Objective

Telecom Expenses Management (TEM) provides greater visibility of telecom expenses. Device Activity is one of

best TEM tools, which helps administrators to control and reduce telecom expenses. It allows IT administrators to

monitor and report on the activities of devices, such as Cellular data, Wi-Fi data, SMS, Roaming usage and

Outgoing-incoming telephone calls with Remote party numbers. Administrators can define different views to

collect activity data as per company requirement. Companies can design processes to reduce telecom expenses by

implementing various controls.

This document describes process, how administrators can control usages when devices are in roaming

Scenario

For each subscriber, company is having corporate mobile plan of 400 MB Data, 200 Messages and 350 Minutes of

calls in Roaming Network, administrators can define threshold view of 80%, it means, when user is reaching 80%

of calls and SMS, and administrator finds that these usage was personal then he can notify users to limit usage.

After notifying, if users are still consuming calls and SMS, administrator can take necessary actions. Depending on

device type, he can block roaming calls, SMS and data. In below example, Android SAFE Devices and iOS Devices

are considered.

Prerequisites

CAMDM Server with Device Activity Enabled. (Picture 1)

Navigate to Server page Configuration on left toolbar Components Device ActivityClick “Enable” Save

Roaming Settings (Picture 2)

This setting will notify user when they enters international roaming. You can set Latency control and configure

Display text as per your requirement. Latency Control is time length that sustains roaming status change before

notifying users.

Set threshold field to 80% in Roaming network for Data, SMS and Minutes of Calls.

Preparations

1. Create Static Group Called “Roaming Restricted Users” Do NOT link any devices to this group. (Picture 4)

2. Create Configuration policy for Android Devices for disabling call usage and data usage. (Picture 5)

Navigate to Policy Page New Configuration Policy Android Enter Name “Restrictions for Roaming

Users”

Samsung Android

3. To block roaming calls for android SAFE devices, navigate to Samsung Application Policy Samsung

Application Enable/Disable Policy Add below package path names to disable “Phone” App on device.

You can block same applications for LG SAFE devices in LG Application Policy LG Application

Enable/Disable Policy.

4. To block Roaming Data for Samsung, navigate to Samsung Roaming Policy. (Picture 7)

Click “No” for “Allow roaming Data”

5. You can also block Outgoing SMS for LG Devices. (Picture 9)

6. Save all this restrictions in one configuration policy On Summary Page Set Priority to “20”, so that this

policy will run first on devices. (Picture 10)

7. Un-publish this configuration policy and link it to “Restricted Roaming Users” Group (Picture 11 and 12)

8. Create configuration policy for iOS devices to block Calls and Data.

Navigate to Policy Page New Configuration Policy iOS Enter Name “Restrictions for Roaming

Devices” Set Priority “20” (Picture 13)

9. Expand MDM Payload Setting Add New Setting Disable both Voice Roaming and Data Roaming.

Navigate to Policy Page New Configuration Policy Android Enter Name “Re-enable Roaming Users”

13. To allow roaming calls for android SAFE devices, navigate to Samsung Application Policy Samsung

Application Enable/Disable Policy Add below package path names to Enable “Phone” App on device.

14. To Enable Roaming Data for Samsung, navigate to Samsung Roaming Policy.

Click “Yes” for “Allow roaming Data”

15. Save this configuration policy and Link it to “Re-enable Roaming User” Group.

16. Create configuration policy for iOS to enable Roaming Voice and Data:

17. Link this policy to “Re-enable Roaming User” Group. You will see there are two policies linked with

“Re-enable Roaming User” Group.

Preparing Devices

17. When devices are enrolled in CA MDM, users will be prompted for Device Activity Data Collection.

18. When a user enters international roaming, TEM Notification will pop up on devices to notify users to

limit calls and data usage.

19. Administrator can monitor roaming devices in CA MDM Console.

On the left toolbar, click Select View Double Click on “Roaming Subscriber View”

This view displays list of roaming subscribers including roaming network, roaming country, roaming start date ,

end date etc. (Picture 17)

20. To monitor users who have exceeded defined thresholds for at least one kind of activity within an

accounting period

Navigate to Device Activity List Select View Double Click on “Exceed threshold summary- Current

Accounting Period” (Picture 18, 19)

21. In this report, select user who have exceeded 80% of roaming calls and Click on “Activity Details” to

verify whether these company calls or personal calls. (Picture 20, 21)

22. If administrator observes that these calls are personal; he sends Push Notification or Email to offended

user to warn that roaming will be disabled if phone calls are not reduced.

23. Notifications on devices:

24. Administrator observes that, still user is consuming phone calls then he can take necessary actions.

In this example, we have configured below restrictions depending on device type.

For Samsung Android:

- Disable Roaming Calls

- Disable Roaming Data

Android iOS

For LG Android

- Disable Roaming Calls

- Disable Roaming Data

- Disable SMS

For iOS

- Disable Roaming Calls

- Disable Roaming Data

25. Link offended user’s device to “Restricted Roaming Users” Group. (Picture 23)

26. When device is linked, you will see previously associated policies to that device which will not still run

on device. (Highlighted in Picture 24)

29. After Device sessions, configuration policies will be delivered on devices, and Roaming will be disabled

depending on device type. For Samsung Android, user will not be able to make call. He will get error,

when he tries to make a call. (Picture 27)

Enabling Roaming

30. In beginning of next accounting period, Roaming Thresholds will reduce again to normal numbers.

Hence, administrators have to re-enable roaming to allow users to make calls, use Data etc.

Unlink offended users devices from “Roaming Restricted Users” Group. (Picture 28)

Navigate to Groups Page Select “Roaming Restricted Users” Link View in Devices Window, Select

Device Click “Unlink”

31. Link that device to “Re-enable Roaming User” Group and Apply policies to allow roaming. (Picture 29)

32. When these policies are delivered on devices, user will be able to make calls and use packet data in

roaming.

You can also send intimation message to users, notifying roaming is allowed. (Picture 31)

In this way, MDM plays vital role in TEM world, to scale down your Telecom Expenses.
