Bishops issue joint statement on refugee crisis
As the true scale of the
refugee crisis began to
unfold last month a joint
statement was issued by the Rt
Revd Paul Williams, Bishop of
Southwell and Nottingham, and
the Rt Revd Patrick McKinney,
Catholic Bishop of Nottingham.
In the statement they said:
“As Bishops, and together with
leaders of Christian Churches and
other faiths in Nottinghamshire,
we encourage the people of our
city and county to stand in
solidarity with all those who are
seeking refuge from countries
torn apart by conflict, and to offer
them a warm welcome.
For Christians, a vital part of our
faith is offering compassion to
those who are in need and
recognising the fundamental
dignity of every human being.
Christians are not just asked to
pray for others, but to be
generous in giving to support and
welcome those who are in need.
In a statement on the refugee
crisis facing Europe and the
Middle East, the Archbishop of
Canterbury said: ‘We need a
holistic response to this crisis that
meets immediate humanitarian
need while tackling its underlying
drivers.’ For some, that will mean
following Pope Francis’
suggestion of welcoming
refugees to their homes. For
others, it will mean responding
positively to appeals, at a
national, regional and local level,
for money and clothing to give to
those who have nothing.
We hope that people will be
creative in working together
across the whole community to
do whatever they can to help the
refugees who have suffered so
much. Many churches have
already taken up the opportunity
to respond in practical and
creative ways.

Bishop joins prayer walk on a
day of unity
Prayers, worship, a walk in the countryside, and a good lunch – it
was a day to savour when Bishop Paul Williams joined a prayer
walk in the north of the diocese.
The theme for the day was ‘One Church’ and the walkers visited
every church in the River Idle Benefice, which was created just a year
ago. It consists of five communities working together: Bawtry,
Austerfield, Misson, Everton and Mattersey.
Bishop Paul met the Revd Jonathan Strickland and parishioners at the
church in Misson, where they took part in a service of communion
before setting off on foot for the church in Austerfield, pausing along
the way to pray.
After a time of reflection and prayer the group headed for Bawtry for
a family service led by the Revd Jonathan Strickland; Bishop Paul
preached on John 17:20-23.
After lunch at Bawtry the group visited Everton, where a lay reader
led a short service, and finally arrived at Mattersey at around 4pm for
a celebration of Holy Communion, the Revd Strickland leading the
service and Bishop Paul preaching.
“It was a fantastic day,” said the Revd Strickland. “We walked and
stopped to pray and in every church in the benefice we had prayer and
worship.
“We are one church meeting in five locations and I am trying to
encourage the congregation to think like that; together we can do
things which we cannot do separately.”
A similar event was held last year to mark the creation of the benefice
and the beginning of the churches working together.
The new Safeguarding Adviser
for Southwell & Nottingham
brings a wealth of experience to
the role having worked in
schools and churches and as a
social worker and counsellor for
children and adults.
Donna Bernard-Carlin will be
involved in all aspects of
Safeguarding as the diocese
works to ensure the safety of
children, young people, and
adults at risk, in its churches.
Born and bred in Nottingham,
Donna moved to London to
study European Business
Administration, and then worked
in personnel. She realised this
was not for her and after a spell
of voluntary work trained as a
social worker. It was around this
time that she got married and
now has four children.
Donna and her husband attended
the South-West London
Vineyard Church and in 1996
they moved to Nottingham as
part of a group that planted Trent
Vineyard, now a large church
based in Lenton Lane,
Nottingham.
She worked for the church as its
safeguarding co-ordinator,
training staff and volunteers,
drawing up risk assessments,
advising when concerns were
raised, and liaising with outside
agencies.

Samantha welcomed to Jubilee
House
Jubilee House welcomes
Samantha Dennis, who took
over from Liz Youngman on
1st September, as Deputy Director
of Education (Schools).
Samantha, who is 48, lives in Long
Eaton and attends All Saints
Church, Sawley; a church she has
been involved with since
childhood. “My parents took me to
Sunday School and I’ve been there
ever since, apart from about a year
when I lived in Worcester,” says
Samantha.
Her last role was Head Teacher at Newton Regis Primary School in
Warwickshire for three and a half years, during which time she
commuted from Long Eaton, unbelievably a journey of just half an
hour!
Samantha and husband Phil, who is a butcher, have three daughters:
Vicky, Kathryn and Gabriella, and two rescue dogs, Meg and Pip.
When she’s not working, involved in family life, or leading services
at All Saints, Samantha enjoys reading.

As a nation, we cannot and
should not turn our backs on the
needs of so many people,
whoever they are and wherever
they are from. This country has a
proud history of offering
hospitality and aid to those who
are in need. Our Churches will
play their full part in calling
upon the Government and local
authorities to do as much as
possible to welcome refugees to
this country, and to work with
them to support in practical
ways those who settle here.”
Bishop Paul also joined
hundreds of people who
gathered for a vigil in Old
Market Square, Nottingham, to
show their support for the
thousands of refugees fleeing
violence and persecution.
Many held signs saying
‘refugees are welcome’ and
applauded as several speakers
said that Britain must play its
part and accept more refugees.
Bishop Paul said it was a
fundamental part of the
Christian faith to be
compassionate and to help those
in need. He said people of faith
would stand together to
welcome and help refugees who
came to Nottinghamshire.
The vigil was held on the day
that Prime Minister David
Cameron announced that the UK
would accept 20,000 extra
refugees over five years.

people who are struggling with
it.

Vacancy for a Diocesan Secretary
at Mothers’ Union
There are currently 3
vacancies on the
Nottingham City SACRE .
The SACRE (Standing Advisory
Council for Religious Education)
is a statutory body established to
support and promote Religious
Education across local
authorities.
The Nottingham SACRE meets
twice a year to discuss issues
relating to the teaching of RE in
primary and secondary schools
across the city. It is also the
responsibility of the SACRE to
ensure that there is a locally
agreed syllabus for the teaching
of RE. In Nottingham this has
just been done and is to be
implemented in schools this term.
This is a wonderful opportunity
to work with people of faith from
a range of traditions as there are
representatives from amongst
others the Hindu, Sikh, Jewish
and Muslim communities. Those
who represent the Anglican
church form one of the largest
representational groups on the
SACRE.

The Revd Canon KathrynHerrod, Team Rector ofHucknall writes:
In 2012 I had the privilege of
being part of the first Diocesan
group to visit Burundi and came
back a changed person. This
wonderful country with its
wonderful people has suffered so
much. And yet the people are
characterised by resilience, hope
and faith in the God they serve
and who they feel travels with
them every step of their journey
of life.
One man’s story: Pastor Thierry
is a man with a big belly laugh
who reminded me of Lenny
Henry. When asked about the
war, he grew serious and told me
how he had watched his father
and brothers killed before his
eyes. Knowing that he was next,
he fled to Tanzania where he
remained for several years before
returning to rebuild his life and
work in the church. Beginning
with a congregation of less than
50, we saw him in the process of
rebuilding a new church that
would hold 2,000, because the
present building could no longer
accommodate his congregation of
600. He told me he still sees the
people who killed his family
because they still live in the
village and I asked him how he
felt about that. His challenging
reply has stayed with me. He
spoke of forgiveness, of drawing
a line under everything and
staring again. How often do we
get bogged down with petty
squabbles in the church?.... One
man’s story, but so many others
like him.
Our commitment to these people
has grown. Building on an
existing link, we are supporting
the Baho project in Mutanga
Nord, in the capital city
Bujumbura. Baho means ‘life’
and aims to give life back to
some of the poorest families in
the community. The project
works with vulnerable children
and their families, providing
school fees and materials and
working with parents to teach
needlework, basketry and
providing chickens and pigs to
help them help themselves. Some
children are orphans, HIV
positive or have disabled parents.
The aim, and indeed expectation,
of the Baho project is ‘100%
success’. With support and help
these people can regain their
lives. In return, the children of the
project make us 200 palm crosses
each year.
At Hucknall, we celebrate an
annual ‘Burundi Sunday’.
Encouraging people to dress in
the colours of the Burundi flag,
services with teaching about
Burundi, and worship
characterised by African style
songs, even dancing in the aisles
(something we never see on a
normal Sunday!) are followed by
a Burundi lunch consisting of
four types of Burundian stew and
rice followed by fresh fruit. Craft
and games are provided for and
by the children. We are all
encouraged to contribute.
Where is your mission beyond...?
