The Humane Society of Tampa Bay helps animals in a variety of ways. We have been located in West Tampa for 103 years but, in reflecting on these past weeks, we go well beyond our borders to help animals in need.

On January 22nd, we received a Commendation from Tampa City Council for receiving the prestigious American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation. It was presented by Councilwoman Yvonne Yolie Capin, who sits on our Advisory Council. It was certainly an honor for our hospital to be recognized as the first non-profit hospital in the State of Florida to receive this award. I shared with City Council that our hospital treated over 47,000 dogs and cats in 2014. Many of our clients cannot afford veterinary care for their pets and without this hospital many animals would have suffered. Many of these clients drive from outside our county to get affordable care for their pets. It is one of the many ways that we help our citizens keep the pets that they love.

On February 5th, we were selected by the Governor’s office to feature one of our homeless animals at the Cabinet meeting which coincided with the State Fair. We selected Charlie who came to us as a dirty, thin, older, stray poodle. After cleaning him up and taking care of his medical needs, we thought he would be a perfect dog to represent HSTB. At the meeting, Attorney General Pam Bondi walked him around and a lovely couple saw him, fell in love and adopted him. Charlie is now living with Sergio Chaves, a veteran and Purple Heart recipient who didn’t mind that Charlie was a senior dog. He will now travel by RV around the country with his new family.

Lastly, we have taken a stand for a cat named “Bart”. He was severely injured by a car and was thought to be dead. He was then buried alive in a shallow grave. Fortunately, Bart managed to crawl out of his grave and return to a neighborhood where he was being fed. He was eventually brought in to our hospital. Our veterinarians removed his badly damaged eye, surgically repaired his cracked pallet and wired his broken jaw (and neutered him!) The story of this amazing miracle cat has been reported across the globe. Bart has received well wishes from Paris, Sydney and a small city in Poland. As of this writing, we are fighting to legally keep Bart until we can find him a suitable home. Photo timeline on page 4

is lo ve

During the first week of December, we received an urgent plea from Pasco County Animal Services. They had taken in a stray momma dog and her seven four- week-old puppies. The momma dog had been abandoned and was very thin and heartworm positive. The shelter was full and they literally had no room for this family. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay decided to give this mom and her pups a Christmas miracle.

One of our wonderful volunteers went to pick up the spirited group and drove them promptly to our shelter to receive baths and names. Mom was named Noel and her bundles of joy were all given Christmas-themed names.

The family was placed into a loving foster home for a month where the puppies grew, and mom gained some weight. After Noel weaned the pups, she was spayed and immediately began her heartworm treatment. The Christmas pups were all adopted as soon as they were spayed and neutered and we’re happy to say, Noel began 2015 in her very own home.

Above: We’re not sure who is luckier- Eve, Joy & Coal who got to go home to one lucky family, or the lucky family!

Right: Noel’s happy ending! Finally she’ll be treated like the queen she really is!

Far Right: Noel & her pups enjoyed their photo shoot with Jim McCook at our shelter.

JANUARY 23 Bart was brought to us after having been hit by a car and buried alive,

only to crawl out of his grave.

JANUARY 27 Bart received surgery at our

hospital to remove his eye,

repair his broken jaw and cracked

palate and be neutered.

JANUARY 28 AM Bart rests

comfortably after surgery and adjusts well to his

feeding tube.

JANUARY 28 PM Bart receives a

blood transfusion from one of our

brave shelter cats to help relieve his anemia and give

him some energy.

FEBRUARY 2Bart takes his first few nibbles of food

on his own, then settles down for

a nap.

FEBRUARY 6After eating full bowls of food on

his own since February 4, Bart’s

feeding tube is removed.

SINCE HIS ARRIVAL The outpouring of support for Bart

has been overwhelming. He has received numerous gifts, cards

and emails from admirers and fans across the globe.

FEBRUARY 11Bart is well

enough to receive his first, full-body

bath from our groomer. He lets us know how he feels about that!

Did you know HSTB hosts children’s birthday parties? Birthday celebrations give us another opportunity to show kids how compassion to animals is important and how one person truly can make a difference. Our parties make great memories and they will leave knowing that they supported animals in need. Many children ask guests to bring toys and treats for our animals instead of gifts which just adds to the waggin’ good fun!

Our guests are given use of the conference center, complete with tables and chairs, where they can set up and decorate as they would like. This room is private and has great views of our play yards.

The cost is $175 and includes activities for the children, a tour of the shelter, special furry guests, and more. Usually, the most memorable part of the party is when the birthday child gets to name an adoptable puppy or kitten!

For more information or to book your child’s next birthday party at HSTB, contact our Volunteer Manager: 813-774-4344 or [email protected]

We love cats; little and BIG! One of our amazing veterinarians, Dr. Justin Boorstein, is experienced in exotics and has helped care for many of Big Cat Rescue's "kids". We are more than happy to share his skills, as well as our state-of-the-art equipment, to help some of these beautiful creatures when they aren't feeling up to snuff. In return, Big Cat Rescue helps foster dozens of our underage kittens each year until they are old enough for adoption.

This partnership with BCR is an exciting one that shows the power of teamwork when it comes to helping animals in need. We look forward to continuing our partnership and to meeting many more "wild things"!

We adopted “Poof” formally named Hayden back in 2009! He’s grown to be such a beautiful, smart and fantastic member of our family. He just turned 5 years old and is as spunky as a puppy!

He’s the best thing in our lives, unconditional love and then some! We couldn’t thank you more for giving us the opportunity for him to come in our lives furever.

I recently adopted Annie (used to be Lolli) from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. I knew when I first saw her that she needed to come home with me. It’s only been 2 weeks since I brought her home, but we have become best buddies! She is absolutely the sweetest, most full of love, dog that I have ever met. All she ever wants is to give hugs (which she actually does by standing up on her back feet when you say “give me a hug”) and have her belly rubbed. She is my own little shadow who doesn’t leave my side. She has been an absolute blessing and I am so thankful I adopted her.

Thank you to the Humane Society for providing myself and others the opportunity to find their new best friend!

Poof then

I am a librarian at a school for animal science. I came to the Humane Society of Tampa looking for gerbils for my library. We adopted two brothers, who are now named Fred and George Weasley, and they have lived up to their names. The students love to come into the media center and watch Fred and George and their crazy antics. They are constantly rearranging their tunnels, and popping up out of the substrate to see what is going on. They also like to sit in the exercise wheel at the same time, and then neither one can make it go.

The students are learning all sorts of things about gerbils and the biomes they come from. Thank you for our super cute learning aids! They will be horribly spoiled for the rest of their lives.

I adopted Fox (previously named “Spicey”) from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay last January. I cannot imagine life without her. She follows me around, talks non-stop, and loves to cuddle. I am so grateful to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for Fox.

Siamese cats are wonderful, but they can become stressed in a shelter environment. I was able to see how great Fox was because the volunteers were aware of her needs. Thank you for all of your work and for the happy ending that Fox and I share.

Shanin Shapiro Shanin Shapiro has been volunteering with us since 2012. She is an amazing cat companion, adoption assistant, and also does special/outreach events for us! Her passion for HSTB is so evident in all that she does, and she always has a smile on her face! Shanin takes pride in representing us and we are so lucky to have her as part of our HSTB family!

Shanin, thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many animals!

Bella was found by a Good Samaritan at the site of a house fire and brought in as a stray to HSTB. The Good Samaritan assumed we would have to humanely euthanize Bella due to her extensive injuries caused by the fire. However, as we do with all strays, we scanned Bella for a microchip. To our surprise, she had one! We quickly called Bella’s owner, Teresa, and learned that, in fact, her home had burned down and her other cat had died in the fire. Bella had run out of the home and couldn’t be found. Teresa had feared the worst.

Since Teresa had lost her home, her car, and her other cat in the fire, she easily qualified for our Save-A-Pet Medical Fund. Over the course of the next two weeks Dr. Konda, one

of our Animal Health Center veterinarians, took diligent care of Bella’s injuries. She quickly became a staff favorite with her sweet personality and determination to heal.

Finally the day came to reunite Bella and Teresa, and we’re not sure who was happier. What we do know is that HSTB couldn’t have been more pleased to help such a deserving family.
