TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema Music 28A critical analysis of the film music of Papanasam Sivan by

Murugadasa in his magazine attracted much attention and isstill being talked about by old-timers.

A talent scout, Murugadasa had two young men of multi-faceted talents and skills - A. K. Sekhar and K. Ramnoth - asAssistants in his magazine. Later, the three, ‘Murugadasa-Ramnoth-Sekhar’, formed a talented trio and contributedimmensely to early Tamil cinema as top technicians.

Papanasam Sivan and Kothamangalam Subbu penned thelyrics for ‘Nandanar’. Sivan used some of the original songs of‘Nandan Charitram’. In some, only the first lines (pallavi) and,in some, the original ragas were used. Kothamangalam Subbucontributed the folk songs.

M. D. Parthasarathy and S. Rajeswara Rao were in chargeof the musical arrangement, orchestration, and backgroundmusic score. Parthasarathy was a trained classical Carnaticmusician who had worked for All India Radio (AIR), Trichybefore he joined Gemini Studios in 1941.

Saluru Rajeswara Rao has been rightly acclaimed as one ofthe finest film music composers of India. A boy prodigy and theson of a harmonium-player, he made his debut as film musiccomposer when he was only nineteen in ‘Illalu’ (1939, Telugu). He joined Gemini Studios in 1941 when Vasan launched his ownstudio on Mount Road, Madras. Rao composed music for manyfilms in many languages for many producerslike Vasan, B. N. Reddi, Nagi Reddi-Chakrapani, and createdimmortal melodies, like those in Missiamma, which are popu-lar to this day. A versatile genius, he was at home with themusic of both East and West.

As a lad, in early 1930s, he acted in Telugu films with success. He sang well too. His privately recorded gramophone discs soldlike hot cakes in the bygone decades. His songs like ‘Challagaalilo Yamuna’, ‘Ooooo Vibhavaree’ and ‘ Kala ganti’ areimmortal melodies remembered and hummed to this day aftersixty and more years…

‘Nandanar’, not surprisingly, was a veritable musical feastwith as many as 32 songs in it. Dhandapani Desikar sangfifteen of them and many of them became popular. PapanasamSivan, Parthasarathy and Rajeswara Rao used a wide rangeof ragas for these songs.

Interestingly the film begins with an off-screen backgroundsong as the credit titles roll: ‘Aananda nadamidum paadhan’(Kedaragowla) rendered by S. S. Mani, a close relative ofPapanasam Sivan.

Mani assisted Sivan and sang in films as voice-lending ‘play-back’ singer. One such film was S. M. Sriramulu Naidu’s hit‘Kannika’ in which he sang for the hero T. E. Varadan.

The songs sung by Dhandapani Desikar in the movie are‘Piravaa varam thaarum’ (Lathangi), ‘Sivaloka naadhanaikandu’ (Nadhanamakriya), ‘Paavi parayan indha ooril’ (Thodi),Enakkum iranginaan embiraan’ (Kedaragowla), ‘Ellorumvaarungal’ (Bilahari), ‘Thillai Ambala’ (Ragamalika), ‘Kaanavendamo’ (Sriranjani), ‘Jaathiyulum kadaiyen’ (Ragamalika),‘Kaamam agatriya thooyavan’ (Gummi song), ‘HaraharaJagadeesa’ (Sindhubhairavi), ‘Ennappan allavaa’ (Varaali, this song became a hit), ‘ Ayye metha kadinam’ (Ragamalika,‘Varugalaamo ayyaa’ (Maanji, this song also became a hit.),‘Veeradu muyalgal’ (Ragamalika) and ‘Pittham theliyamarundhu’ (Sankarabharanam). This last song, rendered ongramophone disc by K. B. Sundarambal during the 1930s ispopular to this day.).

The well-known handsome singing actor, screenwriter, stu-dio-owner and more, Serukalathur Sama, who played theBrahmin landlord, Vedhiyar also sang a couple of songs in thismovei. He had a long innings in Tamil cinema as a characteractor for nearly three decades and, during his day, was one ofthe popular figures of South Indian cinema.

Besides Desikar and Sama, others in the cast of ‘Nandanar’included Kothamangalam Subbu, L. Narayana Rao, M. R.Swaminathan, V. P. S. Mani, ‘Pottai’ Krishnamurthy, K. S.Angamuthu, Gnanambal, and M. S. Sundari Bai.

A ‘Shiva Thaandavam’ dance number was rendered by thelatter-day star and fine actor, Ranjan of ‘Chandralekha’ fame. This was his third movie and in the credit titles his nameappeared as ‘Ranjan, B. A, M.Litt.’ (To be continued)

LETTERS TO THE EDITORBoys ride bicycles on walkers’ path

Sir, The Corporation Park in 12th Avenue, Ashok Nagar iswell maintained. It is a big park and has a number of facilitiesfor visitors, especially senior citizens and children.

However, there are two shortcomings. There are no railingsto hold or use as support on the sides of the walkers’ path whichmakes it difficult and also risky for the elderly.

The second drawback is there are no lights in the park. By lateevening, it gets dark and a number of boys start riding bicycleson the walkers’ path causing hindrance to others.

I appeal to the Corporation to install lights in the park, erectrailings along the walkers’ path and prevent its misuse forriding cycles. Dr. K. R. Chidambara Kumarasamy, 53rd

Street, Ashok Nagar

Appeal on traffic signalsSir, With reference to your report ‘Traffic signals at impor-

tant junctions not working’(Sept. 17-23 issue), the officials concerned must not only

repair traffic signals which are not working but also installlights at other busy junctions in the neighbourhood to ease
