Five-years-old Rowan Lawlor at the household tax protest march in Skibbereen last Saturday afternoon. BY CAROL GILBERT ‘IF I go into a bookies, bet on a horse and lose my money, will the government pay me back the money I have lost?’ asked Ed Harper, during the first in a series of speeches at the protest demonstration against house- hold taxes, held in Skibbereen last Saturday. Ed, who has lived in West Cork for 33 years, likened the payment of €1.25 billion to un- secured bond holders as no more than a gambling debt and said bond holders were no more than gamblers, conclud- ing: ‘This government is pay- ing back the bond holders’ gambling debt and penalising the poor, sick, young and eld- erly to do so.’ Despite the drizzle, cold, wet and thoroughly miserable con- ditions last Saturday upwards of 200 people joined the protest against the household tax, septic tank charge, water charges and taxes so compre- hensive, ‘an air tax’ was sug- gested as the next tax to be im- posed by the government because ‘everyone has to breathe!’ Billed as a ‘fun protest,’ bag- piper John Madden from Crossbarry and a number of bodhran players led the marchers on a circuitous route from the Fairfield to the Square, Skibbereen, so they could demonstrate outside the Skibbereen office of Cork South West TD, Mr Noel Har- rington. Most marchers carried plac- ards, displaying statements such as ‘Empty promises,’ ‘Cit- izens United We Stand, Divided We Fall,’ ‘Stealing our Future’ and ‘Sold Out.’ A huge banner carried the message: ‘The Gov- ernment has sold Ireland’s soul.’ As the crowd chanted in uni- son, ‘Can’t Pay! Won’t Pay!’ passing drivers honked their horns in support and contin- ued to indicate their support during the hour long speech- es, which were unanimous in their condemnation of taxes being imposed. Not to register With only 5% of the popula- tion having registered for the household tax or septic tank charges, people were asked not to register with speakers say- ing if enough people refused to register, the government would have to think again as they could not prosecute everyone. There was condemnation of the politicians’ gravy train rolling on while they demanded pain, sacrifice and austerity from the sick, the weak and the most vulnerable. John Cronin, speaking as a member of the Septic Tank Charges Campaign, warned of the sweeping legislation being introduced and powers that in- spectors would have. He warned: ‘The inspectors can- not come into your dwelling, but it will be their opinion which will decide about the condition of your septic tank and the public has no recourse to courts, EPA or TDs to object to that opinion.’ He cited the situation elsewhere, where it cost septic tank owners an av- erage of €3,800 to bring their systems up to the required standard. Contact councillors He encouraged protestors to contact their town and county councillors saying they were the people who needed to stand up to the government: ‘If they will not, get them out and get in people who can!’ One of the speakers, Rob Hy- land, encouraged people not to register and to stand together saying: ‘We must remain unit- ed. We must be really careful otherwise they will pick us off, one by one.’ He said: ‘The government is robbing the old, poor, young and needy, and we need to fight now so that we may be cele- brated by future generations rather than condemned by them!’ Another speaker said this was the first opportunity the public had to stand together and let the government know exactly what the people thought of their failed promis- es.
