When I first learned about The Hal Harries Musical Garden, I was at once honored by the Harries family’s generosity to provide a lead gift, inspired by the staff’s vision to further meet clients’ physical, spiritual and behavioral health needs and excited by the opportunity to help expand Magnolia’s holistic approach to serving people with developmental disabilities.

Your gift would reap so many benefits for our community, creating a space that fosters connections between our clients and their neighbors.

In the past couple of years, Magnolia has added three group homes and a Wellness Center. The Wellness Center signaled the beginning of a greater focus on clients’ mental and behavioral health needs. The Garden, in addition to other physical healthcare investments, will round out a new more holistic approach to addressing the needs of Magnolia’s clients.

Your involvement is so important as it helps meet the social, emotional and wellness needs of Magnolia’s clients. We cannot build this garden without you.

about HalHarold N. Harries, 1974 - 2015

Hal Harries was a client in Magnolia’s Supported Independent Living and Vocational/Day Habilitation programs. He faced significant communciation and mobility challenges; however, his direct care staff all remember his cheerful disposition and positive attitude.

Music was a source of great joy in his life and he particularly enjoyed the piano, tambourine and harmonica. The Hal Harries Musical Garden will honor Hal’s memory and a “Tree of Life” in the center of the garden will serve as a reminder of his happy spirit and his family’s commitment to honoring his memory and improving the lives of all his friends who remain at Magnolia.

Vocational Activities

The garden will represent an extension of our vocational horticulture program, offering opportunities for clients to learn and work. It will also provide additional community and workplace volunteer activities.

Recreation & Respite

The garden, located away from campus foot & vehicular traffic, will offer clients and their families a reserved, safe space for visiting, reflection, walking, reading and wellness classes focused on physical and mental health support such as yoga.

The musical instruments in the garden are tonally calibrated to offer soothing sounds and help meet our clients’ tactile, creative expression and physical activity needs.

Self-Soothing

A key component of our behavioral health offerings, the garden will offer a space for the client who needs fresh air, the sounds and sights of nature and the feel of sunshine to self-sooth and prevent behavioral health crises.

The Hal Harries Musical Garden features outdoor musical instruments created by Freenotes Harmony Park. The instruments will compliment the sounds of nature - birds chirping, the whistle of the wind, and leaves scraping the ground.

Pagoda Bells - Finding Your ZenNestled in the Japanese Magnolia Grove ,and reminiscent of the architecture of Asia, the cascading Pagoda Bells will provide beautiful lush tones of long duration. They are a calming addition to any outdoor setting.

Griffin - Finger Painting With SoundProducing rich, full tones, this aluminum resonated metallophone has anodized aluminum chimes. Warm tones linger for three to five seconds, making it similar to finger painting with sound.

Imbarimba - The Roots of Music The pentatonic Imbarimba features a unique musical design combining the elements of two traditional African instruments: the marimba and the kalimba. The low-pitch, resonating notes are arranged in the layout of the kalimba. This allows both hands equal access to the upper and lower notes. Coated fiberglass bars are entirely weatherproof and withstand hard use and the elements.

The garden will feature several groves of Magnolia trees, which pay homage not only to our name, but also our state flower. Anchored by a large live oak in the center of the property, the garden and will be accessible from the Newman Street side of campus and the main campus grounds.

Magnolias are associated with nobility, perseverance, dignity and a love of nature which complements Magnolia’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity of our clients and embracing the natural beauty of our 11 acre campus.

The Little Musical LibraryIn addition to large fixed outdoor musical instruments, we will provide clients with a music library of portable instruments such as rain sticks, small drums and cabasas to further support creative expression and tactile sensory activity.

The Magnolia TouchThe Magnolia Dream Factory artists will create birdhouses to attract the hummingbirds that visit Magnolia each spring.

The Dream Factory will also adorn benches with mosaic tile, and create special artwork for the garden. These touches will expose visitors to our clients’ talents and creativity.

SeatingAt times, Magnolia clients just want to sit in the shade and enjoy the day or converse with friends and family. A large outdoor seating area will feature benches arranged to encourage conversation and socialization.

Accessible & Environmentally FriendlyGarden elements are designed to accommodate all levels of mobility and to create a natural space similar to the Great Lawn facing River Road with its jasmine, magnolia and oak trees.

• Flexi-pave promenade - made of porous, ADA compliant and sustainable material composed of recycled tires. It filters rain water, improving groundwater quality, which is an added benefit due to our proximity to the Mississippi River.

• 6 ft. wide pathway - to accommodate clients and visitors who use mobility devices.

• Wide Newman Street entry gate - accessible street entry for neighbors.

• Variety and size of instruments - variable heights for maximum access and use regardless of mobility, stature, etc.
