There is no denying it, the library space is changing. Greater pressure is being felt by your peers to deliver better information, be more proactive and literally cut corners and operate in smaller or more virtual spaces. This doesn’t mean it is all doom and gloom for information professionals; you are faced with the unique opportunity for growing and transforming your traditional library and embedding it as a service within the firm, not a space. This is the challenge that you and your peers face; are we moving in the right direction and are the changes we make now future proof?

Last year our theme focused on how to run the library more like a business and this pressure has certainly not abated. Information professionals are now playing a proactive role in delivering key information, insights and understandings of their clients’ needs. Supporting the firm’s strategic areas of growth by breaking with traditional thinking around librarians and libraries and collaborating across departments, practice areas and offices.

This programme, researched with legal information thought-leaders, offers one day of intensive guidance and tools to aid you in delivering streamlined services that will bring you in line with your competitors and closer to meeting client expectations.

Run your library service like a businessLast year, Sarah Brittan shared Baker & McKenzie’s forward-thinking move to embed and align the library service strategy with the business. Now one year on, we hear how this transformation has been received, including the challenges and the highlights. Baker & McKenzie are not alone in transforming the library service within their firms, a trend we are seeing increase as pressure mounts on library professionals to play a more active role in business strategy. Legal heavyweights Bird & Bird also join this strategy session as they reveal how they have built the library services’ reputation as a trusted advisor through offering pro-active business intelligence to the firm and what this has meant for them.

There seem to be disparate feelings regarding the future economic climate, whilst some law firm library services may be feeling a relaxing of grip on the purse strings, many still face strict reviews of budget spend with cuts still expected. Reviewing your resources is not simply for those firms still struggling; it is good practice and can prepare you for many challenges, including sudden law firm mergers; defending your service and giving you valuable insights into your service. Julie Christmas of Allen & Overy talks us through her experience of having to review, map processes and conduct an internal library audit with a view to relocating library services.

People management – real life experiencesAs information professionals we are not trained to manage, communicate with or motivate people; and yet this is something that is supposed to be an inherent part of working life. Most managers agree that effective

management and communication is gained from ‘on the job’ experiences learnt through trial and error; which is why this year we have included two real life case-studies, not only for managers, but for anyone who has to deal with people. Victoria North shares her experiences of managing teams, understanding dynamics and communicating effectively across teams and offices. Dunstan Speight of Berwin Leighton Paisner will tackle the challenge of retaining key members of the library team by assessing the technical skills of research librarians through the use of benchmarking tools and exploring how to progress the careers of librarians who are skilled at research, but do not want to move into management.

Tangible take-awaysWhilst we know networking with your peers is good, and learning what your competitors’ team are doing is great, the most important thing for you and your management is that you come away from this conference with skills that will help you make efficiencies, cost savings and improvements in your day-to-day role which in turn can be passed along to the business. This is why we have included essential tools and skills sessions such as project management, training and copyright. Many information professionals find themselves responsible for implementing new projects and initiatives that will bring their services in line with competitors. Project management within a legal framework requires a particular set of skills and understanding, which is why we have brought in legal project management expert, Antony Smith to share his insights and provide a sensible approach to managing numerous projects.

Common copyright mistakes and infringements are not only potentially embarrassing for law firms, but could land up costing the firm a substantial amount in legal fees. We know that you all have an understanding of copyright and we want to share this with each other, not just the do’s and don’ts, but also the peculiarities of each resource, platform and supplier, learnt from your particular experience in dealing with them. This session is sure to get you talking, sharing and learning as we create a personal copyright handbook for Librarians by Librarians, and have some fun doing it.
