THEPICTURE-THENEEDTheprogrammewepresentedlastyear,LeanBusinessExcellence-Malta2011(detailsonhttp://www.scodanibbio.com/malta2011/)wasaremarkablesuccess,withmultipledayworkshopsattendedbymorethan28differententitiescomingfromboththemanufacturingandservicessectors,bothprivateandpublicenterprises.ThiswasthefirstLeanprogrammeofthisscaleevertobelaunchedontheislandstodate.

TheneedforLeanprinciplestobeadoptedwasfurtherreinforcedthroughthefeedbackobtainedbytheorganisersfromtheseparticipatingorganisationsatlastyear'sevents.Someparticipatingorganisationsreinforcedorre-vitalisedtheirleanpractices.Afewotherswentafreshintotheleanroad,launching"in-house"leaninitiativescompany-wide.Inthemeantimetheglobalsituationhasdeterioratedevenfurther:economically,financiallyandpolitically,tosaytheleast.Thetimesaheadfeaturearecessivescenarioaffectingdramaticallytheperformanceandeventhesurvivaloforganisationsofanysizeandnature.
