CRADLE OF CULTURE . . .Tucked away in a corner of Southeast Europe, Macedonia is a country with idyllic natural surroundings, and a somewhat less idyllic history. Alexander the Great, the Romans, Byzantines, the Ottomans, Nazis, and the Communists have all been here and left a mark on the land and its people, leaving behind rich historical attractions. In some of the most stunning and often remote locations, you will find Orthodox monasteries and churches, many dating back for over a thousand years. With their well-preserved mosaics, frescoes and woodcarvings they are well worth a visit. Another site of interest is the Kokino megalithic observatory, dating from 1815 BC, which NASA has ranked the 4th world’s oldest observatory. Ohrid is one of Macedonia’s highlights, and both the lake and the town have been put under UNESCO protection. The lake is among the oldest in the world, with unique flora and fauna, and it is a popular tourist destination in summer. However, Ohrid is much more than a resort to the Macedonians. It carries special spiritual significance as the center of Slavic literacy and home of as many as 365 churches, a Roman amphitheater and Tsar Samoil’s fortress.

The capital, Skopje, a city that has been sourged and flattenes by inviders and earthquakes over the centuries, today is a bubbling city, rapidly catching up with other European capitals. Due to the last government project ‘Skopje 2014’, the capital’s look is completely facelifted, with a memorial house of Mother Teresa, a Triumphal Gate leading to the main city square with numerous monuments, museums and magnificent buildings. And, if you have the slightest interest in history, Skopje is a good place to start your journey as there are rich layers of it on offer. Cross the river Vardar via the 15th century Stone Bridge to an area dominated by massive fortress. Stretching underneath is the old Turkish bazaar. In its bustling cobblestone alleys, you will find ancient mosques, former baths that have been converted into art galleries and tiny shops selling intricate silver filigree jewelry made by local craftsmen.

Macedonia has much to offer and it is a safe and welcoming place to visit. At the same time, it is unknown enough to make you feel like you are trying something new and one thing you are guaranteed to get from people on your return from Macedonia looks of incredulity and curious questions.

. . . LAND OF NATUREAs soon as you leave the hustle and bustle of Skopje, you are in the middle of largely unspoiled nature. Macedonia’s countryside is a sheer heaven for those who enjoy great outdoors.

There are opportunities for hiking, climbing and biking in the mountains scattered across the country.

There, you will see lush colorful forests, spectacular cliffs and thundering waterfalls, and, if you are lucky, spot a hare, fox, lynx or other common or endemic form of wildlife.

SPECIALS MACEDONIAN TRADITIONAL WEDDING

A day about family, singing, dancing and love.

While the sound of drums, trumpets and pipes echoes through the mountains around, the most colorful wedding customs that represent a blend of Christian and pagan traditions are performed with great attention to every detail, marking the three key moments in human life in all civilizations: birth, marriage, and death.

At the grooms house: The in-laws gather in the morning at the groom’s house with the sound of the drums, bagpipe and fiddle. They measure the groom’s traditional costume on a scale, against magic. The groom and everyone else in the household is dressed in authentic traditional costumes, by Macedonian colorful folklore, performing the “Pletenica” custom while singing the song “Pletenica”.

The bread (the essential food): The woman who stays in the house and looks after it until the bride arrives is making and baking bread (“pogaca”). Another bread (“pogaca”) is taken up the attic by the mother-in-law. The bundle gift and the third bread (“pogaca”) are taken to the bride by the mother-in-law.

Getting the best man and his wife: Calling the best man and his wife, who treat those who want to drink a glass of Macedonian brandy (“rakija”). The best man’s wife brings bread (“pogaca”) and a gift for the marrying couple (any other gift plus a small tub for bathing a baby so the newly-wed would have offspring and the best man and his wife would baptize). The groom’s best man and his wife join in and all of them together on a wagon and saddled horses head to the bride’s house.

At the bride’s house: At the same time, the bride’s original costume is measured on a scale without looking at how much it weighs. Then, the bride is dressed and her braids made. In order to start preparing the bread “Pletenica”, a hat with a peacock feather is put on the bride’s head over the veil while the bride is holding a decorated rod from an oxen yoke in her hand. The kneading tub (“noshtvi”) is taken out and the bread is kneaded while singing the song “Pletenica”. The bride washes up and leads the dance (“oro” – danced in a circle, with men and women holding one another by hand) holding the yoke rod. It starts slow at first and then speeds up. The rest of the clothes and bundle gifts in chests, ready to be taken to the groom’s house, are taken out and guarded by young children. At the yard gate three girls adorn the in-laws with patches and boxwood with white and red string.

Buying the bride: As soon as the bride notices the groom from the window, she looks at him through the wedding ring. The groom’s brother, the bridesmaid and the groom have to negotiate for the price and buy the bride from her brother or sister. After unlocking the bride’s room, they walk in, congratulate and the groom gets adorned with a patch and flower while the others are tied with long woven clothes over their shoulder. The bride accompanied by the groom’s brother and the bridesmaid enters the room where the in-laws are and greets them. After the groom’s father and the bride’s father bid up to three times, the groom’s mother throws the bride’s bundle gift. The bread is cut, the groom’s father and the bride’s father race in biting it since it is believed that the grandchildren will look like the one who was first to bite off the bread. A whole round baking tray with cheese pie (“banica”) covered with fried eggs is brought to the groom. A successful spin of the whole pie in the baking tray at once signifies an enjoyable love life. All the guests get gifts, such as towels, shirts or socks. The younger brother takes out the bride and gives her water to drink from her right shoe so her journey would be as light as water. Then he entrusts the bride to the groom’s brother and the bridesmaid. And, the dancing start again, while the children guarding the chests ask for money for the bride’s clothes. The best man and his wife pay and load the chests on the horse wagon.

Leaving her parents’ home: After the dance, the groom’s brother, the bridesmaid and the bride get on the wagon while the groom gets on a white horse. On departure, if the bride turns and looks back at her home she shall feel very sad but her children will take after her family. The bride bids farewell to her parents who do not attend their daughter’s wedding.

Welcoming the bride: Prior to the bride’s arrival at the groom’s house a couple of young people run to announce the good news of the bride’s arrival. A decorated brandy bottle is awarded to the fastest one. The bride is welcomed in the following way: the groom’s brother, the bridesmaid, the bride and the groom stand in front of the gate. Up to one year old baby (“podavce”) is handed to the bride who is supposed to make it cry by pinching and slapping its cheeks so her babies wouldn’t cry a lot. The baby (“podavce”) is given presents. The mother-in-law ties an apron (“skutaca” or “futa”) around the bride’s waist and puts a white scarf on her head in order for the daughter-in-law to be a good housewife. Coins, wheat and candies are thrown from a sieve over the gathered guests; one bundle made of coins, wheat and candies is thrown on the roof tiles by the bride in order to be sweet, rich and happy. Two loaves of bread are put under the bride’s armpits so everything would be a whole. The father-in-law puts a long woven cloth around the newly-wed couple and brings them over the doorstep into the house. As soon as she walks in, the bride drops the loaves. If the loaves fall face up, the couple will have boys whereas if the loaves fall face down, they will have girls. The bread “Pletenica” is cut over the bride’s head signifying that if she has a hidden secret, it remains on her head (referring to a sin related to virginity). The bread left on the attic is taken down and fed to the pigs since they always dig forward; it is never given to chicken. The groom, groom’s parents, groom’s brother and his wife, groom’s sister and her husband, bridesmaid, best man and his wife, groom’s man and his wife are given gifts and in return they give money to the bride. The song starts again.

THEWEDDING DAY

Page 23: Macedonia Travel 2014

44 45

SPECIALS MACEDONIAN TRADITIONAL WEDDING

The wedding: The wedding continues with a church ceremony (for non-Christians alternatively, a civil marriage will be arranged in the yards of the monastery) and a wedding lunch in the Monastery complex. The best man sits at the head of the table, next to him on one side sits the father-in-law with the groom and on the other side the groom’s man with the groom’s brothers, next to them the other men form the family whereas women sit further down the table. The bread (“pogaca”) made by the best man’s wife is placed on the table and a fir three decorated with apples, walnuts and colorful ornaments is placed in the middle of it. A hand-woven carpet is placed on the ground behind them on which the presents are put. Two groups of singers invite the bride with a song to join the others at the table. The bride comes carrying bread, gives it to the barker who says loud: “Look at the bread she has baked”, indicating that the rumor that the bride could not make bread was a lie. Before the lunch the bread is divided to the people sitting at the table by a boy and a girl. They race who will finish first since it is believed that whoever finishes first will be the first to marry.

Anouncing the gifts: The barker blesses the table and announces by shouting who brought what gift. From the best man’s wife a tub so strong that 15 kids could be bathed in it, baking tray, a barrel with brandy and sweetest pie. From the groom’s best man and his wife a table as large as a threshing yard and a baking tray with a pie as large as the table itself. From the groom’s brother and his wife a round board for making bread (“krag”) but without a rolling pin for the sisters-in-law to get on well. All the gifts brought to the newly-wed are blessed, the guests are treated to the pie and bread but some is also left in the bag. The hand woven cloth is spread, clay plates and wooden spoons are set next to the main table where more distant relatives, friends and neighbors from the village sit. Rakiya (the brandy), potato salad and lamb soup is served. Groups of three singers on each side of the table sing wedding songs.

The celebration: Before lunch the bride accompanied by the groom’s brother and bridesmaid kisses hand. First of all, she kisses the best man’s and his wife’s hand, who make them bow to the ground up to three times so the bride would remember that “in front of the best man water should not be stepped on”, then she kisses hand of the rest of the guests. Lunch is served – each guest can choose from two dishes – stews: potatoes with lamb and beans with lamb. Goat meat is never served since the kid was believed to be a devil.

The bride leads the so called “Shareno oro” dance, the groom, mother-in-law, father-in-law, bridesmaid, groom’s brother, best man’s wife, best man, groom’s man’s wife, groom’s man, groom’s brother’s wife, groom’s brother, and the rest of the guests- woman next to man follow, which is why the dance is called the colorful dance.

The virginity proof: The bride sends brothers-in-law to her parents’ house with bread wrapped in her towel. She ties towels around their heads and they leave on horseback. If the bride is a virgin, the bread is taken to her mother as a whole if not, the bread is taken cut. The bride’s mother treats the brothers-in-law to fried chicken, poked on sticks and decorated with apples, something green and red-white string. The brothers-in-law return to the bride who gives them a gift, after which the dance with the chicken is performed.

Taking to water: The custom “Taking to water” follows. The bride is taken to water by the brother-in-law, the bridesmaid and the rest of the wedding guests. Two jugs are filled with water and emptied up to three times. The third time they are filled and the bride carries them to her new home spilling a little bit of the water on the way so that the way home would always be easy for her.

Virginity celebration: The last custom is “Blaga Rakija” (“Caramelized Brandy”). White sheets with red (blood) spots are spread on the balcony of the house as a proof of bride’s virginity. The groom’s mother serves a strong caramelized brandy to the guests, which symbolizes the end of the wedding.

Within a month after the wedding, we publish a catalogue with the most memorable activities along with a DVD from the wedding day.

Best period: the best period is after Easter, from May up to the beginning of St Peter’s Day lent until July 12, then until August 14 when lent for Bogorodica begins and lasts until August 28, after that up to October 30. Our recommendation is any day in May 2013, immediately after Easter which makes it possible for dyed Easter eggs to be brought to the wedding since Easter celebrations last until the Holly Saviors Day.
