In the last few months we’ve had two bad cases of animal cruelty. The first was “Lee Roy”. He was a kitten who had been thrown out of a car on the Crosstown Expressway. One of our prior adopters saw him stick his head out from the sewer and was able to pull over and rescue him before he got hit by a car. He had road burns from his ordeal. His face was scratched up from the concrete, his eye was injured and his pads were bleeding. After he completed his medical treatment and started to heal, he was taken on our weekly Fox TV adoption segment. A retired veterinarian came in to adopt little Lee Roy and he will be spending his Christmas in a safe, loving environment.

The second case was “Katie”, the 7 month old terrier puppy that was nearly starved to death. This time a member of the animal loving public was driving down Fowler Avenue. She thought she saw a dead dog on the

shoulder and when the dog lifted her head, she pulled over. Katie was so weak from starvation she was unable to stand. She brought her to HSTB and she was immediately transferred to Dr. Katie Myer at the Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service. We named her “Katie” because Dr. Myer helped save her life. When she was stable, she was returned to HSTB for care. Our own Dr. Karla Bard took her home to foster her until she became strong and healthy enough for someone to adopt her. Within a few days, Dr. Bard’s husband fell in love with this little girl and decided to adopt her. Katie will be spending all of her holidays with the Bard Family where she will receive as much love and affection as any dog can handle.

We would be unable to have such happy endings without our loyal supporters and donors. I wish you and your family a very wonderful holiday.

Sincerely,

Sherry SilkExecutive Director

October 16th was National Feral Cat Day and in honor of it the Humane Society of Tampa Bay sterilized 122 feral cats! Feral cat caretakers also received a free bag of cat food for each cat they had spayed or neutered. This program is always in need of donated canned or dry cat food.

TNR has proven to be an effective and humane way to control the cat overpopulation. It is estimated there are over 200,000 feral cats in Hillsborough County. If you are interested in helping with TNR efforts, please contact Mary Ann O’Donnell, TNR Manager, at 813-625-0910.

Feral Cat Day…

When kittens are found living in feral cat colonies most trappers will try and capture kittens for rehab. When a kitten is captured and is 6 weeks old or less, it can usually be socialized to become a loving pet. Sometimes this happens in as little time as a week or two. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s TNR Manager works many hours to place these kittens in volunteers’ homes. These volunteers understand the specific needs feral kittens have and work patiently with them so they learn how to trust humans. In 2011, almost 400 kittens found homes after being rehabbed by staff and volunteers. If you are interested in helping foster feral kittens and helping them become loving house cats, please contact MaryAnn O’Donnell at 813-625-0910 for more information.

A dog came into the Wellness Clinic in a pitiful state. The animal would not eat or drink, and was vomiting and defecating blood. The client did not have any money, but this dog needed help. We had x-rays taken and found an obstruction. Dr. Yeruva immediately took it into surgery. A corn cob was removed from this poor dog’s stomach! He was hospitalized in our clinic for 2 days to make sure everything healed well and was returned to his owner with a warning to keep an eye on what the dog eats.

Photo of the actual nickel taken from the cat’s stomach.

HSTB Wellness Clinic…Making a Difference….

A woman came into our Wellness Clinic with a pit bull puppy that she had found in the river. He had been tied all over with fishing line and was floating between two pieces of wood when she rescued him. He was covered in insect bites and small wounds, and frankly lucky to be alive. We treated his wounds, gave him his first set of vaccinations, and sent him home with antibiotics. Three weeks later she returned with the pup for its booster vaccines and he had healed beautifully. Not only that, but he is now fat, happy, and obviously in a loving home that will treat him as a member of the family.

A woman brought her cat into the Wellness Clinic because she was not eating and was starting to act lethargic. Dr. Yeruva did his examination and sent her out to get the cat’s intestinal tract x-rayed. When she came back with the x-rays, it was found that there was what looked like a metal ring blocking the cat’s intestines! We immediately scheduled her surgery with Dr. Bard, but we were all wondering how on earth does a cat end up swallowing a ring?? Once the surgery was performed and we spoke with the client, we got our answer.

Dr. Bard removed the obstruction, and after looking at it, we saw that it was a nickel! Only the outside of a nickel is actually silver and the thinner coating on the center of the coin had been eaten away while inside the cat’s body to make a donut shape. We called the client to let her know the cat was doing well, and soon found out that her child had a habit of ‘flicking’ coins to make them spin on their sides across the floor. Apparently, this spinning nickel looked like a yummy toy to the cat! Needless to say, she has asked her child not to do that with the cat around anymore.

Happy and healthy at home!

Volunteer of the Quarter…This quarter, we would like to spotlight Krista Sparkman. Krista became a volunteer in June of 2010. When she volunteers at the shelter, you’ll see her doing what she does best…taking pictures. Krista is a professional photographer who is passionate about saving animals. She comes in every week and takes adorable photos of our dogs and cats and puts them on our web site. To see the animals through her eyes is amazing! She really makes the animals personalities come through in her pictures. And it helps them to get adopted when potential adopters can see the sparkle in their eyes from the web site. Krista has an amazing ability for bringing out the beauty in every animal. Thank you Krista for being a voice for the animals…through your camera lens!

In the fall of 2009 volunteer Angela Kent started collecting pet food for Casper’s Cupboard to help feed hungry animals in the Tampa Bay community. She started with two pet food drives at AT&T and over the last two years has been able to add several other locations.

The following groups have held one or two food drives a year for Casper’s Cupboard:

AT&T Pioneers - Tampa Mixed Club chapterHappy Tails Pet Sitting - Citrus Park

Incarnation Catholic SchoolSt. Timothy Catholic ChurchSt. Mark’s Catholic Church

Sacred Heart Academy Student CouncilSacred Heart Catholic Church

The locations below have had continuous food drives in their stores for the last two years.

Barks by the Bay - Hyde ParkDog Lovers - CarrollwoodThe Hound’s Meow - Lutz

Through October of 2011 Angela has helped collect 27,000 pounds of pet food!!

A special thank you to Angela for all of her hard work and devotion to making sure community animals don’t go hungry!

If you would like to donate to Casper’s Cupboard, please drop off any cat or dog food at the shelter during normal business hours.

Successful Adoptions

We adopted Sophie two months ago. She is an amazing dog who has added so much joy to our home. She goes pretty much everywhere with us, and loves to ride in the car and go on long walks. She is such a blessing to our family, and we are forever grateful we decided to stop by the Humane Society that day. We are also so thankful to the person who found her and brought her in. She’s in a “forever home” and is being loved and cared for the way she deserves.

- Pam Curry

I just want to say thanks to everyone that helped my family get Zuko and a special thanks to all who supported him in making him a part of our life. He was shy at first which is to be expected in a new home but after a couple of hours he made his way around and is doing very well at this time. He’s very cuddly and playful.

- Robert Till

We went to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay in November, 2010. It was our first visit to the shelter and had no intention on bringing home a dog that day. Soon we came across a little 6 pound chiweenie puppy. Once we got him out into the play pen his vibrant personality showed quickly. Jack formally known as ‘Henry’ has grown to be a huge part of our family. He loves going for long walks, snuggling, running laps around the house, and playing with his many many toys. Thank you Humane Society for bringing such a joy to our lives!

- Jessie Wheeler

After years of longing for a dog of our own, we found Wilfred at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. We knew instantly this was our new companion and best friend. The staff at the shelter was so friendly and thorough during the adoption process, answering all of our questions and sending us off with the tools we needed to be successful puppy parents. Wilfred has since become the love of our lives. He loves to go on runs, play fetch, and go to the dog park. Thank you to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay staff for uniting us with Wilfred, who brings such joy and happiness to our lives.
