthe hostels. It was to have different sections as per requirements and enough reading space for students. The designwas to include separately accessible reading halls to be kept open after hours, reference section, journal section, lending section. A coffee counter was included into the design to take into account the late studying hours of thestudents. Louvers were introduced on the glass façade to reduce heating effect of the incoming solar radiation. Thewalkway of the secondary reading hall overlooks the one below giving a view of the landscape outside.

Design of staircase. Here we were asked to design astaircase that would also serve as a iconic part of the design. This staircase was designed out of curved tubular membersand the stair tread from bend steel plate with led lightsinside.

third semester

Design of truss. To study theeffects of load on a truss and studyits parts, we were asked todevelop a physical model of anytype of truss.

Design of swimming pool: In preparation for our major projectwhich was a resort, as a minor project we were asked to design aswimming pool. This was a group of two project. We chose to use theinfinity pool concept and apply it to the swimming pool of a resortnear the beach. Thus it would appear as if the pool meets the oceanharmoniously. The shape of the pool was derived from a conch shellwhich is unanimously associated with the ocean.

fifth semester

Design of Resort: Working with a heavily contoured sitewith almost a 10m difference in levels, we were asked todesign a resort situated on a lateritic hill near Om beachin Gokarna, Karnataka. The resort was designed makinguse of the contours by using different levels in thebuilding. Thus most of the plans are segmental to allowfor easy construction with level differences. The designcontained single dwelling unit, a dormitory dwelling, spaand wellness centre, caretakers residence, receptionbuilding, Manager’s residence etc.

Design of a Mall: For the first time we were given anopportunity to handle a major commercial development project. After conducting extensive case studies in the top Malls ofBangalore, India, we derived our own areas from them anddesigned the mall accordingly. Simplicity was the theme of mymall design, with extensive use of straight lines to create a formand the organizational structure within the mall was mainlystructured around the two foyers interconnected by a widecorridor. The name of the design was ‘Namma Kharidari Kendra’which loosely translated from Kannada and Hindi is My ShoppingCenter.

The minor project forthis semester was thedesign of a draftingtable. I was inspired bythe dentist’s chairwhere all hisinstruments are withinhis reach and must bethe same with anarchitect.
