Premier League Hockey Update by Paul Finnie Midweek fixtures continued this week, with a crucial battle in terms of the top four taking place between Seacliff, 5 points behind fourth placed Adelaide, and the Peas at the State Hockey Centre Tuesday night. Seacliff got off to a good start with in-form striker Dan Mitchell delivering perfect passes for Matt Baird to score twice, Adelaide clawing one back before the break through a well-constructed corner conversion to Jake Stacy. Despite some free-flowing hockey in the second half the only score came from a penalty stroke conversion for Seacliff to close the points gap with a 3-1 win. In the other men’s fixture, Uni scored a much needed 3-1 win against Grange Royals, Brad Fitzgerald converting twice. Adelaide’s girls set up the weekend’s big clash with the Magpies with a 3-0 win over Seacliff, whilst Uni’s Freya Byrne was the only scorer in the clash between the students and struggling Grange Royals. In the weekend’s ladies fixtures, Port Adelaide established a 6 point gap in 2nd from Adelaide with their 3-1 win over the Peas, watched by a large crowd at their Ethelton home ground as part of a very successful “Black and White” day for life members and sponsors, Carly Simms, Leah Welstead and Courtney Rudd all getting on the board. Burnside’s 3-1 win against Seacliff saw them maintain a 2 point lead at the top of the ladder from Port, Alex Fraser, Tess Reynolds and Eloise Sobels scoring singles each in an even team effort. In a dour struggle at Golden Grove, North East and Forestville drew 1-1, while it took a penalty corner conversion after the final whistle to earn Woodville full points in a hard-fought match with the luckless Grange Royals side, Katie Pisani scoring twice for the ladies from Pennington to keep them 4 points clear in 4th place. The men’s side of things saw a goal feast in a busy round for goalies, John Gibson and David Francis double scores for Woodville seeing them to a 6-4 win over fellow strugglers Grange Royals to complete the mens/ladies double, Cameron White scoring twice also for the Sea Eagles. Dan Mitchell’s hat trick and continued good form was decisive in Seacliff’s 5-3 triumph over Burnside, which combined with other results saw them move into 4th place ahead of Adelaide. Port took on Adelaide looking to continue their unbeaten run in front of a vocal home crowd, with the return of Daniel Cox from a knee injury buoying the visitors. Port scored early but the Peas took advantage of some poor defending from the Magpies to lead 3-2 in the second half, and had the momentum, hitting the post. David Reid in goals for Port saved a vital penalty stroke however and this signified a change in fortunes, Port completely taking over, scoring and creating chances freely to come out on top 6-3, Tom Fitzgerald, Ev Boland and Reid being among the best on-field. Andrew Searle, Craig Victory and Fraser Bowden each knocked in two goals.

Sunday’s fixture between North East and Forestville at Golden Grove promised to be match of the round, and whilst both sides squandered chances at different points of the match, there was no doubting the competitive nature of the match, with several green and 3 yellow cards being issued in the second half for poor tackles. It looked like an Ian Wishart-less North East, suffering a match-ending injury to Guy Bolton early, losing Will Telfer late to a hamstring strain and being reduced to nine men at one point, were going to weather the Forestville storm with the sides locked at 1-1. However, Forestville earnt a short corner at full time, and for the second time on the weekend a game was decided in this fashion, with Forestville converting from the short corner breakdown despite North East protestations of an offensive breach to score a rare win for visitors to Golden Grove over the last few years. Jamie Bahnisch was outstanding in the middle for the visitors, and Dalton Casey solid in defence for North East. The top of the table clash between Burnside and Port Adelaide (2pm Sunday at Port) is undoubtedly the match of the round in this coming week’s ladies fixtures, while clashes between Adelaide and North East, and Forestville versus Seacliff, take equal billing for the men’s fixtures. Forestville are hopeful also for the return of influential midfielder Joel Langley from injury for this clash.

Black and White Day 2012 A big thank you to all of those involved in making Black and White day a huge success in 2012. The junior committee did a fantastic job with the under 9s and we had many tasty contributions to the life members/sponsors afternoon tea by some our fantastic mum’s around the club.
