MANAGEMENT: PRINCIPLESThe importance of management in business can sometimes be underestimated, but the latest research shows that it is certainly not the case. The input of the labour, capital and raw materials can never become production without the catalyst of management. A business cannot survive without management because management is its means of support. A primary diff erence between managers and leaders is that managers depend primarily on their skill, while leaders primarily depend on their characteristics. Eff ective managers possess three essential skills – technical, human, and conceptual skills. Managers must understand the technical aspects surrounding the duties of their employees.

The phrase ‘soft skills’ is often used to describe the skills which characterise relationships and other people, or how you approach interactions.

For many people, the so-called soft skills are often some of the most diffi cult skills to develop. Job-re-lated expertise (hard skills) are essential in any profession. However, over the last 10 years, under-standing has grown that perhaps soft skills may ul-timately be more important in determining levels of success.

Hard skills are a basic minimum necessity in order to operate in a particular workplace. Whether or not you are successful in your career may depend on how developed your soft skills are.

Please take note that these hours are only estimated times.

Our online courses and workshop training for continuing professional development, written by professionals for professionals and involving thoughtful online interaction with your peers, go a long way towards resolving issues.

The most significant advantage of self-study is the independence it offers. Studying alone allows delegates to concentrate and focus on their studies at their highest level.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARNM A N A G E M E N T : P R I N C I P L E S

01MANAGEMENT VS LEADERSHIP

Managers depend primarily on their skill, while leaders depend on their characteristics. Eff ective managers possess three essential skills – technical, human, and conceptual skills. Managers must understand the technical aspects of the duties of their employees.

02MANAGEMENT STYLES AND FUNCTIONS

A management style is an overall approach to leading and motivating employees. While a number of management styles exist, you can generally categorise them. Within each style, managers use their own techniques and methods to put their ideas into practice.

03CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD MANAGER

Good management is critical to the success of a small business. Poor management aff ects staff morale, customer service and the quality of your product. Successful managers have common characteristics that you can seek out and develop in your own management staff .

04TASKS OF MANAGEMENT

The title of manager in the workplace can cover a realm of duties, most of them supervisory in nature. In larger corporations, you may fi nd tiers of management levels, each with specifi c duties. However, in a small business, the manager is often a jack-of-all-trades.

05LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE

An infl uential leader’s strength lies in the results created by its practical application. All leaders can get people to achieve, but infl uential leaders get people to want to achieve. The infl uential leader focuses on building constructive attitudes and drawing out valuable talents in others.

07 08DECISION-MAKING SKILLS COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY

When trying to make a good decision, a person must weigh the positives and negatives of each option. For eff ective decision-making, a person must be able to forecast the outcome of each option as well, and based on all these items, determine which option is the best.

Good communication practices are at the heart of every successful business. It disseminates the information needed by employees to get things done and builds relationships of trust and commitment. The ability to communicate well is viewed as a “soft” skill.

06DELEGATING EFFECTIVELY

Good delegation can save you invaluable time. Employers who utilise delegation for the appropriate reasons and for the individuals who can handle the responsibility will be more successful due to the unifi ed performance of supervisors and subordinates.

THE BENEFITS OF

ONLINE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Forget about attending classes for hours, sitting in an uncomfortable chair, and suffering from back pain by the end of the day. You will not be bound to physical class sessions when you opt for online education. All learning materials are provided online, so you’ll easily access them from the comfort of your home or office.

A self-paced system enables learners to make progress with a rhythm that suits them. This does not require attending live sessions; you can access the materials at any time that works for you. If you have to work or take care of your home and children during the day, you can study at night. That’s an advantage the traditional educational system cannot beat.

The fact that online programs are cheaper when compared to the ones held in a traditional campus setting is enough to convince you to consider them. The average tuition for online courses depends on multiple factors, so it varies from one program to another. Note, free courses don’t usually come with a certificate of completion.

It doesn’t matter where your career stands at this moment; an online program will always look good on your résumé. It will show potential employers that you’re committed to learning and that you’re eager to obtain more knowledge and new skills. You will certainly become a better candidate for a job promotion.
