00:00 - 06:00 PKWY TNPKE TUNNEL(Parkway/Turnpike/Tunnel) documents the repeat journey ofthe artist between New Jersey to New York. A slow-motionvideo across six hours, we share the physical, social andpsychological terrain of the commuter. Able to look ahead orbehind in the rear view mirror, the thinned-out spaces of thecontemporary landscape adopt fresh significance as car-dependence eliminates the motivation to walk, comparingthese with the urban intensity of a metropolis.

Titled after a chapter in Yevgeny Zamyatin’s 1937 dystopiannovel, We Frozen Waves, five artists employing visual andtextual codes familiar from the language of commerce andthe information economy were invited to develop projects forYama, a public art programme hosted via a 6m x 9m diodescreen on the roof of the Marmara Pera Hotel in the centre ofIstanbul. Their short works have been informed by thearchitecture of the screen, the Lumacom technology and thelocal context. The format of Frozen Waves is concerned withthe role that technology plays in structuring communication, occupying what the architect Robert Venturi refers to as an ‘iconographic surface’, a façade that functions as a source ofdigital information that is by nature subject to renewal andchange.
Frozen Waves will broadcast new work by Babak Ghazi (UK),

Otherworldly takes viewers on a journey through spaces thatare at once familiar and alien. Nelly-Ève Rajotte's piece,Valo, explores a mysterious interior which is reminiscent of asterile control room. In Comrade Valentina, Nina Levittconsiders not only the bravery but also the charisma of thefirst woman in space. Kelly Richardson's Exiles of theShattered Star is a contemplative piece in which we witnessthe beauty that results from destruction. This programmepremiered on the screen at Federation Square, Melbourne, which is situated in a cluster of futuristic buildings clad in afractal façade of zinc, glass and sandstone, rising abovestreet level to also offer views of the Yarra River and the city.

CATHEDRAL GARDENS 07.00 - 08.00 / 10.00 - 11.00EXCHANGE SQUARE 09.00 - 10.00
A participatory art project - a continuously growing series ofanimations with many authors: The flags of every nation inthe world will transform into each other through flashanimation. Between each two flags, scenes appear that showan aspect of the relations between the two countries. Thisseries of animations is an exploration into the meaning ofimagery on flags, aiming to create interrelated associationsthrough questioning, reassessing, fluidising and re-mixing ofdiverse national iconography.
Flag Metamorphoses lays stress on the relations betweennations and identities as changing ones: Only in thepermanent re-creation of values, symbols and ways of life, inmixing with others and differing from others, cultures andsocieties stay alive. Each artist who creates a flag animationexpresses such a relation in his/her own way.www.flag-metamorphoses.net

display work by artists since 2000. The group has producedthree Transmedia screening programmes, on three differenturban screens in downtown Toronto, where video art ispresented at regular intervals between advertisements. TheTransmedia project provides artists with the creativechallenge of producing moving-image work that is very short(often a minute or less), and that will be sandwiched betweenadvertisements. But as with most limitations, the conditions ofusing urban screens as a platform fosters innovative work.

Souvenirs from the Earth started the first 24/7 TV channel forvideo art on a German cable network in September 2006.The programme has been developed to transform big flatscreens into futuristic paintings, addressing a universal needfor decent, advanced visual entertainment with every screenthat is installed. A project right out of the imagination ofartists like ambient guru Brian Eno or video art pioneers NamJune Paik and Bill Viola into the reality of internationalaudiovisual business.
Redeeming the promise made in 60s sci-fi films where wallswere moving images, Souvenirs from the Earth gives TV-tiredmembers of the post MTV generation the possibility to avoidthe black hole of an inactive screen in an elegant way; byhaving an ever changing art work delivered right into theirhomes.
The programme is a lineup of 10 to 60 minutes long video-paintings; often very slow, colourful films specially producedby different artists, exploring for the first time the physicaldimension of moving images the new big screens can offer. Each film is a visual invention, there is no classicalstorytelling, and there is no sound as there is no sound withtraditional paintings.
The project was presented for the first time at the ICA inLondon and at the 1999 Venice Biennale. London's Sketchgallery, which hosted a 12 screen installation based on theprogramme in 2005. Negotiations are under way to make thechannel available on British cable networks.www.souvenirsfromtheearth.com

2008: Man with a Movie Camera is an experiment indatabase cinema. Based on Dziga Vertov’s 1929masterpiece, this version takes his concept of "decoding lifeas it is" into the twenty first century. Individuals are invited toupload shots and scenes based on scenes from the originalfilm, creating a database which then streams as a film. As acollection of personal visions this montage is in Vertov'sterms "a continuous exchange of visible fact". Uploads to thesite will take place continuously: the nature of the database isinfinite. 20:00 - 21:00 SupernatureCurator: Susanne Jaschko
Supernature is a video and animation programme that bringsnature back into the urban environment, thus fulfilling themodern urbanist’s desire to partly re-naturalise functional citycentres. Through its artificiality today’s subsequentlyimplanted pseudo-nature recalls classic examples of urbandecor such as the ornamental facades of the Art Nouveauand Japanese miniature gardens.
The programme Supernature picks up on this contemporarytrend to reintroduce nature into our stone-heavy urbansurroundings. It also responds to the amazing popularity ofTV series’ featuring wildlife, zoos and pets. Instead ofpresenting an ideal nature, the video works show unsettlingsceneries – boring nature, an impossible nature, fullydesigned nature, nature between beauty and ugliness, anunravelling nature.
Supernature has been specially assembled for UrbanScreens Manchester 07 by its curator Susanne Jaschko.

21:00 - 22:00 Souvenirs from the Earth IICurator: Marcus Kreiss (DE/FR)
