ForewordTelkomtelstra President Director Message
Dear Readers,
We are pleased to welcome August by sharing
with you our third telkomtelstra Newsletter 2018,
featuring research from Frost & Sullivan, a global
leading information technology research company.
We issue these newsletters on a regular basis for you,
each with a theme we think is relevant for people in
the technology space, and business leaders in and
beyond Indonesia.
In this third edition, we highlight about technology
in connectivity and how it is becoming more of
a fundamental factor for businesses in today’s
information age. We can say that enterprises are
now almost entirely connected with great quality
levels of bandwidth and efficiency. Brief durations of
downtime in your operation landscape might have
an instantaneous impact on business and expose the
company to a range of significant issues that relate to
compliance, regulatory and security risks, especially
for organisations that have various operation
locations to manage. In terms of company image,
the damage caused by connectivity failure can even
impact brand reputation as well as customer loyalty.
Technology for network connectivity itself has grown
and expanded rapidly over the years. One of the
biggest challenges facing enterprise IT teams in terms
of network connectivity is to meet the complexities of
modern-day computing. New technologies, services,
and applications have developed over time, that
are significantly impacting the business in various
ways. In order to boost productivity and business
outcomes, the networks nowadays need technology
in centralized IT infrastructure that drives key
technical advantages such as increased bandwidth
and guaranteed uptime, while being able to expand
or change the network connections over multiple
locations while at the same time able to increase the
profit.
Nevertheless, managing connectivity for business
networks is unique in many ways. While no one can
deny that businesses these days live and die by their
networks, it is also evident that keeping up-to date
and innovating can mean significant investments in
resources and capital, with the need to keep track of
a long list of vendors from Network Management &
Maintenance to the Hosting Solutions. Obviously, the
bigger and more remote your operations, the costlier
it is to set up your network. And guaranteeing,
through all this, that the connection will be up and
operating 24/7 is the biggest maintenance challenge
of all. Your IT managers bear one of the most difficult
tasks, in which they must be able to detect failures
before they occur and reduce downtime as much as
possible, regardless of the reasons.
As a company with high expertise and experience
in managed network services that lead to reduced
complexity, cost and time, telkomtelstra is
collaborating with Frost & Sullivan to present you this
newsletter, that covers a wide range of information
about networks for enterprises and how you can
stay up-to-date. I sincerely hope that this newsletter
will help you as a decision maker to have suitable
information on managing your enterprise connectivity
that will in-turn have a profound positive impact on
your business. We’d love to have a discussion with
you about how we can work together to support your
business objectives accordingly.
Warm regards,
Erik Meijer

4Managing Networks in the Era of Digital Transformation
Asia-Pacific enterprises implementing digitalization initiatives
Home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, Asia-Pacific is positioning digitalization as a key agenda for governments and organizations alike to unlock the economic potential of the region.
Commonly known as Industry
4.0, the digital economy is giving
rise to new business models and
radically altering the competitive
landscape for organizations across
various industry verticals.
While digital transformation
means different things to business
leaders depending on the scale of
enterprise and industry vertical
digital maturity, the overarching
business priority for organizations
is to identify the means to achieve
nonlinear growth, develop
differentiated business models,
and generate greater value for
customers and employees. It is
no surprise then that surveys
with organizations in Asia-Pacific
highlight a notable increase in
budgets and investments across
a broad spectrum of digital
technologies. A Frost & Sullivan
End User Survey indicated that
67% of organizations in Asia-
Pacific anticipate an increase
in their IT and communications
budgets in 2018 to support digital
initiatives.
5Managing Networks in the Era of Digital
Transformation
In embarking on the digital
journey, enterprise leaders are
seeking ways to bolster their data
capabilities by leveraging multiple
technologies. However, successful
digital journeys extend beyond
selection of the right technology.
While business leaders are
closely assessing the alignment
of digital strategy to business
goals as well as ROI, IT leaders
are grappling with the enormous
number of technology options
and deployment models to
ensure seamless IT integration of
legacy IT systems and emerging
technologies.

6Managing Networks in the Era of Digital Transformation
Surveys studying organizations in
Asia-Pacific highlight significant
disparities in technology
investment priorities. On the
one hand, several organizations
are focusing on integrating core
applications with collaboration
tools; then there are other
relatively digitally mature
enterprises investing in emerging
technologies like Internet of
Things (IoT) and virtual reality
(VR).
However, the most common
focus area for organizations
in the region, irrespective of
business size or industry, is data
analytics. Collecting, storing,
and analyzing data to harness
its potential in gaining insights
to support functional areas and
decision-making is emerging as the
penultimate objective of digital
investments.
Analytics provides an enormous
opportunity to network teams
to effectively analyze network
behavior and implement
predictive problem resolution
through analytical dashboards
developed on an integrated view
of network data. Monitoring and
management of networks are
expected to continue undergoing
significant transformation with the
deployment of highly advanced
network analytics infrastructure.
As organizations in Asia-Pacific
fast-track digitalization initiatives
to rapidly realize its benefits, they
are also concentrating on building
IT infrastructure that can deliver
new digital competencies. It is
necessary for the networks to
dynamically align with evolving IT
architectures. While the network
architecture needs to be agile and
digitally-ready, it is essential for
network management models to
enable the shift of IT staff from
basic troubleshooting tasks to
leading more strategic initiatives.

7Managing Networks in the Era of Digital
Transformation
SecureDigital initiatives should be
built on emerging technologies
such as IoT and cloud-based
deployment models that require
network-wide security and threat
detection tools. To ensure a highly
secure network, it is critical to
have real-time visibility into
network activities backed by
proactive monitoring and threat
management mechanisms.
To date, networks being deployed by enterprises are primarily designed
to enable connectivity for core application IT architectures. However,
the rapidly changing technology landscape demands the use of new
technologies and more effective management to build digitally-ready
organizations. New enterprise networks need to be:
FlexibleContinued investments in mobile
and IoT technologies are crucial to
exponentially increase enterprise
touchpoints and extend traditional
enterprise network perimeters.
Scaling up or down of networks
to connect distributed networks
require flexible architectures or
software-defined solutions.
AutomatedNetwork teams need to manage
an increasingly heterogeneous
spectrum of applications and
devices. To minimize effort and
time in ensuring adherence to
the desired quality of services,
simplified management of
networks through greater
automation such as intrusion
alerting capabilities and self-
optimizing mechanisms are
essential.
Evolving beyond traditional networks is becoming vital

9Managing Networks in the Era of Digital
Transformation
Q3 2017 witnessed a 12.5% YoY increase in spending on network security by Asia Pacific enterprises
However, ensuring network stability/ reliability
continues to be a key challenge for organizations
in Asia-Pacific initiating digital transformation
initiatives.
The Frost & Sullivan End User Survey highlighted
that over one-fourth of enterprises surveyed in
Asia-Pacific consider network stability as one of
the top challenges for IT departments.
In conducting more in-depth analysis on network
outsourcing drivers, security and performance
were identified as the top two challenges in terms
of in – house management, apart from network
management pricing.
Network Security
In an industrial Internet of Things
(IoT) environment, operational
technology (OT) networks are
increasingly interconnected
to a vast array of networks,
including IT and business systems,
communication platforms, and
cloud services.
Greater network connectivity
provides hackers multiple
gateways to exploit vulnerabilities
in OT networks to launch cyber-
attacks.
The recent massive outbreak of
ransomware attacks has sparked
the need for more enterprises to
improve their cyber resilience and
encourage investment in securing
network infrastructure.
Banking, financial services and
insurance (BFSI), government
agencies and service provider
verticals are the top three
spending verticals in the network
security market, mainly driven
by regulatory and security
compliance needs to protect
sensitive data.
10Managing Networks in the Era of Digital Transformation
Given that businesses need to be more agile and customer-centric, it is clear that network performance is a key priority for IT and network teams.
Performance
Traditional network models may
not be able to overcome the
challenges due to human error and
lack of standardization.
Also, with hyperconnectivity
continually redefining the business
environment, digital technologies
being deployed are highly
network-centric and extensively
rely on a stable infrastructure to
operate.
This is resulting in increased
interest in software-centric
architectures that leverage
the benefits of programmable
infrastructure.
SD-WAN technologies use
intelligent, application-aware
software to route traffic over
the optimal network technology,
based on business policies.
The ability to ensure optimal
application performance
irrespective of the underlying
transport and the need to control
branch-site routing policies
remotely are attracting significant
interest from enterprises,
mainly from verticals with highly
distributed branch locations (e.g.,
retail, healthcare, BFSI, education).
11Managing Networks in the Era of Digital
Transformation
The business environment requires IT resources to be available
round-the-clock, enabling an ecosystem of operations, partners,
and customers to function seamlessly. Fast-evolving technologies,
complexities in integrating heterogeneous networks, and the
need to ensure a “clean pipe” amid an escalation in DDoS attacks
continue to be major factors demanding high expertise.
Expertise in deploying and maintaining enabling networks is critical

Besides access to state-of-the-art
technologies, managed services
providers in Asia-Pacific are focused
on bundling connectivity and security
services to enhance customer value.
Establishing an effective network
strategy to guide digital transformation
effectively leverages technology know-
how, implementation of best practices,
and adequate skill sets.
The value proposition of managed
network services, such as continuous
monitoring, proactive maintenance,
and single-point ownership to deliver
a reliable and robust network is a
compelling option for enterprises.
Given the strategic importance of
managed network services and
challenges with traditional systems,
over 60% of enterprises surveyed
in the region revealed that they are
increasingly outsourcing network
services.
Organizations in APAC are increasingly
leveraging managed services to support
networks, infrastructure or applications-
related services.
As the breadth of outsourcing increases,
it is crucial to have a reliable end-to-end
managed services provider that meets
end-to-end enterprise ICT requirements,
rather than a piecemeal or point solution
approach to outsourcing.
An effective outsourcing strategy is a
critical differentiator that would enable
organizations to free up internal IT
resources, allowing them to drive more
significant innovation and focus on
strategic project management.
