Making Your Project, Come To Live
An E-Learning Course To Get You Started
Created By: Noe Granado
Hi!, my name is Noe, in this instructional unit
you will be creating a Windows Movie Maker
project……. Follow the instructions and you will
be on your way to making your projects come to
live!
Remember to Familiarized
Yourself with the Menu Bar,
before you continue…
Once you have spent time familiarizing yourself with the menu bar, then you are ready to continue. If
you are interested in making this instructional unit personal, then have ready some personal/student
pictures and a video clip of your family/students. This will personalize this project, making it your own.
Keep in mind that Windows Movie Maker has two of views: Storyboard View & Timeline View. For the
purpose of this section you will use “StoryBoard View”. Before finalizing this section, feel free to add as
many pictures/videos as you want. All imported images/video clips, go into a “Collections Folder”.
Saving the project:
Click on “File” “Save Project” “File name: MyFirstMovie” “Save”
Make sure that you Click on save every time you make a change

Select the Picture file(s)
Drag Picture to “StoryBoard”
HINT: Throughout this document you
can click on “Ctrl+Scroll Wheel of your
Mouse” it will allow you to zoom in &
out
Step Two: Edit Video Clip(s) and Graphic(s)
In step one you added video clip(s) and pictures. If you feel comfortable with these clips and graphics
then continue using them throughout this instructional unit. If you wish to change them, do so now
before continuing with step two. Let us get started with step two! In order to be in TimeLine View make
sure that you click on “Show TimeLine”. Clicking on the same button will toggle you back and forth from
Storyboard to Timeline. In this section you will learn how to “Edit” the video clip and “Edit” the sound
volume. In the other sections that follow, you will be familiarized with adding title overlays and effects.
Click on the video clip and place the mouse at the end of the clip. When you see the double red
arrows “Click and drag to trim clip”. Drag the clip to the left to shorten the video clip. This will
allow the video clip to be shorter in length. So, instead of the movie clip ending, it will end at
whatever point you stopped dragging the double red arrow.
Now click on the video clip and place the mouse at the beginning of the clip. When you see the
double red arrows “Click and drag to trim clip”. Drag the clip to the right to shorten the video
clip. This will allow the video clip to be shorter in length. So, instead of the movie clip starting
from the beginning, it will start at whatever point you stopped dragging the double red arrow.
Optional: You can click on the video clip and press delete, then drag the video to the timeline
again and start editing it all over again (Trial and Error).
NOTE: If you only want certain parts of the clips to play, then do the following steps, Otherwise
Skip This Step.
Decide what part of the video clip you want people to see.
Edit the video, so that it plays only that part
Drag the video down to the Time Line, AGAIN (Remember, at this point you have the
video twice on the Time Line, right next to each other). Now edit the video, so that it
plays the next part you want the people to see.
Continue doing steps 2 & 3 until you are satisfied.
GREAT JOB! You have completed the first
step! Remember to switch to “TimeLine
View” for Step Two…..
Don’t forget to click on “Save” to assure
that you don’t lose you progress, in case
of a power outage!
Many times you take video and the people are talking. Most of the times when you create a project on
Windows Movie Maker you want to add background music (which we will learn how to add later in this
course). But when you add the music you are not able to hear what the people are saying. Or, you don’t
want to hear what the people are saying and only have the background music. Either way you want it;
these are the steps you take:
1. Click on the video clip that you wish to modify the sound. You can pick and choose what video
clips you are interested in modifying.
a. If you are interested in modifying all the volume on the entire video project, in one step,
then do the following, otherwise just continue with step 2:
i. Go to “Tools”
ii. Click on “Audio Levels”
iii. Adjust the volume as you wish.
2. Select “Clip” on the menu bar
3. Select “ Audio”
4. Select “Volume”
EDIT VIDEO CLIP(S)
Time Line View
Click and Drag to Edit the Video Clip
a
Remember to trial and error, by playing the Time Line to see how the project is looking. Now let us edit
an image.
Trimming the image is different from trimming the video clip, in the sense that when you trim the video
clip it shortens in length, but when you trim a picture it shortens in the amount of seconds the picture
will play during the presentation. These are the steps to take, when trimming a picture:
You are doing GREAT! Trial & Error will only
make you a better Editor with Windows
Movie Maker…..Now let us modify the
sound….. Don’t forget to click on save…
Click on the image clip and place the mouse at the end of the clip. When you see the double red
arrows “Click and drag to trim clip”. Drag the clip to the left to trim the image. This will allow the
image to be shorter in time. So, instead of the image clip appearing for 10seconds it can appear
for 5 seconds. Unlike the video clip, with the image clip, it makes no difference if you trim the
image started from the right side or dragging it from the left side.
Optional: You can click on the image clip and press delete, then drag the image to the timeline
again and start editing it all over again (Trial and Error).
NOTE: If you want the image to last more than usual, then the only thing you have to do is:
Drag the image in from the task pane to the timeline again, right next to the original
one. Since you have to images on the Time Lime, it will play each one for 10 seconds,
making it appear on the screen longer than usual.
EDIT GRAPHICS
Time Line View
Click and Drag to Trim the Image
WOW! You are doing GREAT! You
have just learned how to Import and
Edit video/pictures.

By this point in this instructional unit you have learned imported/Edited videos/pictures. You have
familiarized yourself with the Movie Task bar and you are ready to continue with step three. In step
three you will be adding audio and music. Keep in mind that you can always lower the sound of the
video clip, in order to have a better audio background, refer to step two “Editing Video Clip(s). There are
two ways to add audio to your project: 1) Using the “Narrative Timeline” from Windows Movie Maker
2) Using an outside voice recording source that you will import as audio, e.g. Audacity. Let us start first
by using the Narrative Timeline.
To add narrative click on the “Narrative Timeline” icon”
Click on “Start Narrative” to begin recording your voice ( It’s always a good idea to write out a
script of what you are going to narrate)
When you have completed recording your voice, then click on “Stop Narration”
A “Save Windows Media File” dialog box will pop up
Give your narration file name, then click on “Save”
Your narration file will go to the collection task pan and the timeline, then click on “Done”
Playback the narration to approve or edit your narration (Refer to Step 2, for editing sound)

“Narration1”
The narrative file will be available on the Task Pane and it will automatically go the timeline in the
Audio/Music section, then click on “Done”
It’s always a good idea to write
out a script of what you are
going to narrate…..
IMPORT AUDIO – FROM AN OUTSIDE SOUCE – USING AUDACITY
Click Here to learn how to download Audacity, Only if you are
interested in using Audacity as an outside source for recording your
voice, OTHERWISE SKIP THIS STEP.
Once you have recorded
your voice and edited to
your convenience,
Then you export you
narration into a folder on
your computer
Then you go to your
Windows Movie Maker
Project and import your
Audio
Refer to Step 1, for
importing Media

to see how it’s looking….
Importing Music:
Click on “Import audio or music” from the Movie Task Bar under “Capture Video”
Select the music file you wish to import
Drag the music file from the collection task pane to the Timeline
Edit the music to your benefit, if you need to refresh your memory on how to edit, and then
refer back to Editing, from step 2.
IMPORT MUSIC:
(Supported Files/Formats: asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv and dvr-ms)
Click on “Import audio or music”
Select the Music File
Drage Music File to Timeline
Step Four: Add Titles and Credits
You have completed step three, which means you are well familiarized with Importing and Editing
Videos and or Pictures. You are also aware of selecting the appropriate audio/music files. You are very
knowledgeable and by now you have a better overview of how Windows Movie Maker can bring your
projects to live and making the classroom room very interactive, so that students can be creative. Let us
begin step four. Let us start by adding titles:
Select a clip on the timeline, in which you want to add a title
On the Movie Task Bar select “Make titles or credits” under Edit Movie menu
Select “Add title on the selected clip in the timeline”
Type in the text you want to appear on the clip
o There are two sections in which you can type text. You may use both sections and edit
the animation, font, and color as you want it to appear on the clip. But you can also
decide to write text on only one of the sections. If you type text only on the top section,
then the text will appear to be in the middle of the clip. If you type text only on the
bottom section, then the text will appear to be on the bottom of the clip. If you only
want to see on section box available, and not two, then do the following steps:
Click on “Change the title animation”
Scroll all the way up and select one of the options under “Titles, One Line”, this
will show only one section available, where you can type your text.
When you’re done editing your text, then click on “Done, add title to movie”
