March ushered in both the good and the bad for runners. We gained the extra hour of daylight, but any hope of cooler morning and evening runs comes to an end. As the sunshine and humidity both increase, race season is still in full swing.

We rounded out February with the Lamarque Run for the Lions in North Port. Although small, this race does not lack for spirit and great food. Thanks to all who got up early to volunteer and helped out this wonderful cause.

The Shark’s Tooth 10K kicked off March. Although a bit windy (just ask my husband who pushed a cart for Care2Tri), the weather was mild, the course was scenic, and everyone got medals! That’s always a good thing for those of us who don’t usually win one. The Life in the Son run was back again this year in the racing series with another beautiful scenic 10K course. We missed this one for vacation-I did my obliga-tory 21 laps on the cruise ship. But from the Facebook posts and Dan Gould’s race report, it looks like everyone had a great time. I loved hearing about the age spread, 8-years-old to 91-years-old, Walter White was there. Running truly is an ageless sport!

This month brings us back to back racing series events, with Mote Marine’s Run for the Turtles and Pine View’s Python Run. The Run for the Turtles on April 1 is always a great beach run

and a ton of fun for the kids with the Mote mo-bile aquarium. The Python Run, which I have been involved with since its inception, is shap-ing up to be better than ever this year. I hope to see everyone out for both of events.

Be sure to check out the event calendar on the website for registration and Information. A special thanks to Past President Kimmy for keeping the calendar updated with all the local running events.

If you are interested in volunteering, please see the monthly emails for information on how to contact the race consultants for individual events. We are always looking for good people,

and you are the best!

sin born and raised. Jack has logged to date, 597 races and many years held pace with another beloved MTC member, Dan Gould, for the “most races run” bragging rights. Like Dan Gould, Jack has recorded every single race, distance and his finish-ing time. Remarkable! Now, let’s talk specifically about Jack and his contribu-tions to our club.

After growing weary from long, cold and wet Wisconsin winters, Jack and Karen set their sights on spending part of the year in Florida. After visiting Ft. Lauderdale, Naples and Ft. Myers, they found Sarasota. Jack and Karen pur-chased a seasonal home on Siesta Key and since 1983 have spent the winter months here and the summer’s in Wis-consin. We all have that person who led us to the Manasota Track Club and for the Knuese’s, it was Don Friedman. Don was a runner, artist and member of MTC. He didn’t compete in local races but had a large affinity for the club and strongly encouraged Jack and Karen join. So they did – jumping in with both feet! Not knowing very many people in Sarasota, the club created an immediate network of new friends. Though Jack refrained for the most part from becoming a full-fledged member of the board due to his seasonal residence, in 1984 he started his significant service with MTC. At that time, monthly meetings were held at Twin Lakes Park and called “general member meetings.” The newsletter was assembled at various member’s homes and the MTC banquet was a potluck. For many years, Jack served as the equipment manager and did routine service and maintenance on the van himself. He was the Emcee for the annual banquet until 2008, was rec-ognized in 2005 as the MTC Male Runner of the Year and has served as race director and/or race consult-ant for an astonishing 43 races! Most notably, Jack was the race director for the Turtle Run for the better part of 20 years. From 1996 – 2008 Jack recalls being a committee of one, who person-ally made hundreds of phone calls to recruit board members. It is hard to imagine now but there was a large span of time when

finding members who wanted to serve on the board an impossible task.

Jack’s network of running friends expanded quickly, kind of how it does in MTC life, and before he knew it, he and Ka-ren were running with a consistent group of folks on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. The Tuesday night runs started at Bill Menard’s house and concluded with a potluck dinner. In those days there were not a lot of local races so the Knuese’s, with the likes of Tom Depenbrock, Fred Fiala, Janet Augustine, Tom Bedford and many others traveled out of town for running fun. The Gaspa-rilla 15K was always worthy of an over-night road trip and that was one of Jack’s favorites (probably because he won a lot!).

Jack and Karen hosted an annual Christmas Party for the “Tuesday/Thursday night running group” at their home on Siesta Key for more years than I can count. At least 3 or 4 times each season they would host a Tuesday night run from their house, followed by great food and price-less fellowship. If you were lucky enough to be handpicked by Jack as a friend, you were provided with countless opportuni-ties to meet new running friends and get involved with MTC.

I asked Jack what one piece of advice he would give to incoming members. He said “get involved right away, don’t wait because the time will get away from you. It’s easy to be a by-stander and let every-one else shoulder the load but you will get so much more from volunteering than you will ever give.” Jack also shared that he is a big fan of immediate past president, Kimmy Collister and is amazed to see how she has led MTC in to a new and exciting chapter in the club’s history.

Jack Knuese has certainly led by example, given more of his time and talents than many and continues to promote MTC on every occasion he can. Find your passion within the club and Pay it Forward!

Eighty-five runners, walkers, nature lovers, and partiers showed up for the 7:30 am start. The 50K-ers would negotiate the 7.75-mile trail course four times while the 25k fun-runners would do two laps. The trails were in nice shape and the weather was beautiful. After a few pre-race announcements the clock was started and most of the runners were on their way. Now we waited to see who would come by the scorers table first after Lap #1.

Usually the first couple of runners to complete the first lap are 25K runners. That wasn’t the case this year. The first two 50K runners (Hector Guzman and John Wood) were smoking and completed the first lap in 57:28, side-by side. Four minutes later Johnnie Luvavali and Taylor Hennigne came by together on their way to Lap #2.

Sandwiched in between the two 50k groups were three 25k runners. Justin Miesner, Paul Carrington, and Michael Kane came through in just over an hour. Not far behind was the leading female 50K contender, Ana Cristina Constantin (from Spain) and local 25K runner, Rae Ann Darling Reed.

Hector dropped the hammer and did a 53:41 split for Lap #2 and was alone in first place as the other three leaders shuffled places. John Wood was still in second place, but almost 5 minutes behind Hector. Johnnie and Taylor were a couple of minutes behind John in the 50K. Ana took a wrong turn and lost some time, but was still leading the women.

Meanwhile in the 25k Michael Kane caught fire and finished first with a 1:58:56. Paul Carrington was close behind and finished in 1:59:26. Three seconds later Osama Al Qatan crossed the line to take third. Rae Ann (2:07:32) finished comfort-ably ahead of Janet Feldman (2:18:30) to take the overall female award.

Back on the course Hector was still pushing in Lap #3 and did a 57:09 split and had a 4 minute lead over the second place runner who was now Johnnie Luvavali. Taylor was now in third place and John Wood was fourth. (John had stopped to help Ana with directions, which was not easy since she spoke very little English.) The fourth lap got hot and all four front-runners slowed, but Hector had built a substantial lead and finished first while Johnnie took second and won the Master award. Ana continued to have course-direction problems, but finished first among the women.

There are always some runners in this race who have accomplished great feats. In January Sally Libonati had completed a 203 mile race in 70 hours and 56

minutes. So she was hardly daunted by the 50K. Sally had a very nice race and finished as the first female Master with a 5:29:10. Judy Holden (from the Wash DC area) finished 1 minute and 47 seconds behind Sally. If Sally had eyes in the back of her head she might have seen Judy gaining on her. While most of the runners slowed down on each successive lap in the 50K, Judy had run each lap faster than the one before and had gained 7 minutes on Sally in the final lap.

John Izzo (67) took the Male Geezer award this year with a very nice 6:15:52. There were no Female Geezer contenders this year. To qualify as a Geezer, the run-ner must be 65 or over.

There were several first time 50K-ers who all completed the course. Congrats to Whitney Bartlett, Darcie Freddolino, and Terrie Hoops. Also congrats to Jennifer Glassburn. This was the 21st time Jen has finished our 50K.

After reading this report about all of the fast runners one might think this was serious business. Those of you who were out there know the rest of the story. The race is a laid-back event that has two purposes. One is to expose runners to trail running and the ultra mindset i.e. “embrace the adventure”. There was definitely a lot of “embracing”, smiling and enjoying going on out there.

Our second purpose was to raise money for a wonderful charity – the Villa La Paz Foundation. The Foundation collects donations to fund a home for sick and destitute kids in Peru. Literally all of the money collected goes to caring for those kids. A very special thanks to some of our runners who very generously donated extra money, when they registered. This year we will be able to send $3,000 to Villa La Paz. If you are interested and want to get a feel for what the Foundation does you can view the website : VillaLaPazFoundation.org

Finally, you all know that races don’t happen without volunteers. Our wonder-ful volunteers and the race results are all listed on the Facebook group page: MTC Ultra as well as the MTC website and the MTC Facebook page.

coach tiPs

We all have races that stick in our head for years. We remember every detail of the race: before, during and after. Some positive memories, some not.

Etched indelibly in my mind is such a race. Looking back, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

I had turned 40 and I was in the process of converting from a long distance runner (10k, ½ and full marathons) to a miler. New to track training, speed workouts of 200’s, 400’s, 800’s…. my coach and I discovered I had some natural short distance speed. So I competed in the indoor and outdoor National Master track and field events. At 39 I placed 2nd in the outdoor 1500m in 4:46. At 40 I won the indoor mile with the time of 5:08; and placed 2nd in the indoor 800m in 2:18. At 41 I won the National Masters indoor mile with a 5:10.

Based on my training speeds, my coach thought I should be able to break 5 minutes. His long time connections with the USATF and coaching fellows, got me a special invite to the Penn Relays. He expected that the atmosphere of the event would ex-cite my mind, quicken my feet, reduce lactic acid in my legs, and adrenalin would rush through my body. He was confident I would break 5 min. His hope prevailed.

I had never paid much attention to the Penn Relays. I googled Penn Relays. It is the oldest track meet in the US (1895); three day track meet; 15,000 athletes – high school, college, elite/profes-

sional athletes. Venue is at the UPenn football stadium, capacity – 50,000. Coach entered me in a race called “Olympic Development Mile”.

My 4 PoiNt PLAN1 - Housing – Rather than risk a noisy hotel, I chose a quiet B

& B within walking distance of the stadium. I thought, avoid the hubbub of the event and have a tranquil night’s sleep.

2 - Arrive one full day early, get the lay of the land, check out venue and warm up area.

3 -Mental state – be calm, relaxed, focused. Stay in routine. Hydrate

4 - April 07’ a month after the Master Indoor Nationals, I was in the best shape of my aging body’s life…. Running sub 75 second 400’s in training. All I had to do at Penn Relays – stitch 4 of those splits together consecutively. My 5 minute mile dream would be reality.

rEALity – AS it HAPPENEdHousing – my quaint little B & B was situated next to a charm-

ing old house that I discovered was a frat house. Friday nights at a frat house… are you kidding me..???? No tranquil night sleep. Remember, I wanted to be walking distance from the stadium? Normally 1 ½ miles is walking distance but not on race day with unseasonably warm temperatures. So I ordered a taxi the night before. You guessed it…. The taxi didn’t show. So I jogged/

coach tiPswalked the 1 ½ miles to the stadium with my spikes/ bag/ water, in the warm temps.

WArM UPI arrived at the track about 2 hours before my race. I entered

the stadium. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There must’ve been 50,000 spectators. It was crazy. I looked over at the holding pen – this is where racers are held just before they line up to race….I felt sick to my stomach. Get me out of here, I thought. Just then, my Nike friend found me and brought me to the warm up area. This area was quiet and calm, a huge field behind the stadium. Here you see all the athletes warming up, stretching, talking with their coaches. I recognized well known coaches and athletes. I got down to business and did my normal warm up routine. To the tee, not missing a step. Warm up 2 miles, dynamic flex drills, plyomet-rics, stretch, hydrate.

I was staying in my routine, I was focused, hydrated, but I was anything but calm and relaxed. Intimidated.

About 30 minutes before each race, each heat is moved into the stadium and placed in the holding pens, an area at the end of the track where the 100m ends. It was getting close to the time my heat would enter the stadium. I didn’t have a good night sleep, I had to run/ walk to the stadium, weather much warmer than I like, I was a bit overwhelmed by the crowd and athletes and if all of that wasn’t enough, I felt sick to my stomach. At that moment, I got my period. OMG. Didn’t see that coming. I had to frantically search female competitors and female coaches to help with my situation. Just in time to be escorted to the holding pen AND they took away our water bottles.

So we’re on the starting line. My heat: 19 20 year olds, hard

bodies with skin tight tops and bikini bottoms and one 41 year old with wrinkled knees and a small muffin top. As we were on the waterfall start position, after months of training and what I believed was a solid plan, surrounded by 50,000 people, two thoughts ran through my mind: don’t be last and I pray there’s not a tampon string hanging out of my shorts. (I’m not kidding.)

tHE rACEI killed it the first 2 laps. I was definitely NOT in the lead, far

from it. But I wasn’t LAST. I felt the lactic acid take over my legs. No one cared about me at all. But all I could think about was every-one was looking at this old lady racing against these studs. The 3rd lap is a distant memory and the last lap, I gave all that I could. I crossed the finish line in 5:03, ahead of 3 other participants. 3 seconds slower than my goal but a 5 second PR.

rEFLECtioNSYou’ve heard of Murphy’s Law? “If it can go wrong, it will…the

more important it is to you, the more likely it will go wrong.”Immediately after the race, my emotions were mixed, missed

my goal by 3 seconds, beat my PR by 5 seconds.10 years removed, I totally laugh. A dedicated effort interrupt-

ed by the comical. These days, what matters to me – train and race with friends. Laugh. Run so I can eat and drink without los-ing control of my muffin top. I’m older than I used to be, slower than I was. I love to run. Run hard. Make fun memories.
