VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 JUNE, 2012

Dear MADAR Family Members,

It was only a couple of weeks back I had the honor of attending KG, and Grade 12 graduation ceremony. In the first one I was impressed with one of our KG 2 students who was the master of ceremonies of that celebration. It took him few seconds to muster his

courage and then he spoke freely in a flawless and eloquent language in front of parents with confidence. In the latter function, MADAR International School celebrated the 6th graduating batch of Class of 2012. Some of these 18 graduates have already gained their initial admission to reputable international universities, and all of them are equipped with lifelong learning and skills to achieve their dreams and peruse their future.

MADAR International School, has recently received its international accreditation for another cycle of five years by AdvancED USA, a through quality review was conducted by international inspectors for almost a week who have assessed the school self evaluation and day to day operation against 7 quality standards. The school was rated 3 out of 4 in 6 of them. MADAR International School was found meeting international academic standards and made an absolutely lingering impression on the AdvancED team “if I ever work in UAE, I would prefer that my 14 year old daughter study in this school” as one of the inspectors said, addressing our teachers.

AdvancEd team has stated the following commendation;

• The school leadership provides the resources and support to faculty and students that help create a familial learning environment which enhances school effectiveness.

• The school provides ample opportunity for follow up activities designed to facilitate and reinforce student learning.

• The school has created multiple ongoing teacher collaborated professional development opportunities for its staff members.

• The school is committed to maintaining a first rate facility that creates a healthy, safe, and orderly environment conducive to learning.

As the academic year comes to an end, I look back with honor, pride and satisfaction for what MADAR International School has achieved with the help of its Board of Directors, teachers, students, parents and administrators. I strongly believe that MADAR International School will carry on this journey of continuous improvement, and seek the very best of teaching practices, curriculum development, and provide care and guidance to our students.

Best wishes for all!

The Tree Planting event has been a tradition at MADAR International School for six years. The ceremonial event which took place on May 1st, 2012 has brought twelfth graders of 2011- 2012 and post- graduates together cheerfully. Students

have celebrated the tradition with the school Director, AQAs, teachers, and parents by planting a tree. The symbolic event represents the departing of grade 12 and simultaneously leaving behind a path to be followed by their successors.

Miss Rouaa Al Halabi is one of the alumni of MADAR International School (Class of 2010) and currently studying Civil Engineering at ADU. Miss Rouaa particularly liked the activities that were held at

the school which helped her build a strong personality and good communication and presentation skills. Rouaa said: “MADAR made my life easier and my grades higher at university as most of the university and college requirement courses were taken at MADAR International School”.

Ms. Khouloud Al Jammal is the HEAD of Science Department at MADAR International School as well as being a Biology and Chemistry teacher. She joined the school in 2006 and since then has become a valuable member at MADAR School. Ms. Khoulod is proud to be part of MADAR’s family and

believes that working in such school with international quality standards and a pleasant work environment gives credit to any employee.

Ms. Nisreen teaches English from Grades 8 up to Grade 12 at MADAR International School. She has started her work experience in 1996 and has joined the school

in 2006. As an experienced teacher holding both Bachelors in Teaching and High Diploma in Leadership and Management, she said “Leadership practices oblige me to discover my students’ potentials and channel those potentials to serve creativity and humanity in an educational atmosphere”.

Mr. Mazen holds a Maitrise-es Sciences Degree in pure Mathematics. He comes from Lebanon and joined MADAR International School in August 2009 to teach Math from Grades 8 up to 12. Educating and helping students to succeed has been his biggest priority. Mr. Mazen is interested in mental games and activities and believes in the importance of teaching them to students in order to improve their cognitive skills.

OUR SILENT SOLDIERS: Their sole concern is to assure that all students at MADAR International School are safe and well-seated during their daily travels to and from the school. We appreciate and would never forget the role of the drivers; Barakat, Dawood Saif, Ibrahim, Javed, Kalodi, Masood, Moideen, Muhammad, Qassam, Rashid, Abdul Aziz, Zahir and Dawood Shah. Thank you for the hard work.

Mrs. Sultan Al Kuwaiti has two children at MADAR International School; Mohammad in Grade 9 and Abdulla in Grade 7. She has a work experience of 21 years in the field of teaching and school directing as she is the director of Amoria School. She enrolled her two children at MADAR International School because she liked the comprehensive way of teaching which is very similar to the one adopted at universities. She said “I can feel that my children are getting strong academic results with strong language ability each year. I am really satisfied with MADAR International School and good evidence would be recommending the school for my relatives and bringing them in”.

Striving Towards

Tips to Parents - Here are some ways parents can help children learn to think creatively:1) Give children experiences that will stimulate

all their senses – By taking them to trips and asking them questions about their surroundings.

2) Provide a variety of books selection.3) Consider their opinion in aspects of their

daily lives - Have open ended discussions with your children to prompt their imagination and develop their self expression skills.

4) Nurture their hobbies by providing the resources to practice them.

5) Allow some ‘playing’ time - Children needtime to relax, to think their own thoughts, to daydream or to dream.

6) Constantlypraiseyourchild’screativity.

Everyday our institution welcomes our students with an open heart and a positive attitude. Our purpose is to enrich the life of our students and fill it with educational

aspiration and an inquisitive personality. Our students then go home and share their experiences with their parents. During this education process that starts on our behalf and ends with yours as parents, our students are growing personally, cognitively, and physically.

AVOID THE FOLLOWING:1.) Judgingyourchildren’sperformance.2.) Creating a situation where your child

always feels like he / she is competing against someone.

3.) Pressuring your child by setting expectations that cannot be met.

4.) Restricting their choice – not allowing the children to ask questions.

Creativity

One of the many important characteristics that must be promoted in our students is creativity. Activities in our classrooms include the writing storm; which is a student journal or diary that students keep to jot down their imaginative ideas and stories. Scientific hands on experiments are a great opportunity for our students to improve and build upon their creativity skills. Students will remember the material better, feel a sense of accomplishment when the task is completed, and most importantly will be able to transfer that experience easier to other learning situations.

Creativity techniques like projects and experimental activities force our students to ask questions, to think by requiring interpretation of the observed events rather than memorization of correct responses, also promoting cause and effect thinking. In Mathematics, we do not only rely on solving mathematical problems from textbooks, we also set critical thinking questions like mental math and logic word problems. The science fair, reading competitions, writing competitions, and educational trips all promote creativity. With creativity will come further innovation. This is an opportunity for us to come together as a school and family to shape the vision of the future of our students together by striving to creativity.

MADAR’s Got Talent 2012

Art Exhibition Parents’ Information Session

KG Mother’s Day Celebration

Ma Ma Ma…Me Me Me…No one has a mom like me! This is how our KG students welcomed their mothers in our KG celebration for mother’s day. This special event was held over two days, where mothers were invited to enjoy the beautiful performance of their children on stage. The students were confidently singing and they were happy to see their mothers giving them a big applause at the end of the performance. The event included a small exhibition of the students’ crafts and a small activity that the mothers shared and enjoyed with their children. A special Thanks goes for all KG teachers and all those who participated in making this event a successful one.

In February, an informative session for KG parents was held in order to let the parents have a clear idea about the KG system in general. The session focused mainly on the strategies used for teaching English at MADAR KG. In addition to other topics that are related to our school system, activities, and routine.

It’s wonderful to see the students of MADAR in the spotlight. With so many brave and talented students it’s a pleasure to see the huge variety of musical, dramatic and visual displays. My gratitude goes on to all of the students who helped prepare for the event. Your hard work in setting up the artwork in the gymnasium and in painting the stage design made the night a great success!

The Music Department at MADAR led a very successful Talent Show “MADAR’s Got Talent” where around 50 of our students of Grades 5 through 12 participated in different performances. These students rehearsed for two months prior to the show, and the hard work paid off.

Poetry, Choir, Orff band (Xylophones and Metallophones) in a selection of Arabic and African songs, piano solo,

pop-rock band, acting, yola dance and solo singing (Arabic and English), all took place on MADAR stage in beautiful performances that reflected the students’ enthusiasm, self esteem as well as their

great talents. The show this year was enriched by the special performances of two alumni students; Khalifa Al

Budoor and Rafic Al Koush who delighted the audience with their distinguished musical talents.

Chess Competition

Sports Day

In term two, students of MADAR International School donated an amount of 7228.5 DHs to the Red Crescent. This amount was collected in order to give a helping hand for those people suffering in different places of the world. Such activity aims at training our students to be active citizens in their community through building the principles of voluntary work, humnity, and independence.

The school held a chess tournament in term two for one week during the break time. 14 students participated from Grades 5 through 12 and enjoyed the competition as it swells their confidence and pride by testing their skills in front of other people. Congratulations to the winners: Jakoub Lamarre & Shaher Khan from Grade 12, and Abdul Aziz Al Baloushi from Grade 6 respectively.

During the second term, Grades 1-12 participated in their respective Sports Days. The students were divided into different house teams: Falcons, Dolphins, Sharks and Tigers. The students together with their teachers enjoyed the days’ events. The students had lots of fun in competing against their friends in relay races, games and

different sports to accumulate points for their houses. Participating in the Sports

Day was a great opportunity for the students to practice and develop sportsmanship,

fellowship and leadership. The winning team received a trophy and each student received a certificate.

MADAR International School has formed a boys’ football team from the most talented students of Grades 5 -9. This team practices every Wednesday with the PE teacher Mr. Wasem Wakeel. The team played 2 friendly matches with Emirates National School last term. Grade 5 & 6 team won their first match 2:0 showing fabulous team work and tactics. Grade 5 – 9 team played an excellent match where they managed to end up winning 3:1 though it was more challenging. It is worth mentioning that our students have shown excellent behavior visiting other schools and this was noticed by the other schools’ staff. Mr. Al-Adwan, School Director, invited the team to his office and thanked them for the excellent way of representing MADAR International School and wished them all the best in their coming matches. Well done Team!

All KG students were given the chance to show and tell about their favorite pet during the theme of “Animals”. This activity is important for building our students character as it is the first step of training them on the presentation skills that they will carry with them throughout their life in the future.

Reading Week 2012

Story Writing Competition

Reading Week was a cross-curricular theme week that involved all students from Grades 1-4. From April 22nd to 26th, students participated in a variety of literacy based activities, such as Spelling Bee competitions, Read-A-Thons and Buddy Reading between classes. The Arabic and English teachers worked collaboratively to create multilingual stories with their students. Each student wrote a unique story in both English and Arabic which included vivid illustrations for their audience.

The English Department was pleased this year to be able to run a story- writing competition for Grades 5 and 6. We had an excellent submission rate from some unique and exciting young scribblers. For two truly impressive

stories, first place was awarded to Erada Al Shibli in Grade 6H for ‘Harmony and the Mysteries Locket’ and to

Hind Al Ghaithi Grade 5 for the ‘Dirty Little Boy’. Well done girls!

Thanks to the mothers of Grades 1-4 for their presence and great turnout during the Primary Class Room Visits in weeks 7 & 8. Their visits have helped in supporting their children and raising the level of understanding with the school which in return can assist us in improving our educational plans and processes.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you will go.” – Dr. Seuss

A nice sketch was prepared and performed by KG2 English teachers; Ms. Heather, Ms. Monique and Ms. Ciara. The sketch

was followed by a real practice for the students using a tooth brush to brush a teeth model brought into their classes.

I have always loved painting; it’s one of my passions. I enjoyed helping Miss Sara with painting the

custom hand wall murals inside and outside the school. One of the various reasons

I love painting is that my friends and I enjoy every moment of it; we sing, joke around, and have fun. I take pleasure in Art because it relaxes me,

anything artistic soothes

As a continuity of the activities that take place in our school every year, the Music department still exerts efforts in representing the students’ talents and skills. Two Music Shows took place under the name of “The World Speaks Music” for Grades 1&2 and “We Dream” for Grades 3&4. The students have presented a distinguished performance on the stage and impressed all the attendees.

“Our science fair granted the opportunity for students to execute hands- on experiments under the supervision of their teachers. It is worth mentioning that the parents played an important role in instigating the students by participating and sharing the fun of the experiments performed in this science fair”.

“The Art Exhibition was filled by the wonderful work of the students and the Book Fair had many books to choose from different levels. Both were much enjoyed by those who attended”.

Art Exhibition.. Science & Book Fair 2012..

Committed to our goal in enhancing our student’s entrepreneurial thinking and skills, MADAR International School hosted the programs provided by Injaz _ UAE to support and fulfill these needs.

MADAR International School has continued to host Post- secondary educational institutions to its campus with the goal of creating awareness amongst students about our next academic step along the route of knowledge. In the second term, thanks to MADAR, three new institutions have been invited. Representatives of University of Southampton and the Higher Colleges of Technology provided us with valuable information about their systems and how they function. Global Vision, a respected organization that acts as a link between the graduates of the Arab world and a number of universities located in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, gave us the chance to ask about universities abroad and enlist in them if possible. I am undoubtedly thankful for all the support that MADAR International School has given us in preparing for the future and in accomplishing our goals.

Talking to students about their experience, Rouda Al Dhaheri & Alyazia Al Khaili from Grade 11 said:

“Injaz was a great opportunity to show our creativity at a young age. Our company “ Ana Unico” resembles our thoughts through our T-shirts. During this successful journey we had the best support from our family, friends and teachers. We won for “ Best Effort”, so thank you all !”

“Through workshops and weekly training sessions, students learn a number of applied skills and expand their knowledge base, through volunteers from the private sector, enabling them to become more competitive when they join the national labor force. Under the Injaz – UAE Company Program, students of grades 11 and 12 formed teams that work collaboratively under the guidance of volunteers from the private sector, Razek Kato and Samha Ferdosian, to establish a real company over a period of three months. In doing so, student companies join a national competition of student led companies which is scheduled in early June. Meanwhile, students of grades 7,8 and 9 joined the Entrepreneurship Master Class: A one day workshop that acts as an early eye opener on the skills and potentials of entrepreneurial thinking.” Pierre Atallah, Program Manager

Fire drills were intended several times during term two and the last one was in the presence of the civil defense. The purpose of the fire drill is to promote an attitude of mind whereby people will react rationally when confronted with a fire or another emergency at school or elsewhere. Also, nominated people will be duly trained to carry out their responsibilities for the fire evacuation procedure and ensure the safety of students and staff. According to the Civil Defense Department’s assessment; MADAR International School has succeeded to achieve a speedy evacuation compared to other schools.

In line with the Continuous Professional Development program for our teachers, a workshop on Differentiation & Assessment for learning was held at MADAR International School by the School Improvement Partner from ADEC Mr. Ajmer Sundher. The tasks and activities conducted during the workshop were very interesting, effective, and much enjoyed by those teachers attended.

The school has appointed Ms Sara El Arbid for the position of Academic Quality Auditor for Grades 1 through 6. Ms. Sara holds a Bachelors of Science from the University of Ottawa, Canada with diverse work experience as an academic advisor and a teacher in Canada and in UAE. She aims to build a creative learning environment that is both nurturing, and challenging in order to deliver the highest quality of education to our students.

Providing our students with the highest safety precautions is one of our upmost priorities. As a result, MADAR International School established two slopes this term to facilitate the movement of the students. One slope at the KG building and the other one at the girls’ gate considering people with special needs.
