Hydration is keyBeauty starts from within. Skin will be naturally supported and hydrated by consuming sufficient water. Drink up!

MoisturizeMakeup won’t sit well on dry or flaky skin. Even oily skin needs enough moisture to reduce oil production throughout the day. Always set the stage by giving your skin what it needs before ever letting makeup touch your face.

ExfoliateExfoliation should be a weekly part of your facial routine. Exfoliating once or twice a week will keep the dead cells from building up and adding texture to the skin, which will then show through when makeup is applied. If you are getting lots of water and moisturizing well, then your skin will be regenerating cells often!

PrimerUse a good quality primer to protect your skin and provide a smooth base for makeup application.

Use the Correct ColorOkay, so this one seems like a no-brainer, right? But so many people consistently use the wrong shade or tone of foundation and powder for their natural skin tone! Check the shade along the jaw line in natural light to see if it matches well before applying. You may need a different shade in the winter than you use in the summer, and this is completely normal. Usually we don’t spend as much time out in the sun when the weather is colder, so our skin naturally lightens during the winter months, and darkens during the summer months. Always check to make sure the color you have always used is still suitable for your skin.

Know your Skin TypeIn order to ensure you are using the best cosmetics for you, know your skin type. Oily skin should stay clear of oil based foundations, instead opting for a silicon base and a pressed powder for oil absorption throughout the day. Dry skin should go for a water or cream based foundation, skipping the powder altogether, and combination skin should go with a water or silicon based foundation paired with either pressed or loose powder for a more natural finish.

Color TheoryA simple color wheel like this one can help you understand the colors that will look best on you, with your eye color, hair color, skin color, etc. If you have warm-toned skin, then spice colors will look best, cool-toned skin looks great with jewel tones and icy colors, and neutral-toned skin can usually get away with either look, as the skins undertones have equal amount of pink and blue tints.

Less is MoreWhen it comes to makeup application, less is always more. If there are things you would like to cover up using makeup, understanding color theory and using the appropriate shades to cancel out unwanted redness or dark under eye circles is better than applying heaps of concealer, which only serves to draw attention to the amount of makeup itself, rather than draw attention to your natural beauty. Makeup is a beauty enhancer, not a mask.

SanitationClean your brushes and makeup applicators at least once a week with a mild soap or baby shampoo. This keeps them nice and clean. A clean brush is essential for smooth and even application of cosmetics. It also helps to keep bacteria from forming in your makeup. If you already have problematic skin, this will be particularly important!

Hands Off!Resist the urge to touch your face. I know, after using these tips, your skin will feel amazing and you will want to touch it, but keep your hands occupied! Hands are full of bacteria and oils, which can react with the makeup and skin, causing breakouts. If you have an itch, scratch it, but refrain from resting your face in your hands or continuously rubbing your face, forehead, or cheeks. This will also help you get the maximum wear time out of your makeup without needing a touchup.

Wash the Day AwayDon’t sleep in your makeup. It may be tempting to close your eyes at the end of the day without washing your face. At night we like to get into comfortable clothes to sleep. Sleeping in tight jeans would be so uncomfortable. In the same way, your skin needs to breathe in order to be healthy, and it needs a break from a covering of products. When you brush your teeth, swipe your face with a paper towel and coconut oil, dry, then get some beauty sleep.

Have Fun!Makeup is not a necessity, it is an enhancer. Play around with it. Don’t be afraid. Rules were made to be broken, and no one was born knowing how to master the art of beauty. Experimentation is a lot of fun!
