    2008 Annual Report

  • CONNECTION

  • 1

CConnections run deep in the fabric of Opportunity Plan, Inc. Beginning in 1954 when Milton A. “Buff” Morris saw students in need and recognized donors could help fill that need, connections are what OPI has been about. Those same dollars invested in students’ dreams in the beginning have turned over many times and are still allowing students to reach their dreams.

Whether you are looking for assistance

achieving a degree or you have a

desire to help someone in going

    beyond their secondary training,

    OPI provides the connection

    between those receiving and those

    providing that support.

Fortunately, while that need continues to grow,

generous benefactors continue to provide. Thanks to those who made

the connections more than five decades ago, and to those who are

perpetuating the connection today. And thanks to the current bonds

between our students and contributors, that connection will carry on

    into the future.

  • 2

AAccording to Princeton University’s WordNet, connection is defined as “a relation between things or events (as in the case of one causing the other).” The 2006 American Heritage Dictionary of the American Language defines connection as “a person, especially one of influence or importance, with whom one is associated, as by kinship or common interests.”

Persons of influence … common interests … connection … Opportunity Plan, Inc.

Without a doubt, OPI is the reason our students are able to complete their educations. More importantly, however, OPI allows worthy students to connect with generous donors (persons of influence) to make it possible for those students to complete their education (common interests). That relationship (connection) is what Opportunity Plan, Inc. has been about for more than 50 years.

In 2008 OPI to made those connections inrecord numbers. Between the loan and scholarship divisions, we assisted almost 1,000 students. Approximately $800,000 was disbursed in loan funds to 93 students. Moreover, $997,776 was awarded in scholarship funds to approximately600 students. That’s almost 700 students receiving $1.8 million in aid from OPI last year alone. To put that number in perspective, we estimate we helped approximately 12,000 students in our first 50 years; OPI’s reach is obviously expanding.

OPI is the conduit that allows those students and donors to begin a relationship, and ultimately, by continuing their relationship with OPI, those students will perpetuate what our donors have been so faithful to provide. The Board of Directors and staff join me in thanking you for making those connections possible.

    To our students’ success,

    M. Keith BrownExecutive Director

  • Opportunity Plan, Inc. is governed by a board of directors who represent the Panhandle and South Plains regions of Texas. Their insight and wisdom serve to guide the organization toward continued success.

  • Hasting Invests inEmployeesThe Madge Marmaduke Scholarship has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships

P Providing entertainment isn’t the only mission Hastings Entertainment, Inc., embraces. Sam and Madge Marmaduke founded the company some 40 years ago and supported the company’s associates while steadily growing a successful entertainment company with now more than $5 million in annual sales, 150 stores and 2,000 employees. Madge Marmaduke was known for her behind-

the-scenes support of the company’s associates

and her warmth and hospitality at company

conventions. In honor of her, Hastings established

a scholarship for associates through Opportunity

    Plan, Inc. in 1988.

    “We like OPI’s philosophy of

    helping kids who might not

    otherwise be able to attend

    college,” John Marmaduke,

    Hastings CEO, said. “OPI has

    been a great facilitator and

    resource. I appreciate their

    counsel and advice.”

    4

  • 5

W “We want to support our employees in their growth,” John Marmaduke, Hastings CEO, said. “OPI has been a great help to us by overseeing all applications and awards.” Andy Etheridge, Hastings former director of human resources, received the Madge Marmaduke scholarship to use toward his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. “It was a huge help and great way for me to get on the path to a career,” Etheridge said. To date, the Madge Marmaduke Scholarship has awarded more than half a

million dollars to 115 associates, their spouses or children. Hastings’ annual golf

tournament, held each summer, continues to serve as a major source of funding

for the scholarship fund. Last year’s tournament raised $88,548.09.

“Hastings commitment to its employees is remarkable and indicative of the

kinds of ways it supports employees beyond the job,” M. Keith Brown, OPI

    executive director, said. “OPI is

    honored that Hastings demonstrates

    their confidence in the organization

by allowing us to manage the

    Marmaduke fund.”

    OPI manages approximately

    170 scholarship funds, several of

    which are designated for

    employees or members

    (as well as depenents)

    of various businesses and

    organizations.

    “These employers and

    member-based organizations

    are committed to assisting

    their constituents with

    their educational goals,”

Brown said. “It is a perfect fit

    with OPI as we continue

    connecting those who want to

    assist with those who need

    assistance.”

    If you or your organization

    would like more information

    about utilizing OPI’s scholarship

    management services, contact

"I remember dad wanted students who might miss a chance at college to have a chance," Ricky Harman, son of Vernon and Mary Harman, said. "There were students we knew and so many others that wouldn't have had chance without OPI funds."

Harman Family Has a Lasting LegacyVernon Harman’s long-time friendshipwith Buff Morrisleads to measurable returns.

    10

Giving time and resources to help students

succeed has always been a part of the Harman family

    plan.

Vernon and Mary Harman began helping students

when he served as president of the Ex-Student

Association at what was then West Texas State

University. His long-time friendship with Buff Morris,

Opportunity Plan, Inc., founder, was strengthened

through their commitment to assisting students.

Vernon became a charter member of OPI, serving as

the founding secretary/treasurer of the executive

committee, a position he held until his death in 1997.

A leader in the grain elevator and cattle feeding

business in Happy, Vernon sold the elevator to Mesa

Petroleum Company in 1979. 100 shares of stock from

that sale were converted to establish the Vernon H.

and Mary R. Harman Division of OPI.

“I spent one summer helping Mr. Morris by

    meeting students in Panhandle-area towns

who might need help with college

    costs,” Ricky Harman, their youngest

    son who currently resides in

    Weatherford, said. “There were a

    lot of students who could

afford the tuition but not the

room and board, and that would

    keep them from getting a

    degree.”

    In 2008, the Harmans’ older

son, V.H. of Lubbock, contributed a

significant gift bringing the capital of

the fund to $138,500. Since inception,

the fund has assisted 10 students with

    $146,588.79 in loans.

    “OPI is extremely

    grateful to the Harman

    family for their support

    through the years,” OPI

    President Cathryn Wright

    said. “Vernon and Mary

    were so committed to

    helping students, and

    V.H. and Ricky recognize

    that need continues

today. This gift was a wonderful way to recognize

    their parents.”

Anderson Family FundThis loan fund was established by Jim Bill and Deborah Anderson of Canadian with funds being provided to students interest and payment free as long as the student is pursuing full-time education. Priority is given to students from Hemphill County but others may benefit if Hemphill County students do not have a need.

Willard and Edith Cox ScholarshipUpon his retirement from West Texas A&M University after 29 years of dedicated service, Dr. Joseph L. Cox and his wife Brenda established this scholarship fund for students majoring in trombone, euphonium or tuba at WTAMU. Recognizing a student of at least sophomore status, the fund honors Dr. Cox’s parents.

Dr. Robert Herrington ScholarshipEstablished by former students of Dr. Herrington in appreciation of his support of them during their undergraduate career, this fund honored him on the completion of his doctoral degree in August 2008. After his unexpected and untimely death in September 2008, family, friends and former students further developed the fund to benefit students in the agriculture education program at West Texas A&M University.

Mike Horton Memorial ScholarshipThis fund was established by family and friends of Mike Horton upon his death in July 2008. Mike was born in Clarendon and resided in Canyon for many years. He is survived by his wife Vicki; son Keith and wife Leslie Wright Horton; daughter Karen and husband Daniel Esquivel and four granddaughters, Heather and Haley Horton and Kara and Kalyssa Esquivel.

Mr. K ScholarshipLongtime educator Carroll Killingsworth of Canyon established this scholarship for graduates of Happy High School where he has served on the faculty three different times during a career spanning approximately 60 years. Affectionately known by his students as Mr. K, he is currently the school counselor for Happy Independent School District.

Dan Rahlfs Memorial Scholarship FundThis fund was established by the Dan Rahlfs family and business associates in his memory. The scholarship is for a graduate of Canyon High School and may be used for an education at any college or university. Dan’s wife Penny and children Robin Rahlfs Patterson and Jason Rahlfs (both CHS graduates) select the recipient on an annual basis.

Bill Wordham Memorial Scholarship FundBill Wordham was killed in a boating accident on August 25, 2008. This fund, established by his friends and associates at Sallie Mae, Inc., in Reston, Virginia, will provide funds for Bill’s three children, Victoria, Catlin and Christina, to pursue a higher education.
