Thy Kingdom Come is a
global prayer movement
which invites Christians
around the world to pray between
Ascension and Pentecost for more
people to come to know Jesus
Christ.
What started out as an invitation
from the Archbishops of
Canterbury and York in 2016 to
the Church has grown into an
international and ecumenical call
to prayer.
Last year over 200 churches and
schools across the diocese took
part, praying in churches, pubs,
country parks and schools. It is
hoped that many churches will
take part again this year, joining
Christians around the world in
prayer from May 10th to May
20th.
The aim of TKC is that:
• People will commit to pray with
God’s world-wide family - as a
church, individually or as a
family;
• Churches will hold
events, such as 24-7 prayer,
prayer stations and prayer
walks, across the UK and in
other parts of the world;
• People will be empowered
through prayer by the Holy Spirit,
finding new confidence to be
witnesses for Jesus Christ.
Please do register your TKC
events as a deanery, parish or
school by going to
https://tinyurl.com/y9e8rw72
Individuals, families and
churches are being encouraged to
sign up to Pledge2Pray on the
TKC website -
www.thykingdomcome.global
The information supplied will
then be used to plot prayer events
on a map of the world. There is
also a range of prayer resources
on the site.
You can also watch a video of the
Archbishop of Canterbury talking
about the power of prayer at

come from events held last year
in Southwell & Nottingham.

With one book just
published and another
coming out next
month, the Revd Mina Munns,
curate at Selston & Westwood, is
even busier than usual.
About six years ago, when she
was Children’s Ministry worker
at St Nic’s, Nottingham, Mina
started writing a popular
children’s ministry blog:
flamecreativekids.blogspot.co.uk
“From the blog I was approached
to write two books, “ says Mina.
“The first I co-wrote with vicar
and author Miranda Threlfall-
Holmes to help children aged 7-
12 to pray at home, and as a
useful tool for parents. It’s
published on May 17th and is
called the ‘Prayer Experiment
Notebook.’
For her other book – published by
Kevin Mayhew on March 23rd -
she was given carte blanche
regarding the subject.
“I proposed a book for the under
fives – who are a bit of a
forgotten group in the church - to
help them to engage in the story
of Holy Communion through
play,” said Mina.
‘We all Share’ includes case
studies from around the UK,
looking at what different
denominations are doing and how
parents can engag.’
“Both books are hands-on
creative approaches. I feel my
ministry is to encourage adults
within the Church to see children
as disciples in their own right,
and give them both inspiration
and tools to grow together.”

Later this year the diocese is preparing to launch its School of
Discipleship under the leadership of the Revd Dr David
Emerton. The School will exist ‘to grow disciples who grow
disciples’, helping both to realize the wider diocesan vision for
Growing Disciples wider, younger and deeper and to assist in
releasing the local church to continue growing towards complete
maturity in Christ.
To this end, and beginning in September 2018, the School of
Discipleship will be offering a diocesan-wide discipleship course
called Real LIFE, designed to envision, empower and equip God’s
people in making the life-long journey of following-after Christ.
David says: “The summons to follow-after Jesus and into real life lies
at the heart of what it is to be a disciple. To respond to this summons
and to make this journey is a life-long and exhilarating process
possible only in and through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Discovering what this summons means and how this journey is
marked is central therefore to the identity of both the School of
Discipleship and the Real LIFE discipleship course. If we are people
who seek to live and move and have our being such that we are
captivated and compelled by Jesus, and by Jesus alone, then the Real
LIFE discipleship course is perhaps for us.”
To find out more about Real LIFE and what the course will entail,
join David Emerton and Richard Kellett, Director of Discipleship &
Ministry, at ‘A Discipled Life’ – an evening designed to give you a
feel for what Real LIFE looks like, hosted in four locations across the
diocese:
St Peter’s Ravenshead NG15 9FD | Monday 21 May 2018
St Nic’s Nottingham NG1 6AE | Wednesday 23 May 2018
Christ Church, Worksop S81 0XS | Tuesday 5 June 2018
St Leonards, Newark NG24 2DP | Thursday 14 June 2018
These taster evenings are open to all and will start at 7:30pm and
finish by 9:30pm.
It would help our planning to know that you are intending to come to
one of these evenings – please send an email to

Workplace Sunday – 6th
May – will be an
opportunity to
celebrate God’s gift of work and
to support working people by
recognising work as worship.
It is an opportunity to encourage
workers to make a difference
where they are throughout the
week, recognising daily work as a
vital part of God’s big mission.
Churches are encouraged to mark
this significant day, and a range
of resources have been provided
to help them.

Bishop Paul wrote :
“I am delighted to commend
these excellent resources to you
in advance of Workplace Sunday.
The workplace is the frontline of
mission for many of our church
members who live out their
Christian faith in this context
week by week. It is vitally
important that we prayerfully
support and uphold them in their
witness as part of our
commitment to sharing the good
news and making new disciples.”
Many of the resources offer a
different twist on one element of
a normal service, whether it’s
work-focused prayers,
confessions and commissions or
suggestions for sermons and song
choices. However, there are also
some new ideas, like doing a
‘This time tomorrow’ slot –
talking to different people in your
congregation about where they
will be on Monday morning, who
they talk to and what kind of
situations they face.

Twelve clergy and lay
stipendiary leaders are to
take part in an ‘immersion’
retreat in the West Bank during
October. The retreat is being
conducted by the Revd Dr Fadi
Diab, Rector of St Andrew’s
Episcopal Church, Ramallah and
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church,
Birzeit. Fr Fadi last made a
working visit to the diocese in
October with five ambassadors
from the Diocese of Jerusalem as
part of the partnership between
the Diocese of Jerusalem and the
Diocese of Southwell and
Nottingham.
As the title of the retreat implies
Fr Fadi is keen to expose visiting
clergy to the setting in which his
Palestinian colleagues find
themselves in the occupied
territories. As the Diocese of
Southwell and Nottingham is the
only diocese in the UK in
partnership with the Diocese of
Jerusalem, Fr Fadi would like our
clergy to explore Palestinian
Christian congregations’
difficulties in the context of
injustice and their own
spirituality. As well as visiting
the main Christian sites, museums
and cultural centres in Jerusalem,
Bethlehem and Nazareth clergy
will visit and hold conversations
with Anglican priests and their
congregations in Jerusalem,
Nablus, Ramallah, Zababdeh,
Bethlehem and Nablus. They will
hear of members experiences in
relation to both lay and clergy
ministry in a background of
conflict. Clergy will learn about
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as
witnessed by local organisations
engaged in advocacy.
The retreat is being centred on St.
Andrew’s Guest House in
Ramallah. It is being largely
funded by the diocesan Retreat
and CMD budgets with a
contribution from the Holy Lands
Partnership Group budget.
Dean’s visit
The Rt Revd Hosam Naoum
(Dean of St. George’s
Cathedral, Jerusalem),
paid a 48 hr visit to
Southwell as a guest
of Dean Nicola
Sullivan in March.
He was able to
renew his
friendships and
re-invigorate the
partnership between
the cathedrals, meeting with
members of the Southwell
Minster Partnership Group with
St. George’s Cathedral.

The Younger Leadership
College’s ‘Leadership in
Lent’ programme came to
its climax at our Commissioning
Event held at the Archsbishop’s
Palace in Southwell on 28 March,
drawing together 90 Sixth Form
leaders from three of our
Diocesan secondary schools. The
programme has run weekly
throughout Lent, involving
teaching sessions from Bishop
Paul and the YLC Team, focusing
on key areas of leadership
development – Defining Reality,
Creating Vision, Building Teams
and Sustaining Momentum. The
students from Magnus Academy
in Newark, National Academy in
Hucknall and Samworth Church
Academy in Mansfield have
undertaken a range of leadership
tasks leading to the award of the
Bishop’s Leadership Certificate.
During the Commissioning
Event, we heard from Bishop
Paul, Alex Peace-Gadsby and
also a range of sixth form
students who shared their ‘picture
of the future that produces
passion’, drawing on Bill Hybels’
helpful definition of Vision. YLC
was also delighted to welcome all
the Principals from the academies
who shared their perspectives on
leadership and encouraged their
students in their development.
Andy Wolfe, Dean of Younger
Leadership College said, “We’ve
been thrilled with the way that
schools have responded to this
exciting and pioneering
programme and have been so
impressed with the students
we’ve worked with – to hear their
visions and passion for leadership
was so inspiring, and we look
forward to working with many
other schools on this programme
in the future.”

MINISTRY VACANCIES
May 2018
Southwell & Nottingham Diocese is a great place to be in ministry for mission! We specialise in creative and stimulating appointments, have generous churchgoers, some beautiful churches and our cathedral is a gem. It’s a varied and exciting area to live in, with excellent access to other parts of the UK. We take care of our church leaders with good quality housing and supportive deanery colleagues. Fresh stipendiary/non-stipendiary/retiring/part-time clergy and laity are welcome! Our current vacancies, divided by Archdeaconry are as follows:
NOTTINGHAM ARCHDEACONRY VACANCIES
Bestwood Rise Park, Emmanuel and St Mark – Vicar designate
The Bestwood area is undergoing pastoral reorganisation and when this is complete the newly formed 3-parish benefice of Bestwood Rise Park, Emmanuel and St Mark will have a vacancy for a full time incumbent. We are looking for a Spiritual Leader and Enabler in Mission for the three different worshipping communities to grow disciples of Jesus Christ in number, confidence in God, depth and younger age profile. It is an exciting opportunity to build on great community relationships, strong lay leadership and good co-operation with the churches of the wider Bestwood area. For informal discussion and further information, please contact Sarah Clark, Archdeacon of Nottingham, on 07917 693285 or email [email protected].
Burton Joyce, Bulcote and Stoke Bardolph, with Lowdham, Caythorpe and Gunthorpe - Vicar
There are outstanding opportunities for growth in a new benefice with two parish churches and four smaller worshipping communities, situated in these beautiful, vibrant, commuter/rural communities of the Trent Valley between Nottingham and Southwell. We are praying for someone of energy and vision to build on all that is good while releasing the untapped potential there is. We are looking for someone who:

Clifton Team Ministry - Team Vicar
Clifton is a significant parish of some 23,000 people on the outskirts of the City of Nottingham. It is situated on the excellent A453 which connects the City to the M1. The people of Clifton have their own sense of identity and are served by good shops, schools and public transport, including the new tram route into the City. Two churches serve the parish; St. Mary’s in the village and Holy Trinity with St. Francis in the estate. Clifton is a hard-pressed area with many joys and challenges and is a fulfilling place to serve. We are praying for someone who is:
An evangelist who will help us grow in number, making disciples and seeing new worshipping communities established
A Team player who has commitment to mission and is excited by discipleship
Has resilience
Able to celebrate and respect difference
A deep pastoral heart

We are seeking and praying for a missional Priest and Leader who will:

Porchester St James
St James, Porchester lies on the outskirts of Nottingham and is a warm and welcoming community. We are seeking a prayerful vicar who can help us to grow disciples, especially in areas of the parish and with age profiles (13-45-year olds) that we are not currently reaching. We have a desire to work collaboratively with neighbouring parishes to establish a new worshiping community in expanding housing developments on the northern boundary of the parish. We are also hoping that our new vicar will help our congregation to grow deeper in faith through preaching and teaching, and is able to nurture, motivate and affirm the gifts and contributions of others and encourage us to pray.
Closing date: 21 May 2018 / Interview: 26 June 2018

Skegby with Teversal
This is an exciting opportunity to minister in a diverse benefice. Each community has its own church ranging from the historic village of Teversal, the multiple purpose plant of Stanton Hill and the larger Skegby. The churches have engaged well with the Diocesan vision of growing disciples and there is a mature and gifted lay leadership in place. After years of a significant incumbent ministry, these churches are ready to move to the next level of realising their potential and would benefit from their next priest being someone who is excited by the prospect of working from a traditional base in ministry leading to pioneering new forms of mission and outreach.

West of Retford villages – Vicar designate
A new united benefice and united PCC is being created with a clear priority to grow disciples across the eight rural communities within the benefice. A significant feature for the vicar-designate will be engaging with the opportunities in three church schools (in Sutton-cum-Lound, Ranby and Gamston) and developing lay ministry. In addition there are exciting mission opportunities related to the heritage of the churches, in particular the preparation for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers in 2020.

During the First World War Britain needed millions of shells to fire on the Western Front. Many of those shells were manufactured around the country and delivered to a specially-built factory in Chilwell near Nottingham, where they were filled with explosives.
This was a highly dangerous operation. In the early evening on 1st July 1918 disaster struck. Eight tons of explosives detonated, tearing through the Mixing House and TNT Mill. It was one of Britain’s worst wartime civilian catastrophes, causing the biggest loss of life in a single explosion of the First World War. By the time the dust had settled, over 130 people lay dead. Another 250 were injured. Only 32 of those killed could be identified.
The remains of the unidentified bodies were buried in a mass grave in the churchyard at St Mary’s, Attenborough. The plots are marked by flagstones and a small granite memorial with a blue plaque. A more substantial memorial
stands on the site of the Mixing House, the epicentre of the explosion, but this is still MOD land – the Chetwynd Barracks – and so has limited public access.
On 1st July 2018 – a century after the tragedy – a new memorial will be dedicated at St Mary’s and, in the week before, a series of events will be held to commemorate the victims.
