1. OBSERVATIONSOne day, it was raining and very windy outside. I was wondering if a tornado was to be created by wind, can we possibly spin a bottle of water to create the same thing?

2. QUESTIONSo I wonder what would be the duration of a

tornado?o I wonder what would be the size of the tornado?o I wonder if the tornado forms correctly?o How would the tornado be formed?

3. HYPOTHESIS• I predict that the duration of tornado is

depending on the time you shake the bottle.• I estimate that the size depends on the size of

the bottle and the quantity of materials you put in because it can’t be too big if the bottle is small.

• I think the formation of the tornado will be quite realistic but it will be circular as it is spinning in the bottle.

• In my opinion the tornado will be formed by the material you put in.

4. METHOD/PROCEDUREYou will need: Water A clear plastic or glass bottle(that wouldn’t leak) Glitter(to see the tornado clearly) Dish washing liquidMethod:1. Fill the plastic bottle with water until it reaches

around three quarters full.2. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid.3. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter.4. Put the cap on tightly.5. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it by the

neck. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds, stop and look inside to see if you can see a mini tornado forming in the water. You might need to try it a few times before you get it working properly.

EXPERIMENT In trials I investigated how the

tornado was constructed step by step. Trial 1,2&3 worked out well with the

tornado forming good shape as I expected.

The most successful was trial number 3 as it lasted the longest and formed the best shape of the 3.

All the trials worked but I had to double check to see if I have done the right thing.

As it progressed I took photos of the steps that I took in order to get the final result( Photos on the left).

RESULTS• Talking about the results is fascinating. In my

opinion by spinning the bottle in a circular motion it creates water vortex that looks like a mini tornado.

• To support that, the water is rapidly spinning around the center of the vortex due to the force.

CONCLUSION Therefore, I can say from all my trials that

spinning water will form water vortex and the faster the water spins the more realistic it will look.

In addition, it has proven that water vortex can look and have the look of a tornado spinning around.
