AGROSIL 1000 and AGROSIL 2500 are supplied in 6 mlengths packed in wooden frame pallets. The pallets mustbe packed exactly on top of one another on transportvehicles and secured against slipping. On the site, use suitable lifting gear to unload and transportthe pallets, such as fork-lift trucks or a crane with cushionedslings. Do not unload by tipping or throwing. The storage site should be firm and free of any foreignbodies that might damage the pipes. Stack max. 2 palletson top of each other and make sure that the wooden framesof the pallets are placed exactly. Stack loose pipes on alevel place with displaced sleeves to a max. height of 1.5m and secure at the sides. Because of the low weight, singlepipes can easily be transported by hand and lowered intothe trench without being thrown.Shaft material and fittings are supplied loose or onnonreturnable pallets.

    MACHINING

Check pipes and fittings before machining. Separate alldamaged parts. The limit temperatures for transport and layingAGROSIL 2500 PE-HD pipes are between -20 °C and+40 °C.AGROSIL 1000 PVC-U pipes are sensitive to low temperatures. For this reason, do not lay them if the temperature is below0°C and take special care when transporting them, takingaccount of their low temperature brittleness.Use a finetoothed saw to cut lengths by sawing in thetroughs without cutting the profile. With full and partial drainage pipes, after cleaning thesleeves are pushed together dry; with larger nominal widthsuse a lever where necessary, with a board between the leverand the end of the pipe to protect the surface. With multi-purpose pipes and unperforated multi-purpose pipes cleanthe sleeves, tapered end and sealing ring carefully and useDROSSBACH lubricant.

The pipe support must be implemented with the plannedgradient and degree of compacting. For reasons to do withthe static, in the pipeline zone use material from soil groupG1 or G2 that is capable of being well compacted and isfilter stable (see the section entitled ”Filter stableinstallation“).Frequently, for leading percolating water to the perforationsof partial drain or multipurpose pipes the lower area of thepipeline zone is to be consist of dense material throughwhich the water cannot seep. For this purpose, use cohesivesoil or foil on non-cohesive soil with a gradient to theperforations. For pipe static reasons, with drainage pipesmade of plastic the use of concrete for the support andbedding to the perforations is not recommended. Flexibleplastic pipes require a supporting layer in a compactableelastic soil material, so that the pipe/soil interplay and thenecessary bedding reaction pressure can develop.

    FILTER STABLE CONSTRUCTION

Drainage pipes must be laid with suitable filter materials. Ifthis is not done, malfunctions and restrictions on the servicelife may occur as a result of blocked perforations or depositsof fine soil particles in the pipe. The following general information shows the fundamentalbackground. It is not intended to replace concrete measuresbased on the local situation, which have to be made wherenecessary by a specialist planner or in a soil survey.

The choice of the filter material and the dimensions of thefilter layer depends on the soil in place and the perforationwidth of the pipes used:

    • Soil in place

The gravel used around the pipe must be filter stable againstthe soil in place and the soil that is to be drained. For thispurpose it must have a suitable grain distribution.Terzaghi‘s filter rule has proved its value:

    D15 < 4 *d85

i.e. grain Ø of the filter material at 15% by weight < 4 *grain Ø of the soil in place at 85% by weight.

The gravel filter layer must be at least 200 mm thick on allsides, even if multiple graduated material is used.If this condition cannot be complied with, a suitably structuredgeotextile must be used (see ”Leaflet on using geotextilesand geogrids in civil engineering works for road construction“).

    • Perforation width of the drainage pipe

The grain distribution curve of the filter gravel that is usedmust have a grain Ø at 85% by weight that is greater thanthe perforation width of the pipe. The perforation widths ofAGROSIL 1000 and AGROSIL 2500 are between 0.8 mm and1.4 mm in accordance with DIN 4262-1.

When laying the pipes, make sure that the layout is inaccordance with the function. AGROSIL 2500 partial drainand multi-purpose pipes have a lengthways coloured markedon the crown. This marking must be exactly uppermost. Withthe AGROSIL 1000 pipe, the pipe is laid with the smooth flatbottom on the bottom of the trench. The filter and backfill material must be inserted carefully andgradually without being tipped from a height. Compactingin the pipeline zone must be done by hand and with lightweightapparatus only. When doing this, make sure that the pipe isnot pushed at the sides or upwards out of its correct position(e.g. sand cone, rods, etc.). Because of their single-layer wallconstruction and greater flexibility, AGROSIL 1000 pipesrequire even greater care in this regard than the two-layerAGROSIL 2500 pipes. Heavy-duty compactors must not beused until a level of 1 m above the pipe crown is reached.

Shafts made by DROSSBACH for drainage pipes areconstructed as follows:A shaft body with welded sleeves for the inlets and outletsand a sleeve for the shaft pipe, which is inserted into theshaft body. The shaft pipe is cut to length in the field for the exactinstallation height (delivery lengths: 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m or6 m for cutting to length in the field). The shaft pipe then leads in a single nominal width throughto the surface just below the cover.

A fine-toothed saw must be used for cutting. The shaftpipes have a 3-layer wall construction. Make the cut in thetrough at a right angle to the pipe axis so that the resultis a straight end without the webs being cut. The positionof the corrugations can be seen on the outer surface of thepipes (see the illustration at the bottom right). Werecommend marking the cut with a wide marking tape.

    1. Lightweight covers, designed for pedestrian traffic (Class A 15)

These lie directly on the shaft pipe. The shaft pipe can absorbthe weight and the load of the cover. With grids that are designed for pedestrian traffic cut theshaft connector pipe so that the cover is exactly level withthe finished surface.

    2. Heavy duty covers, designed for vehicular traffic (Class B 125 and D 400)

These lie on concrete rings outside the shaft pipes. Theirweight and the load from the covers must be transferredthrough the concrete rings into the soil without the shaftpipes experiencing a vertical load either in the installedposition or through settling.

With covers that are designed for vehicular traffic cut theshaft connector pipe so that there is a minimum clearanceof 50 mm between the upper edge of the shaft pipe andthe lower edge of the cover.

With heavy duty covers, make sure as well that loads cannotbe transmitted into the connector pipes through thesubstructure.

    Class B 125

Lay the concrete ring in a firmly compacted gravel bed orin site-mixed concrete so that the cover does not lie on theconnector pipe. A sliding and separating layer of film or asimilar material must be located between the site-mixedconcrete and the connector pipe.

    Class D 400

Lay the concrete foundation at least 20 cm thick so thatthe cover does not lie on the connector pipe. A sliding andseparating layer of film or a similar material must be locatedbetween the concrete foundation and the connector pipe.

    INSTALLING THE SHAFTS

Drainage pipes are inspected and maintained through theappropriate shafts. With its smooth flat bottom, the AGROSIL-CONTROLLER enables inspection cameras and high-pressureflushing nozzles to be easily inserted into the pipe holders. In contrast, VARIODRÄN shafts retain a certain amount ofdirt in the collecting space and this can be sucked out easilyduring cleaning work. When the drainage installation is handed over to the operatorthere is usually an initial inspection and the system iscleaned as well, if necessary. Following this, inspections andcleaning measures should be carried out at regular intervalsto keep the drainage pipes ready for use permanently.

AGROSIL 2500 drainage pipe and the AGROSIL-CONTROLLERand VARIODRÄN shafts have been verified as being able towithstand the usual flushing pressure of max. 130 bar usedin pipe cleaning today. If rotating chains are to be used asmechanical cleaners only round link chains should be used. The pipe cleaners must chose the right apparatus andmethod of working to ensure that the drainage pipes arenot damaged.

Resistance of the material to water and soils

For its pipes and shafts DROSSBACH uses proven and reliablematerials: PE-HD and PVC-U are resistant to surface andleakage water, and with their resistance in the range of pH2 to pH 11 are, in extreme cases, also resistant to watercontaminated in industrial catastrophes or by water usedin fire fighting. On the other hand, they are stable againsterosion and leaching of ingredients and do not pass anysubstances to the leakage water or the soil.

    H. PLANNING

Outflow of the expected volume of water withoutdamming up

For calculating drainage pipes, check the possible throughflowvolume for a selected nominal width, given an availablepipe gradient, or determine the required nominal width fora volume to be discharged. The basic principles are found in the work sheet ATV-DVWK-A 110 ”Hydraulic Dimensioning and Performance Record ofSewer Conduits and Pipes“, which has now been revisedand published in a new edition in September 2001 (ISBN3-935669-22-4).Important information and standards are also contained inthe ”Directive for Highway Projects (RAS)“, Part DrainageRAS-Ew (1987).

The internal roughness of the pipes is an important factorfor flow losses. Like all plastic pipes with their very smoothnon-porous inner surfaces, AGROSIL 1000 pipes made ofPVC-U and AGROSIL 2500 pipes made of PE-HD have anabsolute pipe wall roughness between 0.005 and 0.5 mm.The perforation has only a slight effect on the outflowperformance. Partial drainage pipes and multi-purpose pipesare unperforated in the lower area, and UP pipes used purelyfor transport purposes do not have any perforations at all.To take account of socket joints, shafts, positional deviationsand perforations, in general a value of 0.5 mm is assumedfor the operating roughness kb, and this can be used fordimensioning using the flat rate concept (RAS Ew:kb = 0.4 mm). With AGROSIL 1000 drainage pipes with internal corrugatedwalls, the roughness values are higher, but, in comparisonwith a smooth-walled AGROSIL 2500 pipe with the samenominal width, the influence effect is compensated forpartly by a slightly larger outflow cross-section.

The outflow in dependence on the pipe gradient forAGROSIL 1000 and AGROSIL 2500 pipes can be seen in thefollowing diagrams.

DIMENSIONINGPipes and shafts for collecting and discharging percolating andsurface water must conform to the following requirements:

For collecting the water from the soil the water inlet surfaceof AGROSIL 1000 and AGROSIL 2500 drainage pipes isgreater than or equal to 50 cm2/m in accordance with DIN4262-1 and is independent of the type of perforation. Thewater inlet surface of a metre length of drainage pipetherefore corresponds to the outflow cross-section of a DN80 pipe! The profile geometry of AGROSIL 1000 and AGROSIL 2500pipes, which has been optimised for their use as drainagepipes provides the inflowing water with secure andpermanent flow paths to the inlet perforations in the troughs. The filter stable bedding of the pipes is absolutely essentialfor a long-term guarantee of the water collection capacityof drainage pipes. The correct choice and dimensioning andthe filter materials depend on the local soil and thehydrological situation at each project and requires greatcare in the planning stage. See the general information inthe last chapter.

Standard inspection methods using cameras and cleaningwith high-pressure machinery are possible without anyproblems with the pipes and shafts shown in this catalogue.See the previous chapter for more details. After clarifying the concrete requirements it may be necessaryto draw up application-based special solutions for particularapplication and load conditions, for example, thoseencountered in tunnel construction, with landfills, or inindustrial and process engineering. Please contact our Engineering Department.

    GUARANTEE OF MAINTENANCEFACILITIES

Thanks to their material and geometrical parameters, drainagepipes made by DROSSBACH have excellent properties foruse in road construction and civil engineering projects. Withits high E-module, PVC-U guarantees the high stability andload-bearing capacity of AGROSIL 1000 pipes. With the AGROSIL 2500 pipes, PE-HD characterises a highdegree of toughness at cold temperatures and extremedeformation capability, without failure, including underdynamic loads. The corrugated wall construction of bothtypes of pipe leads to maximum stability.

In accordance with DIN 4262-1, the ring stiffness ofAGROSIL 1000 and AGROSIL 2500 drainage pipes is testedunder DIN EN ISO 9969 and compliance with the standardsin the category ”SD“ is guaranteed:

    DN 80/100 ring stiffness ≥ 8 kN/m2DN > 100 ring stiffness ≥ 4 kN/m2

However, these ring stiffnesses are measured values fromlaboratory tests to verify defined quality criteria. They provideconditional information only on the behaviour of a pipeunder concrete installation and load conditions and onpermanent suitability for the planned application. The pipe static verification for drainage pipes under theexpected load and the soil and installation conditions of aproject can be carried out in accordance with the relevantcalculation provision ATV-DVWK-A 127. Where required, ask for our ”Property questionnaire for the static calculationof DROSSBACH pipes“. With the help of a calculation programyour data are used to check compliance with the verificationcriteria strength, stability and deformation. In general, it is not difficult to carry out this verificationfor the drainage pipes even under the highest load classSLW 60 and shallower cover. However, a firm support andbedding for the pipes is necessary in accordance with DINEN 1610 ”Laying and testing sewer conduits and pipes“ (seethe previous chapter).Note: verification for type C1 (from F) drainage pipes canonly be done approximately because the calculation modelsassume a circular cross-section.
