THE MANGLA DAM The world’s largest dam at the time of its
completion.
Total fill was 140 million cubic yards. (in all the four dams, main dam, Jari dam, intake dam and Sukian dam.)
Previous largest dam was “fort peck dam” on the Missouri river in Usa.
7
PRIMARY FUNCTION
To increase the amount of water that could be used for irrigation
To generate electrical power from the irrigation releases at the artificial head of the reservoir
8
STRUCTURES Main Structures Of The Mangla Dam Include
4 Embankment Dams
2 Spillways
5 Irrigation Tunnels
A Power Station
9
THE MAIN DAM The main dam is 10300 feet long
Height of the main dam above core trench is 454 ft.
Width is 41 ft
10
THE MAIN DAM
83 million cubic yard earth fill was used in main dam and the main dam was the world’s 3rd largest dam.
11
INTAKE EMBANKMENT DAM Height of the intake embankment dam above
core trench is 262 ft.
Length 1900 ft.
Width 147 ft.12
JARI DAM 43 million cubic yards earth fill used in Jari dam
Maximum height above core trench 274 ft.
Length 6800 ft.
Width 40 ft.
13
SUKIAN DAM
Maximum height above core trench 144 ft.
Length 16900 ft.
Width varies 30 ft. To 40 ft.14

16
GENERAL INFORMATION 50 million dollar earth moving machinery “world’s
largest peace time collection of construction equipment.”
Average rate of fill was 3 million cubic yard per month.
With max. Rate 4 million cubic yard per month.
17
GENERAL INFORMATION
Aggregate plant capacity 3000 cubic yards of concrete per hour. world’s biggest plant at that time.
“Mole” to drive tunnels, specially designed. 36 ft. diameter to excavate 1650 ft. long five tunnels. at a rate 105 ft. per day. operated by “Pakistani” operators.
18
EFFECTIVESOver 280 villages and the towns of Mirpur and Dadyal
were submerged
Over 110,000 people were displaced from the area
People had to leave their ancestral homes
