What is the X-Games?

• “ESPN’s X Games is the ultimate action sports event, attracting adrenalin-crazed athletes from across the globe who continuously push the boundaries and keep coming back to defy gravity, and belief – drawing record audiences with an insatiable appetite for the extreme.”

• The X-games is an extreme sport competition that is presented twice a year by ESPN. Athletes from all over the world compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as cash and prizes.

• X-Games events tend to vary year to year, but they generally consist of skiing, snowboarding, BMX biking and skateboarding.

• The “X” in X- Games symbolizes many things.

• X is short for Extreme, which many of the sports are.

• X is also a mathematical symbol of the unknown and many fans come to expect this about the X-Games.

• X also refers to the generation born between the early 1960’s and 1980’s. This was the intended audience for the X-games.

• Now there target audience is Generation Y born between 1980 and 2001

History of the X-Games

• The X-games first launched in 1995 in Rhode Island.

• It was originally called the “extreme games” and included skateboarding, bungee jumping roller blading, mountain biking and sky surfing.

• ESPN spent reportedly $10 million on the 1995 X-Games and drew 200,ooo spectators.

• The franchise became so successful that in 1997 ESPN launched the Winter X Games featuring skiers and snowboarders.

• The winter event got more extreme with sports like snowmobile freestyle and ice climbing.

Winter and Summer Games

• The first Winter X-Games was held in Big Bear Lake California, in 1997.

• The winter X Games is held on a snowy mountain environment and features winter sports like snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling.

• The Winter X Games are held in late January in Aspen, Colorado.

• Colorado has hosted the X-Games since 2002, but there contract expired this past January.

• The Summer X-Games is held in a warm environment and includes competition in skateboarding, BMX Biking, motorcycling, rally car racing and surfing.

• The Summer X-Games are held in July in Los Angeles

• After this year, the Summer X- Games will be moved to Austin, Texas.

• Scott Guglielmino, ESPN's senior vice president for programming and Global X, said Austin's vibrant spirit, as well as the potential for a "festival feel" at COTA, helped sway X Games decision-makers.

Kieren Perrow who is the commissioner for the Association of Surfing Professionals. (ASP)

His primary job is maintain and preserve the integrity of competition by keeping tabs on judges, venues, scheduling and ranking

Championship

• The X-Games is just like the Olympics, they hand gold, silver and bronze medals.

• They also hand out prize money, which many athletes complained that they were being underpaid.

• Winners can earn $50,000 for the take the top prize in any event.

Pros and Cons of Extreme Sports

• Pros:

• The thrill of pulling off amazing tricks.

• Offers opportunities to million of kids who don’t enjoy team sports.

• Extreme sports lets kids be more creative and imaginative than sports like football or soccer

• Extreme Sports can also build confidence and discipline.

• Cons:

• Risk of serious injury. (4 million injuries since 2000)

• Beginners often attempts stunt that are beyond there skill level.

• Kids often practice these sports withour adult supervision.

• Helmets isn’t required for skateboarders.
