New Third Grade Teacher, Apryl Maloon Apryl Maloon joined the Miramonte faculty this past summer, from Scottsdale, Arizona, where she established a special ed program at the elementary school and was the Special Ed Teacher as well. She has taught for 13 years - all in our SDA schools in Virginia, New York, Arizona, and now Miramonte. She earned her B.S. degree from A.U.C. and her M.Ed. in Special Ed from University of Phoenix. In Virginia, she became the conference lead teacher in the new reading series and trained teachers from several conferences how to implement the reading curriculum. Mrs. Maloon has other skills and talents as well. Prior to teaching, she was an R.N. for a number of years, has been a piano teacher, and has produced four albums of Christian music, which she composed and performed herself. (She was featured on 3ABN, and one of her albums was played on Family Life Radio.) Mrs. Maloon shared that everyone should be encouraged to keep trying new things, even if mistakes are made. Learning is the sum of trying. Everyone we come in contact with is both teacher and student; we all learn from each other. Mrs. Maloon’s classroom espouses John3:16, that Jesus’s sacriXice gives us value. Nothing we can accomplish can add to this, and nothing can take away from the value each has through Jesus. Mrs. Elliott’s Miramonte Archive Quiz Last month: Who’s the famous comedian/actor who paid for a child to attend Miramonte around the year 2000? Answer: Robin Williams. New Question: Which alumni of Miramonte became famous as an adult for his audio contribution to the movie industry? The Principal’s Window Teaching children to stand up for what they believe. I am more and more convinced this may be one of the most critical parts of Christian education, and certainly Adventist education. With the Olweus program, we teach children to stand up against bullying. With Red Ribbon Week, we encourage our young people to stand up and say No to drugs or alcohol. To do the right thing when no one else does, to share Jesus with others, to respond like Jesus would when those around you are mean or critical - if a child learns to Live their Beliefs like these, then we’ve passed our Christian legacy to the next generation. Zev was baptized by Pastor Dan Botabara of the San Jose Filipino SDA Church on September 26. As they attended the evangelistic series, her mother asked if she was interested in being baptized, and Zev said yes. She studied with Pastor Dan and learned about the Ten Commandments and Jesus. Zev said that her baptism “was kind of fun.” She feels better now that she has been cleansed from sin and is happy to be with Jesus. She knows that Jesus loves her. All of Devan Howell’s life, his mother took him to church. He learned many of the Bible stories, but he did not know Jesus that much. When he started attending Miramonte three years ago, school helped him a lot spiritually, because “we pray every morning, lunch-time, and afternoon.” Devan mentioned the morning devotion and learning memory verses in school as a big help, too. “My teacher is really funny and can be serious at times, and helps me learn about the Bible and God.” When he joined the Mountain View Central Church and its PathXinder Club, he was brought closer to God; the club leaders encouraged the children to listen to the sermon. Devan took this to heart and started focusing on the sermons, which, he said, has helped him get closer to Jesus. He also faithfully reads his Bible each morning and evening. I was baptized because I wanted to let Jesus in my heart so I can live with Him in heaven. Also I can do certain stuff, like be a deacon, but mainly I want to let God in my heart.” FALL FESTIVAL - Sunday 10/18, 12 - 3 PM; All are Invited!
