MAGAZINE PROPOSAL

Page 2: Magazine proposal

GRIME AND URBAN ARTISTS

All of these covers capture the conventions of the genre. They represent the true grit of the lifestyles of the artists. They use music as a way to vent, for some of these artists music is a way out of the life they live. It is not very commercial music, their music isn’t very well circulated, but it captures the attention of many young people around England, where their music is mainly heard. Although they make music they still have life struggles whilst living in crime filled areas of London. Each cover gives an urban feel to the viewer, which is what I wish to achieve in my magazine.

I will include an image of a grime artist, with an urban look. There will be a brick wall as the background. He will have a calm but intimidating pose. A possibility that a dog would be used as a prop –Pitbull. I will use dark shaded colours throughout to represent the theme of the magazine. The artist will be dressed in a tracksuit and trainers in accordance with the urban look and feel that I want to give off. My artist will be a young African male, in the genre of grime there are a big amount of young Africans who make music and they mainly aim their music at young people of all descents but mainly African.

CONVENTIONS

I will use a Canon camera to take the pictures. With these images I will select some to use on my cover and in the contents page and double page spread. The double page spread will include a Q&A with the artist himself, leading up to the release of he’s new album. I will also include a story about the life of the artist, including his beginnings and how and when he started making music. On the contents page I will include information about what is inside the magazine, including other articles. There will be information about other grime artist and what is going on in the grime scene at the moment. For the location of the shoot, I will be outside and in order to give the magazine an urban feel I will have brick wall in the background, there could be graffitti.

SHOOTING INFORMATION

My front cover will be similar to the album cover to the right. This picture is taken from a mixtape that was recently released by an urban UK artist called nines. In this cover all the conventions that I wish to include are present. There are dark shaded colours and there is a small brick wall in the background which gives an urban feel that I want to achieve in my magazine. The dress code that I want to use is also included, the males in the picture are wearing tracksuits and are all posed calmly, however they still seem serious and intimidating. The placement of the hands in their tracksuit bottoms comes across as they are masculine. The whole ‘mise en scene’ of the cover is a representation of the music they produce. The music is very masculine.
