Why is it important to move your body- Act ivity one
Make Your Home Safer
The Make Your Home Safer campaign looks at the importance of making simple and often low cost changes both inside and outside of the house to help prevent slips trips and falls With around half of all falls happening in and around the home it is important for older adults to make their homes safer
The campaign
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of making your home safer as a strategy to reduce falls amongst older adults and encourage confidence in independent living
For health and community workers helping older adults to stay healthy and independent for longer the campaign offers information and services which describe simple and low cost changes to an older persons environment
The campaign is suitable for older adults who are already independent and wish to stay in their homes for as long as possible and older adults who may be less independent than they previously were and can benefit from making changes to regain their independence

Host a Make Your Home Safer event
Events for older adults should be fun interactive and engaging Whether it be community expo information day or a morning tea with a short presentation there are plenty of options
You can also use the Make Your Home Safer education session guide (on page 8) to run a 45 minute education session The education session guide includes everything you need to ensure your participants have the knowledge and confidence to make their homes safer
There are a couple of things to consider when planning an event for older adults Tips include
- Making sure you have your speakers catering venue and other activities booked well in advance and confirm details with them a day or so before the event
- Consult older adults when planning your event they have great ideas and love to be involved in the planning
- Give detailed instructions to your guests on how to get to your event including public transport options and parking stations Be aware of emergency exits and disability access
- Consider partnering with other organisations to strengthen the event by sharing resources and expertise
- Make sure you enjoy the day Learning about making older adults homes safer and preventing falls should be a pleasant and rewarding experience

Promote your event
There are a number of avenues to promote events to older adults many of which are at no cost You might like to try
- Use our event post er to advertise your event Simply download the word document and enter in your date venue logos and any additional information before printing it
- Put up flyers or your event posters in shopping centres libraries and senior centres- Share your event on social media and ask your followers to share it- Ask your local council to promote your event- Advertise in your local newspaper or radio station

The information contained in this guide will help you to deliver falls prevention education specifically on hazards in and around the home in an engaging and interactive way
The educator guide includes
- Useful resources to print and order before your session - Make Your Home Safer session plans - Make Your Home Safer PowerPoint presentation slides - Make Your Home Safer quiz and evaluation forms
During the session you will start by introducing yourself and explain what the purpose of the workshop is Begin the session by providing the group with falls statistics and explain using the key messages why making your home safer is important in preventing a slip trip or fall Try to keep an open dialogue with the group and encourage everyone to share their opinions

Falls are not a normal part of ageing and they can be prevented Make Your Home Safer is just one of many ways to prevent falls

A hazard is any source of potential damage harm or negative health effects on something or someone Hazards can occur anywhere and include
- Loose rugs and mats- Poor lighting- Clutter- Garden tools left outside- Spills and wet floors
Sometimes the biggest hazards are in environments where people are most comfortable and familiar such as a persons home or backyard Risks or hazards in someones home environment are often overlooked because they are part of the furniture or have been there for a long amount of time However these can have an effect on the persons safety and can cause them to have a fall

A home modification is a change made to a persons home so they can continue to stay independent and live safely in their own home There are many changes that a person can easily make These changes can help a person feel more confident when moving in and around their home and help them stay strong and independent Homes are not always designed to meet peoples changing needs as they get older It is important to look at how home changes can assist people to adapt and overcome difficulties before they have a fall
If anyone isnt conf ident in ident ifying hazards t hey m ight need an in-hom e assessm ent
An in-home assessment is to help older adults maintain a safe environment to live in The assessor will work with the person to develop ways to reduce hazards and other risk factors that may increase a persons risk of having a fall It is best to talk to a GP if interested in having an in-home assessment
A home safety assessment includes
- Assessing commonly used areas in and around a persons home- Observing the person moving around their home environment- Assessing the health status and falls risk of a person

Family and friends Family and friends are a great source of help You might like to complete a Home Safety Checklist with them and make a plan to carry out any changes
General Practitioner (GP) A GP gives advice on what actions need to be taken to address health issues and refers them to other services
Occupational Therapist An OT can assess a home environment for potential hazards and can make modifications to make the home safer
Physiotherapist A physiotherapist can assess diagnose treat and work with clients to prevent disease and injury through physical means
Home care service providers
Home care service providers can give support to older adults who wish to live independently in their own home
Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT)
Teams of health professionals that assess an older adults physical mental medical healing cultural and social needs
The Independent Living Centre
Provides home modification services information and advice to support a persons safety in their home
Falls Specialist Service The falls specialist service works with older adults to help them reduce their risk of having a fall To access the service a GP referral is required

The Home Safety Checklist is a great way for older adults to make changes in their home to make their home safer Let the group know that they should take the Home Safety Checklist home and might like to complete it with a friend or family member and then work together to make the changes
Ask the group to split into pairs or small groups and discuss what actions they could take to make their home safer Make sure they each have a pen so they can fill in the list as they go Writing down actions can help provide motivation a sense of purpose and pride in accomplishment The actions should be simple and realistic
- Hand out the quiz
A quiz can be a great way to test peoples knowledge and see how much information has been absorbed Depending on time you can ask people to call the answers out or write them down on a notepad to review at the end You can use the accompanying Make Your Home Safer quiz or come up with your own
- Review the answers and discuss with group

You can also use the Make Your Home Safer education session guide (on page 8) to run a 45 minute education session The education session guide includes everything you need to ensure your participants have the knowledge and confidence to make their homes safer
There are a couple of things to consider when planning an event for older adults Tips include
- Making sure you have your speakers catering venue and other activities booked well in advance and confirm details with them a day or so before the event
- Consult older adults when planning your event they have great ideas and love to be involved in the planning
- Give detailed instructions to your guests on how to get to your event including public transport options and parking stations Be aware of emergency exits and disability access
- Consider partnering with other organisations to strengthen the event by sharing resources and expertise
- Make sure you enjoy the day Learning about making older adults homes safer and preventing falls should be a pleasant and rewarding experience

Ask the group to split into pairs or small groups and discuss what actions they could take to make their home safer Make sure they each have a pen so they can fill in the list as they go Writing down actions can help provide motivation a sense of purpose and pride in accomplishment The actions should be simple and realistic

Make Your Home Safer
The Make Your Home Safer campaign looks at the importance of making simple and often low cost changes both inside and outside of the house to help prevent slips trips and falls With around half of all falls happening in and around the home it is important for older adults to make their homes safer
The campaign
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of making your home safer as a strategy to reduce falls amongst older adults and encourage confidence in independent living
For health and community workers helping older adults to stay healthy and independent for longer the campaign offers information and services which describe simple and low cost changes to an older persons environment
The campaign is suitable for older adults who are already independent and wish to stay in their homes for as long as possible and older adults who may be less independent than they previously were and can benefit from making changes to regain their independence

Make Your Home Safer
The Make Your Home Safer campaign looks at the importance of making simple and often low cost changes both inside and outside of the house to help prevent slips trips and falls With around half of all falls happening in and around the home it is important for older adults to make their homes safer
The campaign
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of making your home safer as a strategy to reduce falls amongst older adults and encourage confidence in independent living
For health and community workers helping older adults to stay healthy and independent for longer the campaign offers information and services which describe simple and low cost changes to an older persons environment
The campaign is suitable for older adults who are already independent and wish to stay in their homes for as long as possible and older adults who may be less independent than they previously were and can benefit from making changes to regain their independence

Host a Make Your Home Safer event
Events for older adults should be fun interactive and engaging Whether it be community expo information day or a morning tea with a short presentation there are plenty of options
You can also use the Make Your Home Safer education session guide (on page 8) to run a 45 minute education session The education session guide includes everything you need to ensure your participants have the knowledge and confidence to make their homes safer
There are a couple of things to consider when planning an event for older adults Tips include
- Making sure you have your speakers catering venue and other activities booked well in advance and confirm details with them a day or so before the event
- Consult older adults when planning your event they have great ideas and love to be involved in the planning
- Give detailed instructions to your guests on how to get to your event including public transport options and parking stations Be aware of emergency exits and disability access
- Consider partnering with other organisations to strengthen the event by sharing resources and expertise
- Make sure you enjoy the day Learning about making older adults homes safer and preventing falls should be a pleasant and rewarding experience

- Put up flyers or your event posters in shopping centres libraries and senior centres- Share your event on social media and ask your followers to share it- Ask your local council to promote your event- Advertise in your local newspaper or radio station

A home modification is a change made to a persons home so they can continue to stay independent and live safely in their own home There are many changes that a person can easily make These changes can help a person feel more confident when moving in and around their home and help them stay strong and independent Homes are not always designed to meet peoples changing needs as they get older It is important to look at how home changes can assist people to adapt and overcome difficulties before they have a fall

An in-home assessment is to help older adults maintain a safe environment to live in The assessor will work with the person to develop ways to reduce hazards and other risk factors that may increase a persons risk of having a fall It is best to talk to a GP if interested in having an in-home assessment

Host a Make Your Home Safer event
Events for older adults should be fun interactive and engaging Whether it be community expo information day or a morning tea with a short presentation there are plenty of options
You can also use the Make Your Home Safer education session guide (on page 8) to run a 45 minute education session The education session guide includes everything you need to ensure your participants have the knowledge and confidence to make their homes safer
There are a couple of things to consider when planning an event for older adults Tips include
- Making sure you have your speakers catering venue and other activities booked well in advance and confirm details with them a day or so before the event
- Consult older adults when planning your event they have great ideas and love to be involved in the planning
- Give detailed instructions to your guests on how to get to your event including public transport options and parking stations Be aware of emergency exits and disability access
- Consider partnering with other organisations to strengthen the event by sharing resources and expertise
- Make sure you enjoy the day Learning about making older adults homes safer and preventing falls should be a pleasant and rewarding experience

Host a Make Your Home Safer event
Events for older adults should be fun interactive and engaging Whether it be community expo information day or a morning tea with a short presentation there are plenty of options
You can also use the Make Your Home Safer education session guide (on page 8) to run a 45 minute education session The education session guide includes everything you need to ensure your participants have the knowledge and confidence to make their homes safer
There are a couple of things to consider when planning an event for older adults Tips include
- Making sure you have your speakers catering venue and other activities booked well in advance and confirm details with them a day or so before the event
- Consult older adults when planning your event they have great ideas and love to be involved in the planning
- Give detailed instructions to your guests on how to get to your event including public transport options and parking stations Be aware of emergency exits and disability access
- Consider partnering with other organisations to strengthen the event by sharing resources and expertise
- Make sure you enjoy the day Learning about making older adults homes safer and preventing falls should be a pleasant and rewarding experience

Host a Make Your Home Safer event
Events for older adults should be fun interactive and engaging Whether it be community expo information day or a morning tea with a short presentation there are plenty of options
You can also use the Make Your Home Safer education session guide (on page 8) to run a 45 minute education session The education session guide includes everything you need to ensure your participants have the knowledge and confidence to make their homes safer
There are a couple of things to consider when planning an event for older adults Tips include
- Making sure you have your speakers catering venue and other activities booked well in advance and confirm details with them a day or so before the event
- Consult older adults when planning your event they have great ideas and love to be involved in the planning
- Give detailed instructions to your guests on how to get to your event including public transport options and parking stations Be aware of emergency exits and disability access
- Consider partnering with other organisations to strengthen the event by sharing resources and expertise
- Make sure you enjoy the day Learning about making older adults homes safer and preventing falls should be a pleasant and rewarding experience

Have Stay On Your Feet reg at tend your event
The team at Stay On Your Feetreg both staff and older adult volunteer peer educators are available to attend community events such as expos fairs and open days We are able to hold short presentations and set up and host display tables across Perth and with sufficient notice and availability in regional locations

Stay On Your Feetreg offers free Move Improve Remove Move Your Body Make Your Home Safer Check Your Medicines and Fuel Your Body presentations to community groups The 45 minute presentations take the group through simple tips that they can use to prevent slips trips and falls
Presentations are for people living independently in the community and are available in the Perth Metropolitan area If you are in a regional area you might like to download one of our education session guides which take you through the steps of planning a presentation you can deliver for your group or organisation Click here to book or call 1300 30 35 40
