Road and traffic safety

Road and traffic safety have ab-solute priority. Only operate your carradio if the road and traffic conditionsallow you to do so. Familiarise your-self with the device before setting offon your journey.You should always be able to hearpolice, fire and ambulance sirensfrom afar. For this reason, set thevolume of whatever you are listen-ing to at a reasonable level.

Safety information

The car radio and the device'scontrol panel (flip-release panel) heatup during use. Therefore, when re-moving the flip-release panel, onlyhold it by its non-metallic surfaces.Allow the car radio to cool down firstif you want to uninstall the whole unit.

InstallationIf you want to install your car radio your-self, please read the installation andconnection instructions that follow theseoperating instructions.

AccessoriesOnly use accessories approved by Blau-punkt.

Remote controlsThe most important functions of your carradio can be accessed safely and con-veniently from the steering wheel usingthe remote controls RC 08, RC 10 orRC 10H (available as an optional ac-cessory).

The radio cannot be switched on/offusing the remote control.

AmplifierAll Blaupunkt amplifiers can be used.

Calibration microphoneYou can use the calibration microphone(available as an accessory) for theequalizer’s automatic sound calibrationfeature.

CD changerThe Blaupunkt CDC A08 CD changeris included with the Nevada DJ72 andArizona DJ73 units.

The following CD changers can be ob-tained from accessory retailers for con-nection to the Madrid C72 unit:CDC A02, CDC A 08, CDC A 072 andIDC A 09.

You can also connect the CDC A 071CD-changer by using an adapter cable(Blaupunkt no.: 7 607 889 093).

Compact Drive MP3As an alternative to a CD changer, youcan connect a Compact Drive MP3 toaccess MP3 music tracks. If you con-nect a Compact Drive MP3, you will firstneed to use a computer to store the MP3music tracks on the Microdrive(tm) harddisk inside the Compact Drive MP3.Then, when the Compact Drive MP3 isconnected to the car radio, you can playthe tracks like normal CD music tracks.The Compact Drive MP3 is operated inthe same way as a CD changer. Mostof the CD changer functions can alsobe used with the Compact Drive MP3.

NOTES AND ACCESSORIES

Removable control panel

Theft protectionAs a way of protecting your car radioagainst theft, the unit is equipped witha removable control panel (flip-releasepanel). Without this control panel, thecar radio is worthless to a thief.

Protect your equipment against theft bytaking the control panel with you everytime you leave your vehicle. Do notleave the control panel in your vehicle -not even in a hiding place.

The control panel has been designedto be easy to use.

Note: Never drop the control panel.

Never expose the control panel todirect sunlight or other heat sourc-es.

Store the control panel in the sup-plied case.

Avoid making direct skin contactwith the control panel’s contacts. Ifnecessary, clean the contacts witha lint-free cloth soaked in alcohol.

Press the button 2.

The control panel latch mechanismopens.

First, pull the control panel straightoff the unit and then out towardsthe left.

The unit switches off after the con-trol panel is removed.

All the current settings are saved.

Any cassette already inserted inthe unit remains there.

Attaching the control panel Slide the control panel from left to

right into the unit’s guide.

Press the left-hand edge of thecontrol panel into the unit until itclicks into place.

Note: When attaching the control panel,

make sure you do not press thedisplay.

If the unit was still switched on whenyou removed the control panel, the unitwill automatically switch on with the lastsettings activated (i.e. radio, cassette,CD changer/Compact Drive MP3 orAUX) when the panel is replaced.

THEFT PROTECTION

Switching on/offThere are various ways of switching theunit on/off.

Switching on/off using button1 To switch the unit on, press button

1 until you feel the latch open andthe button pushes out.

The unit switches on.

To switch the unit off, press button1 until you feel it click into place.

The unit switches off.

Switching on/off using thevehicle ignitionIf the device is correctly connected tothe vehicle’s ignition and the unit wasnot switched off using button 1, it willswitch on/off simultaneously with theignition.

You can switch the unit on even if theignition is off.

To do so, press button 1 so thatyou feel it unlatch and push out.

Note:To protect the vehicle battery, the unitwill switch off automatically after onehour if the ignition is off.

Adjusting the volumeThe volume can be adjusted in stagesfrom 0 (off) to 50 (maximum).

To increase the volume, turn thevolume control 1 to the right.

To decrease the volume, turn thevolume control 1 to the left.

Setting the power-on volumeYou can set the unit’s default power-onvolume.

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “VOL” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “ON” display item.

Set the required volume using thevolume control 1.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theMENU button 8 to close themenu.

The settings are saved.

Note:To avoid damage to your hearing, thepower-on volume is limited to a valueof “40”.

Activating muteThis feature allows you to instantane-ously reduce the volume (mute).

Press the AUDIO button 9 forlonger than two seconds

“MUTE” appears in the display.

Cancelling mute

Briefly press the AUDIO button 9.

or

turn the volume control 1.

Telephone audio / navigationaudioIf your car radio is connected to a mo-bile telephone or a navigation system,the unit’s volume will be muted as soonas you “pick up” the telephone or assoon as a navigation announcement ismade. The caller or voice output willthen be heard over the car radio loud-speakers. In order for this to work, themobile telephone or navigation systemmust be connected to the car radio inthe manner described in the installationinstructions.

You can find out from your Blaupunktdealer which navigation systems can beused with your car radio.

If a traffic information message is re-ceived during a telephone call or whilsta navigation announcement is beingmade, the traffic message will only beplayed after the call or voice output isfinished.

If, during a traffic announcement, a tel-ephone call arrives or the navigationsystem wants to output a spoken in-struction, the traffic announcement isinterrupted and the telephone call/voiceoutput can be heard.

You can set the volume level at whichtelephone calls and the navigation voiceoutput will first be heard.

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “VOL” display item.

Press the softkey 4 that is as-signed to the “TEL” display item forthe telephone volume or “NAVI”display item for the voice output.

Set the required volume using thevolume control 1.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theMENU button 8 to close themenu.

The settings are saved.

Note:You can also adjust the volume duringthe telephone call using the volume con-trol 1.

Automatic soundThis feature automatically adjusts thevolume of the car radio to suit the speedat which the vehicle is travelling. In or-der for this to work, your car radio mustbe connected in the manner describedin the installation instructions.

The automatic volume boost can be setto six levels (0-5). “0” means no boostand “5” means maximum boost.

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “VOL” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “AUTO” display item.

Set the boost level using the joy-stick 7.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theMENU button 8 to close themenu.

The settings are saved.

Note:The optimum setting for the speed-re-lated sound adjustment feature de-pends on how noise levels develop inyour particular vehicle. You will need totest various settings in order to find outwhich is best suited to your vehicle.

Note:You can adjust the bass, treble and X-BASS individually for each audiosource.

“AUDIO 1” appears in the display.

Move the joystick 7 up or right toboost the bass or move it down orleft to reduce the bass.

When you have finished making yourchanges,

X-BASSThe X-BASS feature can be used toaurally compensate the bass at low vol-ume levels. The X-BASS boost can beset in steps ranging from 0 (off) to 6(max). If X-BASS is activated, the con-figured X-BASS boost level will be dis-play alongside the X-BASS symbol inthe display.

Press the AUDIO button 9.

“AUDIO 1” appears in the display.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “X-BASS” display item.

Move the joystick 7 up or right toboost the X-BASS or move it downor left to reduce the X-BASS.

When you have finished making yourchanges,

press the joystick OK 7 or theAUDIO button 9.

Adjusting the right/left volumedistribution (balance) To adjust the balance, press the

AUDIO button 9.

“AUDIO 1” appears in the display.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “BAL” display item.

Move the joystick 7 up/right ordown/left to adjust the right/left vol-ume distribution.

Adjusting the display brightnessIf your car radio has been connectedas described in the installation instruc-tions, the display brightness will switchover when the headlights are turned on/off. The display brightness can be ad-justed separately for night and day insteps ranging from 1-6. We recommendsetting “6”.

Daytime display brightness

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “DISP” display item.

Setting the button illuminationcolourThe colour of the device’s button illumi-nation can be adjusted. Choose be-tween “COLOR 1” or “COLOR 2”.

Keep pressing the softkey 4 as-signed to the “KEYS” display itemuntil the required colour (“COLOR1” or “COLOR 2”) appears in thedisplay.

Setting the level displayThe level display briefly provides a sym-bolic display of the volume, the soundcontrol settings and the equalizer set-tings whilst you are making your chang-es.

When you are not changing any set-tings, the level display can display thecar radio’s output level. You can alsoswitch off the level display and have thecurrent volume level displayed continu-ously.

Switching the level display on/off

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “DISP” display item.

Keep pressing the softkey 4 as-signed to the “EQ” display item un-til the required setting “EQ DISPOFF” or “EQ DISP ON” appears.

Radio modeThis unit is equipped with an RDS radioreceiver. Many of the receivable FM sta-tions transmit a signal that not only car-ries the programme but also additionalinformation such as the station nameand programme type (PTY).

The station name appears in the dis-play as soon as it is received. You canoptionally display the programme type.For further details, please read the sec-tion entitled “Programme type (PTY)”.

Configuring the tunerTo ensure that the tuner works proper-ly, the device must be configured foryour region. You can choose betweenEurope and the USA. By default, thetuner is set to the region in which thedevice was sold. If you experience prob-lems with radio reception, please checkthese settings.

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “SETP” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “AREA” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe display item of the region thatyou require: “EURO” or “USA”.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theMENU button 8 to close themenu.

The settings are saved.

Switching to radio modeIf the device is in CD mode, cassettemode, Multi-Media Card (MMC) mode(depending on the car radio’s equip-ment) or CD changer/Compact DriveMP3 mode,

press the TUNER button <.

The main radio menu for tuning into astation is displayed. The radio modefunctions are controlled in the radio func-tions menu. You can open the radiofunctions menu by pressing the TUN-ER button < again. If you are in anyother mode, you can open the radiofunctions menu by pressing the MENUbutton 8 followed by the softkey 4that is assigned to the “TUNE” displayitem.

Convenient RDS functions(AF, REG)The convenient RDS functions AF (Al-ternative Frequency) and REG (Region-al) extend your radio’s range of func-tions (only in FM radio mode).

AF: If this RDS function is activat-ed, the unit automatically tunes intothe best receivable frequency forthe station that is currently set.

REG: At certain times, some radiostations divide their programmeinto regional programmes providingdifferent content. You can use theREG function to prevent the car ra-dio from switching to alternativefrequencies that are providing dif-ferent regional programme content.

Storing stations automatically(Travelstore)You can automatically store the six sta-tions with the strongest reception in theregion (only FM). The stations are storedin the FMT memory bank.

Note:Any stations that were previously storedin this memory bank are deleted in theprocess.

Starting the Travelstore function

The station storing procedure begins.“T-STORE” appears in the display. Af-ter the process is completed, the sta-tion stored in FMT memory location 1will be played.

Listening to stored stations Select the memory bank or wave-

Press the softkey 4 that is as-signed to the name or frequency ofthe station that you want to listento.

Programme type (PTY)Besides transmitting the station name,some FM stations also provide informa-tion on the type of programme that theyare broadcasting. Your radio can receiveand display this information.

Using the PTY function, you can direct-ly select stations of a particular pro-gramme type.

PTY-EONIf you specify the programme type andstart seek tuning, the unit will switch fromthe current station to a station of theselected programme type.

Note: If no station is found that corre-

sponds to the selected programmetype, you will hear a beep soundand “NO PTY” appears briefly inthe display. The radio will then re-tune to the station that was re-ceived last.

If the tuned radio station or anotherstation on the broadcasting net-work broadcasts the required pro-gramme type at a later point intime, the radio automaticallyswitches from the currently tunedstation or from cassette / CDchanger / Compact Drive MP3mode to the station whose pro-gramme type matches the one youselected.

The next receivable station correspond-ing to your selected programme type willthen be tuned into.

If no station is found that correspondsto the selected programme type, you willhear a beep sound and “NO PTY” ap-pears briefly in the display. The radiowill then retune to the station that wasreceived last.

Note:If you want to switch back to the pro-gramme types display,

briefly move the joystick 7 in anydirection.

Optimising radio reception

Treble reduction feature duringinterference (HiCut)The HiCut function improves the soundduring poor radio reception. If interfer-ence occurs, the treble is automaticallyreduced thus reducing the interferencelevel.

Traffic informationYour unit is equipped with an RDS-EONreceiver. EON (Enhanced Other Net-work) is a feature that involves thebroadcasting of radio station informa-tion within a broadcasting network.Every time a traffic announcement (TA)is transmitted, you will automatically beswitched from a station that does notprovide traffic information to a stationwithin the broadcasting network thatdoes.Once the traffic announcement hasbeen heard, you will be switched backto the programme that you were listen-ing to before.

Changing the playback directionTo switch between the two playback di-rections SIDE A and SIDE B,

Skipping tracks (S-CPS)To play the next track or any track there-after,

press the joystick 7 upwardsonce or several times until thenumber of tracks you want to skipappears in the display alongside“CPS FF”.

“CPS FF” appears in the display togeth-er with the number of tracks to beskipped. The tape is forwarded to thenext track or any other subsequent trackthat you selected.

To select one of the previous tracks,

To stop repeating the track,

Normal playback is then resumed. “RPTOFF” appears briefly in the display.

Changing the displayYou can switch between various displaymodes in cassette mode:

Naming CDsThe car radio allows you to assignnames for up to 99 CDs (not with theCompact Drive MP3) so that you canrecognise them more easily. The namescan be a maximum of eight characterslong.

If you try assigning more than 99 names,“FULL” will appear in the display.

Entering / editing CD names

Listen to the CD that you want toname.

Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “CDC” display item.

The CD changer functions menu opens.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “NAME” display item.

You will now enter edit mode. If yourchosen CD does not have a name yet,eight underscores will appear in the dis-play. The current input position flashes.

Move the joystick 7 up or down toselect the character you want. Ifyou want an empty space, simplyselect the underscore.

Listen to the CD whose name youwant to delete.

Deleting all CD namesYou can delete all the CD names storedin the unit.

EqualizerThis unit is equipped with a digital soundcalibration feature (DSA – Digital SoundAdjustment). It provides you with threeself-calibrating 5-band equalizers andfive sound presets.

The EQ1 - EQ3 equalizers can be cali-brated automatically with the help of aspecial calibration microphone. You canobtain this microphone from your Blau-punkt dealer. The automatically ascer-tained values can also be adjustedmanually.

Furthermore, you can also set the equal-izer manually.

The following bands are available:

SUB LOW EQ 32 - 50 Hz

LOW EQ 63 - 250 Hz

MID EQ 315 - 1,250 Hz

MID/HIGH EQ 1,600 - 6,300 Hz

HIGH EQ 8,000 - 12,500 Hz

To activate the equalizer,

Automatically calibrating theequalizerYou can electronically calibrate andstore values for three different situations.

EQ 1 for the driver onlyEQ 2 for the driver and front

passengerEQ 3 for the front and rear occupants

Hold the calibration microphone (avail-able as an accessory) in the appropri-ate position whilst the calibration is tak-ing place.

The position of the calibration micro-phone for situation 1 (e.g. for the driveralone) is at the height of the driver'shead.

For situation 2, the calibration micro-phone is between the driver and pas-senger.

For Situation 3, it is in the middle of thevehicle interior (left/right, front/back).

Really quiet surroundings are requiredfor the calibration. Any extraneous noisewill distort the measured values.

To calibrate an equalizer,

Press the DEQ+ button 5.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “USER” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe display item of the equalizerthat you want to configure.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “AUTO” display item.

You will hear a test sound, and calibra-tion takes place.

Proceed as described for all theequalizers.

Selecting an equalizerAfter calibration has taken place or youhave finished making manual adjust-ments,

press the DEQ+ button 5.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “USER” display item.

Select one of the equalizers “EQ1”,“EQ2” or “EQ3” using the corre-sponding softkeys 4.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theDEQ+ button 5 to close themenu.

The settings are saved.

Selecting sound presetsYou can select sound presets for thefollowing music types.

VOCAL (“VOCL”)

DISCO (“DISC”)

ROCK

TECHNO (“TECH”)

CLASSIC (“CLAS”)

The settings for these music styles havealready been programmed.

Press the DEQ+ button 5.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “PRE” display item.

Select one of the presets using thecorresponding softkeys 4.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theDEQ+ button 5 to close themenu.

The settings are saved.

Manually adjusting the equalizer

Notes on adjusting the settingsWe recommend you use a CD or cas-sette (depending on the car radio’sequipment) that you are familiar with formaking changes to the settings.

Before adjusting the equalizer, set thesound and volume distribution settingsto zero and deactivate X-BASS. For fur-ther details, refer to the chapter entitled“Sound and volume distribution set-tings”.

Listen to a CD or cassette (de-pending on the car radio’s equip-ment).

What impression does the soundgive you?

Now read the “Sound impression”column in the table entitled “Helpadjusting the equalizer”.

Set the equalizer values as de-scribed in the “Measures” column.

Making adjustments

Press the DEQ+ button 5.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “USER” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe display item of the equalizerthat you want to configure.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe display item of the equalizerband that you want to configure.

To select the frequency,

press the joystick 7 to the left orright.

Adjust the level for the frequencyby pressing the joystick 7 up ordown.

Press the joystick OK 7 or theDEQ+ button 5 to close themenu.

TMC for dynamic navigationsystemsTMC stands for “Traffic Message Chan-nel.” Traffic information announcementsare broadcast digitally using TMC, whichmeans they can be used by compatiblenavigation systems during route plan-ning. Your car radio has a TMC outputwhich you can use for connecting Blau-punkt navigation systems. You can findout from your Blaupunkt dealer whichnavigation systems can be used withyour car radio.

Amplifier / sub-outThe car radio provides connections forconnecting external amplifiers. You canalso connect a subwoofer to the unit'sintegrated low-pass filter. In order for thisto work, the amplifier and subwoofermust be connected in the manner de-scribed in the installation instructions.

We recommend you use well-matchedproducts from the Blaupunkt or Veloci-ty product ranges.

External audio sourcesIn addition to the CD changer, you canalso connect another external audiosource equipped with a line output. Theaudio source can, for example, be aportable CD player, MiniDisc player orMP3 player.

The AUX input must be activated in thesetup menu.

If you want to connect an external au-dio source, you will need an adaptercable. You can obtain this cable from aBlaupunkt dealer.

Switching the AUX input on/off Press the MENU button 8.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “SETP” display item.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “AUX1” or “AUX2” display itemfor the input that you want to switchon/off.

The AUX menu is displayed.

Note:If a CD changer is connected, you can-not change the “AUX1” input.

Press the softkey 4 assigned tothe “ON” or “OFF” display item toswitch the input on/off.

Note:If the AUX input is switched on it can beselected by pressing the SOURCE but-ton ;.
