Premier League Hockey Update by Paul Finnie Saturday afternoon saw a western derby at Port Adelaide, with the Magpies taking on Grange Royals. In the men’s match, after a spirited start by the young Royals, Port regained composure without being at their best to take the points in a workmanlike if not spectacular 6-1 win, Cameron Joyce continuing his good goal-scoring touch with another hat trick. Port’s men had a relatively comfortable 5-0 win mid-week in a re-scheduled match v Uni also. The ladies match was hard-fought, with Port’s Brooke Appleyard scoring two goals in the Magpies 3-1 win to keep them atop the ladder (Appleyard’s day took a turn for the worse in an impromptu table tennis defeat with her doubles partner Port goalie Emma Faint in the clubrooms later on in the evening...).

Away to North East, the Woodville girls went 1-0 down early and were under immense pressure, before Katie Pisani scored the first of her two goals for the day to level proceedings. Woodville then showed why they are in the top four and came out on top with a dominant second half to win 4-1, captain Brook Bucheker also scoring twice. In the men North East ground out a 5-2 win against the same opponents to widen the gap between them and third, Rodney Thorpe scoring two, Woodville’s talented young gun Michael Boseley also scoring two. At Seacliff on Sunday, the Uni ladies notched a 4-3 win against the lady Tigers, Tahlia Ferguson scoring twice for the students. Seacliff coach Darren Neimke’s assessment of the men’s match is as follows: “A typically tight encounter between Seacliff and Adelaide Uni saw the Tigers come away with a well deserved 4-1 win yesterday at home. In an even first half which was played as a tough, man-on-man battle, Seacliff turned at the break with a 2-1 lead after early goals to Glyn Tamlin and Todd Kitto put them ahead. The Tigers, who were without regular defenders Lachy Seabrook and Tynan Cassidy, withstood a great deal of pressure from Adelaide Uni who were fast and well organised in their press. Glyn Tamlin, Brenton Carle, and Luke Hunter were all outstanding in their defensive efforts. The second half saw a more open style of play with the Seacliff midfield taking control of the flow of play with players such as Al Oliver, Dan Mitchell, Todd and Brad Kitto having important touches all over the ground. Two second half goals to Tim Stephenson sealed the deal for the Tigers who now move into clear fourth spot on the ladder. This week the Tigers take on Woodville at home in what looms as a danger game as we will be without our U21 state representatives who head to Tasmania for the National U21 Championships.” At Adelaide, a tight match between the home side’s ladies and Burnside finished at 2-2, in what became a spiteful affair towards the end of proceedings. The men’s match was basically a 6 point encounter for the protagonists, who are fighting for finals berths, and the first half reflected this, with both sides missing gilt-edged chances to score in what was in the main a cautious affair. A penalty corner at the end of the half saw Adelaide awarded a penalty stroke, which after consultation between umpires was overturned much to Adelaide’s disappointment. The second half was more open in play and chances created, but to both team’s credit not a solitary card, green/otherwise, was awarded, Burnside’s Simon Brown converting a short corner scrimmage in what proved the only score of the match to continue Burnside’s resurgence and narrow the gap between them and the top 4. Keagan English and Matt Claxton were influential for the Bulldogs. Foxtel London 2012 Broadcast Program
With just over one month to go until the LONDON 2012 Olympic Games commence, FOXTEL has released a complete television guide, including all broadcast times, listing what will be airing across its eight, dedicated LONDON 2012 channels. The guide can be viewed now on the FOXTEL LONDON 2012 website at www.foxtel.com.au/london2012, and will feature a day by day listing starting from the commencement of FOXTEL’s broadcast on July 25.
Grounds committee up and running A new grounds committee has recently been established. Rick Holliday will chair this committee with Pete Hanlon acting as Ground Manager. Mick Holmes Scruff and Dave Kirner are ordinary members and Jason Young is onboard as a specialist technical advisor. Safety Lines Yellow warning lines have been painted on raised concrete behind the technical bench. These signs are so people do not trip over. Thanks to Peter Hanlon for the great work. Player Bench Netting To contain deflections and protect spectators and canteen patrons a safety net has been installed around the home team bench. Thanks to Adam from Quins Marine for the fine job. A friendly reminder that all fees were due in full by 30 June 2012. If you are paying your fees in 3 equal instalments, the second instalment is now overdue. If you have made a payment arrangement with the Treasurer please ensure you continue to make these payments. Failure to adhere to your payment arrangement could mean you are ineligible to play. Payment can be made by EFT, credit card or cash. If Lib or Liza are not at the club, payment can be made at the bar.
Reminder for umpires & match officials
Please ensure matches are running on time according to the following rules-
Consequences of delay or interruption: 30.2 A maximum period of ten (10) minutes may be added for delays or interruptions but the match must conclude no later than five (5) minutes before the scheduled start time of the next match to be played on the same field. 30.3 If the start of a match is delayed then equal time must be deducted from each period of play such that the match will end no later than five (5) minutes before the scheduled start time of the next match to be played on the same field.
SAPSASA Hockey During the week 18/8 to 22/6 , 13 players participated in the 2012 State Hockey Carnival at Grange Reserve. These were Harley Woodward, Ethan Woodward, Tim Srilasak and Paul Aladesaye, Calum Wickman, Dylan Lawrence, Dylan Johnstone, Carter Holmes, Nathan Newble, Maison Rudd, Lee Tape, Cooper Silby and Harrison Abbott.

They represented Port Zone in Div 2 against 10 other teams from city and country. Harley, Calum and Dylan Lawrence all played last year when the team came second in this Division. This was Paul’s first time playing hockey, all other boys play for either Woodville Port or Grange. At the end of the week we had 3 draws and 7 losses, and were always competitive, against older and bigger. The weather was mostly wind and rainy all week, but a good time was had by all. Special thanks to Sue Davidson from Pennington Primary School for being team manager all week, and parents and supporters for coming out in such bleak weather. Thanks Sos and Ryan for being our umpires. And to the abovementioned boys, whose behaviors and attitudes were brilliant all week. They represented themselves, their clubs and their schools admirably. Junior Quiz Night
The Club will be having the annual Quiz Night on Saturday 28th July, starting at 7.00 PM. This is a major Junior Fundraising event and will enable us to provided extra equipment, facilities and opportunities for our young members. Last year’s very successful event was made possible by the efforts of our members. We are looking for all Club Members to assist again this year by seeking donations of goods to be used as prizes.

You will only need to use the book two or three times before 1 June 2013 to have recouped your $65 back, after that you are just SAVING dollars on things you would usually do anyway! PADHC Olympics
A fantastic effort by the PL/M1 Women, organising the Olympic theme night at the club last Saturday. A special mention must go to games master Kelsy Dyer who organised coin slide, egg and spoon races and pin the medal on the athlete. Medals were awarded on the fantastic podium provided by the Fechner clan. A great night and the first of many team organised functions for the year.
