Expert ServicesBMT WBM offers a range of expert services to assist legal and insurance investigations.We have extensive expert witness experience in legal and insurance matters covering a broad range of technical issues, but mainly related with industrial accidents and machinery failures and stormwater and coastal flooding.Our clients include insurance companies, legal firms, loss adjusters, engineers and managers for industrial facilities, ports and mines. We have been involved as expert witnesses and in accident investigations in a range of industries including bulk materials handling plant, mobile plant, process plants, high speed machinery, industrial, road and rail accidents.

Services often extend from expert witness reports to become advice to lawyers, insurers and loss adjusters. BMT WBM visits sites and reviews relevant technical evidence so that it can answer the key questions developed by the lawyers in order to prepare an independent report for the Court.Our current experts and their general capabilities are outlined on the opposite page. Steve Saflekos is a principal engineer at BMT WBM with over 35 years’ experience specialising in the design, operation, maintenance and refurbishment of heavy engineering plant, conveyor systems, port related equipment and mining related equipment. Steve has undertaken expert witness roles, superintendent roles, and principal technical advisor roles for numerous projects.

Steve has a background in dealing with large multimillion dollar projects both within Australia and overseas. Rob Widders is a principal engineer at BMT WBM with over 35 years’ experience. Rob has detailed knowledge related to the design, operations and maintenance of large mechanical plant and process equipment used in the mining and mineral processing industries. Rob has successfully completed numerous expert

witness projects including; Technical investigations into failure mode and root cause analysis of machinery and mechanical plant. Shaft fatigue failure due to inadequate design – motorised bicycle (Court attendance). Waste plant composter fatigue failure due to inadequate design (Conclave attendance). John has been an engineering expert witness for both legal and insurance clients.

John’s relevant skills and experience includes; detailed technical analysis, load measurement and detailed technical report for submission to an independent expert for mediation. John has also acted as expert witness for the designer of a large trenching machine which has operated in Western Australia. The project involved detailed analysis of the bucket wheel, conveyor and support systems, and preparation of a detailed report for the designer’s legal firm for use in a pending court action.

Rob Angus is a Registered Professional Engineer with over 30 years of experience as a mechanical engineer in the mining, transport and manufacturing industries.

His current role is Operations Director of BMT WBM Machinery Group where he leads and works with a team of approximately fifty engineers in offices in Australia, Canada and the USA. Richard Douchkov is a senior engineer at BMT WBM with over 30 years’ experience. He has been involved in failure investigations for large mechanical plant and machinery, including the re-design of sub-systems to reduce the risk of failure recurrence and in order to reduce the risk to personnel.

Richard has also undertaken many in-service testing works on rail vehicles, fixed and mobile plant to experimentally capture real in-service operating conditions and loads.

His role also includes processing of the experimental data to identify the machine fault and/or assess the design life of machines and structures.

Arnold Williams is a principal engineer at BMT WBM. Over 24 years continuous service to the industry, Arnold has gained detailed expertise in the areas of design, operation, maintenance and the causes of failure of large equipment, industrial plant and process equipment used in the mining, construction materials handling and mineral processing industries. This expertise has allowed Arnold to act as a subject matter expert in court proceedings, loss adjustment matters and root-cause/failure investigations. Arnold has provided advice to the Supreme Court of NSW, numerous insurance companies and owners and operators of large machinery. Arnold has recognised expertise in stress and fatigue analysis, vibration, wear and operational dynamics, loading assessments and thermal engineering.

Neil has over 30 years’ experience in engineering and is an acknowledged expert in flooding, stormwater and coastal processes. He has worked with the Planning and Environment Court Qld, Land Court Qld, Supreme Court Qld (damages actions), Land & Environment Court NSW, Commissions of Inquiry (various States) and has provided many expert peer reviews. Neil was heavily involved with the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry with reports for six local authorities for LGAQ and also provided expert advice for Ipswich City Council. Neil was also the independent hydraulic expert to the Queensland Government for the North Bank Project.

He has worked on major infrastructure projects as a Hydraulic Specialist including Sydney Third Runway, Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Gateway Bridge and Arterial and several coal ports in Queensland and in

Indonesia, Power Stations in Queensland and Thailand, hydro-electric schemes in PNG and port dredging management at Cairns, Townsville, Weipa and Mackay.
