BIM in Malaysia’s Context

• The BIM initiatives is still uncoordinated

• While BIM uptake is still at its infancy stage however, has gained serious attention from both;

– Public Sector and

– Private Sectors

ISSUES for a Wider BIM Adoption

Despite industry awareness of potential of BIM, AEC industry are yet to utilize it aggressively

Perception of BIM could incur higher additional cost

Designer are still familiar and happy in using AutoCAD rather than BIM

BIM software is complex, tedious and require long and specific training

ISSUE 1

Despite industry awareness of potential of BIM, AEC industry are yet to utilize it and facing slow change in the BIM implementation

This could relates to the perception of usefulness and ease-of-use of the new technology and the fearful of changes by the users.

ISSUE 2

Perception of BIM could incur higher additional cost

Financial exposure and return on investment is usually the biggest stumbling block for technology investment. While the implementation of BIM is said do not offer enough financial gain. While, the life-cycle costing of the project need to be scrutinize in order to quantify the overall financial benefit of implementing BIM

ISSUE 3

The expert in BIM is still lacking in Malaysia, the manual coordination checking is still perceived to be simpler compared to the clash detection and analysis through BIM.

Designer are still familiar and choose to use AutoCAD rather than BIM software

ISSUE 4

In some aspects, BIM software is considered as complex and require training, practice and experience. For the beginners, the process of BIM adoption will cause reduction of productivity and work efficiency will be effected

BIM software is complex, tedious and require long and specific training
