NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

A MOOING STORYNorthumbria, near Newcastle (England), played host

last Sunday to a live cowboy shot starring a platoon ofarmed policemen and spectators awestruck by the beau-tiful ‘Bessie’, a brown cow grazing in a farm after her twofellow runaway companions were chased away and recov-ered by stone-age bystanders.

Unconcerned by all the noise and revolt that the spec-tacle of a quiet meal produced in the two legged creaturesaround her, Bessie, who had jumped the fence of her farmearlier (spooked by some people walking dogs nearby), wasquietly chewing at the lush grass along a field adjoining ahighway, probably thanking James Cameron for such freemeals to cows, And blessing the Prime Minister by lettingout a full throttled moo as grateful acknowledgement to 10,Downing Street.

Northumbrian policemen seem to suffer from a scarcityof excitement from the looks of it, as they turned what wasa routine scene in India of three cows or more per km ofhighway chewing cud peacefully on the medians, into athriller film police chase by using 15 armed vehicles, fivesnipers in full gear and a helicopter to give chase to the threewretched bovines which were considered a ‘serious risk’ tothe motorists and public. In Bessie’s understanding ofEnglish, a leafy repast is the universal food of all livingbeings, man or animal. She would’ve been astonished toknow that she was considered as ‘dangerous to public’, andmust have wondered why all the bobbies and miscellaneousmorons were raising hell at her for just chewing a few cuds!

Anyway, the dozens of garrulous chasers, after an adrena-line spiking three-hour cow chase, the closing of severalhighways and extensive use of armed constabulary, seemedto have imagined that the ISI in bovine form had sproutedon a patch of grassy land, and shot dead the poor, innocentBessie who must have been thinking that the free meal wasin honour of the birth of the newest princess Charlotte!Wonder why no one thought of using the more practical andhumane tranquilliser to capture the animal!

When I read this piece of news in The Hindu recently,I was awestruck, wondering what these Northumbrianpolicemen would do if they came to India and encounteredour wandering holy cows chewing cud on every other road, secure in the knowledge that in this holy land, before anymotorist, THEY had the right of way!

Alas, the unfortunate Bessie was shot dead by policemenwho seem to have emerged from caves where they dweltwith their ancestors since the dawn of mankind. Yes, Iemphasise MANKIND. On that note, Mumbai ought to benext year’s Nobel Peace Prize nominee for de-beefingMaharashtra!
