The United States sent an ambassador to Mexico to offer to buy New Mexico and California, but the Mexican government wanted to part of it. President Polk was determined to have his way so he sent troops to the disputed southern part of Texas. Mexican troops fought back and the United States declared war with Mexico in 1846.
