• R can be either ½ or -1• Solve these, you will find : • Suppose A,B,C all are 1, then the solution

gives you ½• Suppose A+B+C = 0 (a,b,c, are

What is the value of Y?


Solution • Y = 1 / (2+ 1/3+Y))• Y = 1/(6+2Y) *(3+Y)• Y= (3+Y) / (7+2Y)• 7Y +2Y^2 = 3+Y• 2Y^2 +6Y-3 = 0• = - B+ - sqrt(B^2 – 4AC)/ 2A• =[-6+sqrt(36+24)] / 4• =[-6 +sqrt60 ]/ 4 • =1.49/4 or - 13.49/4 answer.


Question on race• Goti and Monu run a 100-meter race, where Goti

beats Monu 10 metres. To do a favour to Monu, starts 10 metres behind the starting line in a second 100 metre race. They both run at their earlier speeds. Which of the following is true in connection with the second race?

• 1. Goti and Monu reach the finishing line simultaneously.

• 2. Monu beats Goti by 1 metre• 3. Monu beats Goti by 11 metres.• 4. Goti beats Monu by 1 metre.


SOLUTION

• Monu runs 90 meters, when Goti runs 100 meters. Thus when Monu will run 100 meters, Goti will run :

• 100/90 * 100 = 111.11• When Goti runs 110 meters, Monu will run: • 90/100 * 110 = 99• Since, Goti is already 10 meters ahead,

therefore He will still be winning by 1 metre. Answer.


• N persons stand on the circumference of a circle at distinct points. Each possible pair of persons, not standing next to each other, sings a two-minute song one pair after the other. If the total time taken for singing is 28 minutes, what is N?

• 1). 5 2). 7 3). 9


Solution

• Let us start with 7 The first person gets a chance to sing with 4 persons – so there are 8 minutes. There are next two persons, who also get 8 minutes each. The next person gets 4 minutes and the next two person gets 2 minutes each only. So 7 is the answer.


Solve it • In NutsAndBolts factory, one machine produces only

nuts at the rate of 100 nuts per minute and needs to be cleaned for 5 minutes after production of every 1000 nuts. Another machine produces only bolts at the rate of 75 bolts per minute and needs to cleaned for10 minutes after production of every 1500 bolts. If both the machines start production at the same time, what is the minimum duration required for producing 9000 pairs of nuts and bolts?

• 1. 130 minutes 2. 135 minutes 3. 170 minutes 4. 180 minutes


Solution

• Since bolts are produced slower, only analyse bolts and get the answer:

• 1500 bolts in 30 minutes. Thus there are 50 bolts per minutes. Thus to produce 9000 bolts = 9000/50 = 180 minutes however, last 10 minutes will be reduced (you don’t have to give it a rest of 10 minutes in the last instance). Thus we have 170 minutes as the answer.


• A father and his son are waiting at a bus stop in the evening. There is a lamp post behind them. The lamp post, the and his son stand on the same straight line. The father observes that the shadows of his head and his son’s head are incident at the same point on the ground. If the heights of the lamp post, the father and his son are 6 metres, 1.8 metres and 0.9 metres respectively, and the father is standing 2.1 metres away form the post then how far (in metres) is son standing form his father?

• 1. 0.9 2. 0.75 3. 0.6 4. 0.45


Solution

• Let the point of shadow be X from father: • 6/(2.1 +X) = 1.8/X• 6X = 3.78 + 1.8X• 4.2X = 3.78• X = .9• It is not answer…..


Solution • Now let us assume that son is Y distance from

shadow: • .9/Y = 1.8/.9• 1.8Y = .81• Y = .81/1.8• Y = .45 (this is not the answer – as this is the

distance of son from Shadow). • Distance of father from son = distance of father

from shadow – distance of son from shadow.• =.9 - .45 = .45 answer.


Radius of bigger circle is 2, what is the radius of smaller circle?


Solution

• We know that diagonal is 2* sqrt(2)• =2.8284• Thus when the radius is 2, the exteneded

diagonal is .8284• Let the radius of smaller circle be R• .8284 = R+R +.8284/2*R• .8284 = 4.8284R / 2• R = .8284/4.8284 * 2 = .3431 answer.


Two boats, traveling at 5 and 10 kms per hour, head directly each

other. They begin at adistance of 90 kms from each

other. How far apart are they (in kms) one minute before

they collide.1. 1/12 2. 1/6 3. 1/4 4. 1/3


Solution

• (5+10) = 15 KM per hour• They travel 15 KM per hour. We have to

find the distance that they travel during last 1 minute. Their speed is constant.

• In 60 minutes they travel 15 KM • In 1 minute they will travel : 15/60 = ¼ KM

answer.


A rectangular sheet of paper, when halved by folding it at the mid point of its longerside, results in a rectangle, whose longer

and shorter sides are in the same proportionas the longer and shorter sides of the

original rectangle. If the shorter side of theoriginal rectangle is 2, what is the area of

the smaller rectangle?


Solution

• Let us assume the longer side of the original rectangle to be X. Thus the shorter side now is X/2

• Thus as per question: • X :2 :: 2: X/2• Solving it : (X^2)/2 = 4 or X^2 = 8• X = Sqrt (8) = 2.828


If the sum of the first 11 terms of an arithmetic progression equals that

of the first 19terms, then what is the sum of the

first 30 terms?• Formula of Arithmetic progression is

= A + (N-1)D• Sum of AP = N/2 (2A + (n-1)D)• 11/2 (2A+ 10D) = 19/2 (2A + 18D)


Solution….

• 11/2 (2A+ 10D) = 19/2 (2A + 18D)• 11A + 55D = 19A + 171D• Or 8A + 116D = 0• Or 2A + 29D = 0• Putting the value: sum of 30 numbers is : • 30/2 (2A + 29D) = 0 answer.


If a man cycles at 10 km/hr, then he arrives at a certain place at 1 p.m.

If he cycles at15 km/hr, he will arrive at the same place at 11 a.m. At what sped must

he cycle to getthere at noon?


Solution

• Let us assume the distance to be X• X / 10 - X / 15 = 2 hours• 5X / 150 = 2• 5X = 300• X = 60 • When driving at speed of 10, he took 6

hours, while he has to cover it in 5 hours, we should drive at 12 KM per hour Ans.


On January 1, 2008 two new societies : S1 and S2 are formed,

each with n numbers. On thefirst day of each subsequent month,

S1 adds b members while S2 multiples its current

numbers by a constant factor r. Both the societies have the same number

of members on July 2, 2008. If b = 10.5n, what is the value of r?


Solution …

• B = 10.5n• So after 6 months we have 6*10.5N = 63N• R is also multiplying simultaneously. • N*R^6 = 63N+n• R^6 = 64• R = 2 answer.
