T he School Opinion Survey is undertaken each year by the
department’s State School Division to obtain the opinions of
parents, caregivers, students and school staff about important aspects
of schooling. The survey is designed to help schools idenfy what they do
well and what they can improve.
This year the School Opinion Surveys will be conducted from 31st July to 25th
August 2017. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be
invited to parcipate. We strongly encourage you to take this opportunity to have
your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve.
Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with the eldest in the
family toward the end of July. The access details will be included in leers that are
printed on BLUE paper. On this leer is a unique code that can be used to provide your
feedback. This code is a single use only code to ensure your privacy. There is also the
facility to complete the survey at our school. School computers will be available each
morning in the library a"er 8:15am when Mrs Maunder or Mrs Birrer will be available to
assist you.
Survey queries or requests for translaons can be directed to the office by telephone,
49400333 or by email, [email protected].
T he uniform we wear at Mackay North State School has been endorsed by the members of our
P&C and is what we encourage all of our students to wear each day.
A school uniform teaches students to take pride in their appearance and in being part of the school
they aend. It also means students don’t have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their
clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn’t so important.
There is no compeon about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of
financial pressure on parents. Potenal bullies have one less target for their insults; it’s hard to make
fun of what someone is wearing when you’re dressed exactly the same.
In America, where a majority of schools do not have a uniform, roughly 160 000 children miss school
every day due to fear of aack or inmidaon by other students. (The Guardian, October 2013)
Our uniform is black and yellow/gold. Students are required to wear the school shirt,
or a plain yellow one unl a school shirt is purchased. Black shorts, skorts, skirts or long
pants are also required. In the cooler months, a black or yellow coat/jacket is necessary.
Our hat is black with a brim. Other hats need to be kept for home. Shoes are closed in
and should be mainly black or white.
We appreciate the effort parents are making to ensure their child/children are wearing
the correct uniform to school. Thank you for your diligence in this maer. It makes a
huge difference in how we look together as a group and in the sense of belonging it
creates.

A t Mackay North State School our teachers communicate with
parents and carers on a regular basis. The purpose of this
communicaon is to keep parents informed as much as possible of the
acvies children are engaging in at school. If you have any quesons
concerning your child’s progress at school then I encourage you to arrange a
convenient me to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss these maers.
There are a number of ways that we communicate as a school on a regular basis:
1. Our fortnightly newsleer
2. Our school’s web page - [email protected]
3. Skoolbag app - available on all Smartphones
4. Weekly class notes in Communicaon Book
5. Emails
6. Phone calls – teachers can’t take phone calls during teaching mes,
but a message can be le" asking them to return your call
7. Meeng with teachers before/a"er school
8. Parent Teacher meengs in Term 1 and Term 3
9. Parades - every Friday morning at 8:45am in the Hall
Over the next few weeks parents and carers will have the opportunity to arrange a Parent
Teacher meeng with your child’s teachers and I encourage every parent to take advantage of
this. This is a chance for you to discuss any concerns, set learning goals and ask quesons on how
your child’s learning is progressing. Please look out for the leer of invitaon over the next few
weeks.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that everyone enjoyed some
quality me with family and friends and had a chance to rest and
relax. As always, we have another very busy term ahead. It is pleasing
to see students seling back into the rounes of school and focusing on
their learning. I am looking forward to working with the students this term in
my role as Acng Deputy Principal.
COMMUNICATION
Our value focus across the school at the moment is communicaon. Students have
been looking at how to be an effecve communicator. Our ability to communicate has
a big influence on the way we are able to get along with other people. Open and honest
communicaon is an important part of making friends and having healthy relaonships.
As adults we need to promote, model and encourage posive communicaon and teach
our children these skills so that they are able to interact appropriately with others.
5 TIPS FOR BEING A GOOD COMMUNICATOR
1) Eye Contact – look at the speaker so that they know you are interested in what they have
to say.
2) Acve Listening – an essenal part of the communicaon process! You can let someone
know you are listening by looking at them, nodding your head and asking quesons.
3) Take Turns – communicaon is about sharing; one person talks while one listens and then
the roles are reversed. Paence is an important skill to learn so that we are not interrupng
the speaker.
4) Think about what you are going to say - this is an important skill for children and adults to
remember when communicang with others. Is what you are about to say useful, is it kind, is
it your informaon to tell, is it appropriate?
5) Think about where you are – the type of communicaon we use differs depending on our
locaon. It is important to model different types of communicaon and discuss the
difference with your child.

ATTENDANCE
Our last week of Term 2 was quite disappoinng across the
school with only four classes reaching our goal of 95%. It seems
many people decided that the last day of school was a holiday.
Congratulaons to the parents and students in 4JH who displayed a
commitment to aending school every school day in the lead up to the holi-
days. Term 3 has begun with what is shaping up to be an outstanding term with
high aendance right across the whole school. Remember that every day counts!

Hello again Mackay North Families,
2017
NaAonally Consistent CollecAon of Data on
School Students with Disability This yearly collecAon occurs in Term 3. As a school team this collecAon will
occur in the next couple of weeks.
Collecng data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and
educaon authories support the parcipaon of students with disability in
schooling on the same basis as students without disability.
All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collecon
of data on school students with disability.
This term, all Australian schools, in the public and private sectors, will parcipate in
this federally mandated collecon of data.
The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. Please be
reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisaon, any data
that can idenfy an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level
to be reported naonally is the:
• the number of students who are provided with reasonable adjustments to address
a disability under the Disability Discrimina=on Act 1992 (DDA) and Disability Stand-
ards for Educa=on 2005 (DSE);
• the level of adjustment that students with disability are being provided to meet long
-term (10+ weeks) needs associated with a disability in the 12 months preceding the
naonal data collecon submission date;
• the broad category of disability.
Consultaon with parents is important not only for the data collecon but also to ensure you
are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore
connue to consult with you. All students who are included in this data will have a Disability
Discriminaon Act Personalized Learning (DDA PL) record created in OneSchool. For further
informaon please see links below:

Families of beginner instrumental students - remember your child will need their own instrument

Likewise if your child is needing to upgrade their instrument and you are wanng to sell their current
one, remember we have a group of beginners looking for instruments to buy. Please contact the

Semester 1 tests com-
pleted, blue skies, the smell
of sunscreen, yellow dresses (and a singlet), the squeak of shoes
and 21 extremely excited students represenng Mackay North State
School at the annual Netball Gala Day. This is what I, Mr Williams (solely,
by myself, alone and with no help), faced on the 21st
June this year.
A"er se[ng up our bright yellow tent, thanks to Mr Popperwell and his guns of
steel, the girls (and one boy) rolled up ready to go hard or go home. Mrs Day also
came with an a[tude (posive I assure you). The school sent two teams, a junior and
senior team, to compete. Approximately 60 different school based teams were involved
at this year’s event, with three divisions for each junior and senior level. Our teams played
in the middle division for both. Each played six games with five wins and a draw. The end of
day winners would be decided by which team scored the most goals, regardless of wins/
losses.
A"er a busy day of play, rest, eat,
repeat, all the teams were gathered for
the announcement of the junior and senior
winning teams.
The senior division goes to… Victoria Park.
Our senior girls put in a great effort and
although they did not suffer a loss the whole
day, they did not score enough goals to take
out the prize (it wasn’t by much).
And the Junior division champions are… Mackay
North State School! Inspired shoong and
energec teamwork was shown by the lile ones
(literally, no taller than a metre some of them) to
win their division.
Congratulaons to the Junior team for winning the Darlene Robinson Memorial Shield, and a big
congratulaons to all those involved in this absolutely flawless day. Students should be very proud of how
they carried themselves both during games and off the court.
∗ Big thank you to Mr Popperwell for
se[ng up and dismantling the
tent for our comfort.
∗ Thank you to Ms Balchin for her help
in organising and supporng the
day.
∗ Special menon to Mrs Day who was
an immense help throughout the
enre day, looking a"er teams and
scoring when required.
∗ And thank you to parents for
not screaming so loud as
to get me into trouble!
Quotes: “Fantasc sportsballing!” Malcom Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia.
“Mr Williams, you’re so annoying,” Libby Schill, Year 5.

Every year, Mrs Jan Bell, a former Mackay North State School teacher aide for
20 years, travels to the Solomon Islands and volunteers her time and
knowledge to help set up school libraries in many remote areas.
Jan has come up with a novel idea for any unwanted “Marvel Heroes” tokens
that were being given to Woolworths shoppers ie. THEY WOULD MAKE GREAT
COUNTERS.
This promotion has stopped. However, if you have any you do not want please
consider giving them to the Solomon Island children. Any amount you can
donate for this worthy cause would be greatly appreciated. All donations can be
left at the office in the box labelled

Therapeutic Foster Carers are needed in the Mackay region. These types of carers provide safe homes to children whose needs are higher and more complex than other children. They have often experienced significant trauma, grief and loss, and as a result will often have challenging behaviours. Some of these children can also have an intellectual or physical disability. Foster carers who provide this type of care are resili-ent, calm, patient, nurturing and have a good sense of humour.
We believe every child has the right to a loving and secure home and we provide additional supports, training and 24 hour on call to carers who take care of children with complex needs.
