The LORD our Shepherd gives us permission to rest. 2 “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” Text Message:o David is drawing upon his experience as a shepherd:

1) Sheep have no natural means of defense against prey.2) Sheep will only lie down when free of fears.3) Sheep must be free of flies and other irritating pests.

o The force of the Hebrew verb, “He makes me…” is not that of force, but of permission.

o Several translations use the words, “He lets me…”o The picture is that of a shepherd who takes care of every

detail, so as to communicate to his precious sheep, “You can now lay down in peace.”

o Because the LORD is this kind of shepherd:You now have permission to exit the rat race!You do not have the same value on busyness as the world!You can say “no” to most things and “yes” to key things!

o Are you currently at rest internally, where it counts most?Will say “no” to some stuff in order to say “yes” spiritual rest?

1) Leading the sheep to green pastures, a condition that was

only experienced about three months of the year.2) Planning the day around the availability of water when the

sheep would be thirsty.3) Applying handmade ointments to protect the sheep from biting insects and pests.

o These words from Psalm 23 are meaningful when we realize what David faced in life. To name a few: 1) He was a fugitive on more than one occasion.2) He dealt with King Saul, who displayed all the traits of

what we would call bipolar.3) He lost his best friend, Jonathan, in battle.4) He lost a son at birth.5) He experienced treason against his throne by another son

(Absalom).o In other words, Psalm 23 has been tested and proved faithful

through any life storm!

The LORD our shepherd makes us a person of rest. 2 “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” Text Message:o We give to others what we currently possess.o When we are a person of God’s rest, we become a “rest stop”

for others in the journey of life.o In other words, Christ Who gives promises and gives rest

(Matthew 11:28-30), does so by working through us!o Who is, or has been, a “rest stop” for you in life’s weariness?

Who may you be a spiritual “rest stop” for in the near future?
