APRIL BRING SHOWERS, FLOWERS AND WARMTH!

Wow, what a surprise we had in March. It must have started out like a lamb as it sure went out like a lion with our cool temperatures. It isn’t often that we escape cool weather during the winter season, but it seldom comes in during March. By the time you read this you may have already forgotten about the burr weather in March. Hope you enjoyed some of the events the hardworking Unit 2 residents presented this past month (i.e. another great Pancake Breakfast on the 4th, Wacky Western fun on the 11th, St. Patrick’s Dinner on the 18th – yummy, and Super Bingo on the 25th). What a month! We have a lot to make us proud. Some say Unit 2 has the best

activities! Just want to remind you that these activities are for your pleasure. Hope you came out to support your Unit and had a little fun. You know, you are always welcome to volunteer your time to help with these events. Our Social, Men’s, Women’s and Single Ladies Clubs always put on a nice program. This month we are looking forward to our Annual Pork Chop Dinner compliments of our Women’s Club with Gerrie Curry at the helm. Don’t miss out on these wonderful activities. You’ll be missing out if you do. Lonely is not fun and there is no reason to be with so many fun things to do. Enjoy this new month and Happy Easter!

GAIL ARSENAULT, PRESIDENT

All residents of Unit 2 are members of the Social Club. Don’t miss all of the fun events scheduled for each month – come and join us. The refurbishing of our pool is almost finished....The last of the chaise lounges were picked up and will be refinished with new straps. Thanks to all who worked hard to raise the money to do all this especially our “Two Gals from Brooklyn”, Ann Marie and Marianne, who cooked those two wonderful Italian meals and Jim Schimpf, who sold lots of chances for his lottery and bought two owls protecting the pool from those messy birds and ducks. Now, if everyone obeys the pool rules and tells their guests to shower and cover the lounges with their towels, our new chairs will stay looking new.

Faith Burgeson, President, HOA Board

In early February, the property at 9534 – 42nd Way was sold to a company that refurbishes homes and

resells them. This home was purchased by Jason Hebert through Michael Valerio of Pinellas Equities LLC. Here’s a home that has seen better days and from the sound of it, will once again enjoy good days after getting all spruced up for a new resident.

Roberta Foley purchased the Tremblay home at 9703 – 41st Street N. She is moving from New England and is looking forward to joining our ‘family’.

The Tremblay’s have sold to Roberta and purchased the home at 4145 - 96th Terrace N which is still in Unit 2.

It is important that we get to know those that have moved into our neighborhoods. If you haven’t had an opportunity to visit the new folks, please make the time to do that. *********************************************************************** If you haven’t been enjoying the shows at the Pinellas Park Performing Arts Center, you might want to look it up to see what’s going on there. Tribute Artists are being featured. The headliner is obviously not the ‘real’ artist, but the groups that perform are great. Really brings back memories and puts the bounce back in your step. In April, they are hosting ELTON JOHN TRIBUTE, April 8th. The price is $ 15 advance and $ 20 at the door. The Box Office is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., and located at Park Station, 5851 Park Boulevard, Pinellas Park. The Box Office opens at least 60 minutes prior to our concerts. See you there!

Ted retired from the National Cash Registers Company in the early eighties and moved to Florida with his wife. They bought a home in the Lakes (next to Mainlands). His neighbor was a member of the Mainland Golf Course, she asked him to play in the Saturday Morning Scramble (which he did) and got to know people from Mainlands. In 2005 his wife passed away and he moved to Tennessee. After a winter in Tennessee, he decided to come back to Florida to reside in the winter. He stopped into the golf course to say hello to an old friend, Lola, but she was not there. He did leave his phone number for her to call him. Some weeks passed and Lola called. They talked for a bit and she said she got his message – lucky for Ted, Lola was unattached. Lola asked Ted if he would go to a Christmas party with her. It didn’t take long for Ted to say yes. After a few meetings, things went very well and they began a steady relationship. Ted moved into unit 5 with her. As time passed, other circumstances moved them to Unit 2. They loved it and said “Unit 2 is so busy and friendly almost like a family”. Ted and Lola have now been together over 9 years plus and are still as happy as that first date in 2005. Ted still thanks Lola for asking him out!! Ted not only volunteers for the Men’s’ Club, but has had starring roles in the Charity Party and who can forget his Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash roles in the Wacky Western. Lola is in charge of BUNCO, volunteers for the Women’s Club and also has had a starring role as the Wooden Soldier in the Charity Show and as a Line Dancer in the Wacky Western. Ted has a son and daughter who live in Tennessee and Lola has two sons that live close by in Palm Harbor and Tampa. Ted and Lola really enjoy traveling and can’t wait to go on their next adventure. *******************************************************************************************

“POP-TOPS”

You know, those aluminum things that you twist-off of the soda/beer cans. You may have been to a Unit 2 activity where it was announced that we would like you to save your “POP-TOPS”. Well, I thought it would be a good idea if you knew what we did with those “POP-TOPS”. When the “POP-TOPS” are gathered, we save them until we have the opportunity to send them up to Northern Wisconsin to a church that turns them in to be recycled. The funds from this are donated to the Ronald McDonald House. This organization houses families of children that need to be hospitalized for a variety of reasons. This allows many families a place to stay that many would not be able to afford while a child is undergoing surgery or some other procedure that requires hospitalization. Since we have been asking for these “POP-TOPS”, many have started to save them at home bringing in jars, cans and plastic bags full. What a great community! Many thanks for your generosity toward a great cause.

KAFFEE KLATCH

We need volunteers for serving behind the counter and cleaning up after. Please sign up on the bulletin board. This is an important part of Kaffee Klatch and I hope that we will see more names on the signup sheet for the coming months. If you plan to sponsor a Kaffee Klatch for a special event, please notify Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044 as far in advance as possible so that he can be prepared.

CRIME PATROL FOR UNIT 2 Have you ever noticed the flashing lights coming by your home at dark? No, not the ambulances, but the dedicated volunteers that take the time to drive around at night to check on your property. The crime patrol needs more volunteers. Wouldn’t you like to volunteer? You only have to look and listen – if you see something suspicious – call Pinellas Park Police (727) 541-0758. If you are interested, call Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044. Please help to keep our Unit 2 safe.

FROM YOUR BOARD

We are undertaking a major sidewalk and curb replacement project this year. Since 2014, we will have spent approximately $87,000 making these repairs. On any typical day, it is not uncommon to see at least half dozen vehicles illegally parked on the sidewalks. At present, the funds that we put in reserve for sidewalk replacement is far from adequate. If we do not take necessary action to curb this practice, we may need to raise the monthly maintenance fees to keep up with repairs. We are now taking aggressive action in telling the offenders to please respect our property. Do not park on grass and sidewalks signs have been recently installed at the primary entrances to our unit. We are ticketing these offenders and placing a copy of the citation in the home owners file. We have the legal right to have these vehicles towed from the property and we intend to exercise this if it becomes necessary.

CLUBHOUSE RESERVATIONS – All Unit 2 Home Owners that wish to book the Clubhouse for an event – must first contact Jill Spanheimer at (727) 422-5912 for approval on the date. There are many Unit 2 and private events planned throughout the year. Jill will enter the date and time of your event to avoid any scheduling conflicts.

ALL RESIDENTS MUST FILL OUT THE

AFFIDAVIT FORM FAIR HOUSING LAWS CENSUS 2017

Along with the Town Crier this month all residents will receive the Fair Housing Laws Census for 2017 form. Every two years it is required by law to fill out an affidavit stating that there is at least one member of the household that is at least 55 years old. This must be filled out to continue our status as a fifty-five and older community. Those of you that are computer savvy can click on the link below to read the rules and regulations concerning our community.

Please return the completed form by April 30th to Sally Kruse, Secretary at 4080 Mainlands Blvd. N. Pinellas Park, FL 33782. Any questions call Sally at (727) 577-7996.

https://www.hud.gov/offices/fheo/library/hopa_final.pdf

On the issue of age verification, commenters had several diverse suggestions. Several commenters urged that only the individual resident should be able to attest to his or her age and that anyone not cooperating with the survey should be considered to be not 55 years or older. It is HUD’s position that the test is whether 80% of the occupied units are, in fact, occupied by persons 55 years or older. This need only be documented through reliable survey, census or affidavit, or other documentation, a copy of which should be retained for recordkeeping purposes, and which confirms that the 80% threshold is being met. A self-certification of his or her age by an individual will be adequate to meet this standard. An affidavit from someone who knows the age of the occupant(s) and states his/her basis for the knowledge is sufficiently reliable to satisfy the statute. To hold otherwise would effectively allow 21% of a senior community to destroy the exemption by not cooperating with verification procedures.
