Me, Having My Say……… Send ‘Your Say’ to: [email protected]

Ok, so, it’s 2009! Wonder what that will mean for us? Frankly, I was very glad to seethe back of 2008! Overall, and with everything considered, it was not a great year for mepersonally, especially December, it seemed it was just one disaster after the other, literallywith fatal accidents, and injuries and funerals, along with my stupid fear of travellingand feelings of sorrow and grief and still trying to carry on at work, I found it almostimpossible to get into the Christmas spirit. Truly, if it wasn’t Carly’s birthday onChristmas Day, I think we might have given it a miss altogether! That is the reason youdid not get a January Mac News by the way, it’s not an excuse, but a reason. Really sorry about that, I didtry, but just could not get myself together, just didn't have the inclination. Honestly, for a few weeks, I wasjust too depressed to even turn the computer on and I even contemplated giving up doing it . But, here I am,typing away again, I guess maybe time is the best healer after all. Thanks to all for your words ofencouragement and support. It really does help.Anyway, January 2009 has started off okay so far, We have been busy with my niece’s wedding in PortFairy on the beach. One of my friends had a baby boy and all is well and to top off January, our daughterCarly has become engaged to her long time beau, Ross Jarrett. We are very happy for them as they have onlyjust purchased their first home in Kirkstall. So, all in all, not a bad start, I only hope it keeps going thisway! So, what have you been up to so far this year?? Want to write in and let us all know? Go ahead.MADA: Well, CHANGE IS GOOD RIGHT!! We have had a little swap around of jobs, Your new President isMark Todd, Secretarial duties will be carried out by Tamara Hardy, and Janet Angel will continue on asTreasurer. So, there you are, your new MADA committee. Ready to lend a hand when you need it. Give Mark acall on 5576 1143, or Tamara on 5576 1060.MAC NEWS CONTRIBUTORS/ADVERTISERS: Not to mention any names, you know who you are, but wereally need to say THANK YOU. Your support is very much appreciated. A HUGE THANK YOU, to Mr GerardAuld, from the Moyne Shire for doing some printing for us. Fantastic! Makes life just that little bit easier.Community Auction 2009: Will be going ahead as usual. The third weekend in March (which is the15th, this year). So, we need you to really have a good look around your place and clear out all that stuffthat has been collecting dust, just might be someone else\s treasure you know! We will once again hold theevent down at the Rec Reserve, and of course stallholders are welcome. We will see what entertainment wecan come up with for the kids on the day, so you can enjoy bargain hunting!

Xmas Lights Walk : so, how fun was that?? I have to say, I was a little worried early in the night, Ididn’t think anyone was going to show up, or that no-one was gonna turn their lights on, but wow people, what a delightful surprise! You did good! I was happy, and I think you all were as well. A good night, thanks to all who took part in any way. Just my opinion, but I think we should be doing it again this yeartoo, so start planning your display now, outdo yourself, it’s so worth it.

JenetteOK, that’s my say ! Now, Rose, before you go off about my grammar, I know, ok! And you know by now, that I write like I talk. Most of the time, grammar is the least of my worries! But, if it worries you too much, we will have to get an editor for the editor!!Public responses are always most welcome, it doesn’t matter if you agree with my point of view or not! I will publish it either way, that is because, this is not my newsletter, it’s yours and you are always welcome and even expected to have your say. As the editor, Ichoose what goes in this newsletter, if you don't like what is contained within, send me in something you do want!! Easy really.

Send ‘Your Say’ into P.O. Box 52, Macarthur Vic 3286.

NORMANDY, FRANCE - Jacques left nothing to chance when he decided to commit suicide. Hestood at the top of a tall cliff and tied a noose around his neck. He tied the other end of the rope to alarge rock. He drank some poison and set fire to his clothes. He even tried to shoot himself at thelast moment. He jumped and fired the pistol. The bullet missed him completely, but cut through thehanging rope instead. Freed of the threat of hanging, Jacques plunged into the sea. The suddenplunge into the freezing waters extinguished the flames and apparently made him vomit the poisonas well. He was dragged out of the water by witnesses on the beach below the cliff and was taken toa hospital, where he died of hypothermia.

SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW This Month We Meet..Bernie WarrenQ 1. Please tell us where you were born: I was born at a private hospital in David St Preston.

Q 2. Do you want to tell us when?: November 8th 1937.

Q 3. Why did you move to Macarthur? And do you have any family connections or relative history in Macarthur?:My wife Joan & I had bought Mary Poynton’s little house in 1997 so we could spend holidays with Bernice, Dave &their children, and also Joans mother Eileen, sister Carol and brother-in-law Pete in Hamilton. Besides, apart from11 years in Hamilton from 1961 to 1972 we had both lived in Melbourne all our lives, and two houses & gardenswere becoming a bit much for us, so we sold the Keilor house and moved here in 2005.

Q 4. Where did you do your schooling?: My education began in 1942 at Bell St Primary in Preston, and due toseveral changes of address over the ensuing years, was followed by time at West Preston, East Preston, Pender’sGrove (Thornbury) state schools and finally Preston Tech, where I completed my Senior Technical Certificate inPlumbing & Gas Fitting in 1953.

Q 5. Do you keep in contact with anyone you studied with?: No-one in particular, but I had 2 other mates I‘knocked around’ with. Max, Neville & I enjoyed camping, shooting, more shooting, and cars: until eventually, wediscovered girlfriends.

Q 6. What do you think is the best thing about living in Macarthur or surrounding district?: That’s easy: things likefresh clean air, tank water, the stars at night (you don't see in the city sky), friendly people, no traffic or trams, apeaceful environment, having my own shed, no mynahs, being back with Hamilton Rifle Club again after away for30 years, the occasional bunny and so many other things.

Q 7. Where else have you live?: I have lived in Preston ( 3 houses), Springvale, Thornbury (2), Reservoir (2),Hamilton (2), Keilor and finally, Macarthur.

Q 8. What 3 things keep you most busy?: Most Saturdays I shoot with Hamilton Rifle Club and am also Secretary, and perform the same role in the Historical Society as well as being an affiliate member of RSL, volunteer driver etcfor Macarthur Outreach and a member of the board of trustees of Macarthur Cemetery.

Q 9. What do you think has changed for the better about Macarthur & District?: Hard to say, not knowing enoughabout what it was like earlier. But I can say life is better for folk here than if they lived in Melbourne. There, no-onecares about what happens outside once they close the front door. Here though, it’s good to see that people areinterested in each other, they care, especially about how older residents are getting on: a sort of informal ‘Outreach’attitude, and long may it be so.

Q 10. What’s something about you that most people probably don't know?: Dunno really, My professionalbackground of 45 years is insurance & risk management, and I would have thought some of the things I say and domight give a hint of an outgoing interest in such matters.

Q 11. What are you really good at, your hobbies & pastimes?: I love my target shooting, despite the increasing lossof aural acuity (hearing) and am equally rewarded when I am able to pass on the benefits of my 40 odd yearsinvolvement to less experienced shooters and newer members of the Club. I also enjoy going for a ‘burn’ in my old‘53 Holden whenever the opportunity arises.

Q 12. What is your favourite food & who cooks it best?: That’s easy, whatever Joan cooks!

Q 13. If you had another life, what would you like to come back as next time?: Probably just as myself again, although I’d like to have a better recollection of what was happening in the world during the period 1937-1945. Imight therefore like to wind my birth date back so I would remember those years better than I do.

Q 14. What or who did you want to be when you grew up?: During my secondary school years I read a lot aboutarchaeology and would have like to work in that field. I still cannot pass by recently dug soil without looking to seewhat the excavation might have uncovered.

Q 15. Who would you like to see interviewed in the future?: Nita Trigger (see Nan, I told you people are interested!)

Thanks for your time Bernie, we have enjoyed getting to know you a little better. Ok, who is next ????Yes, it could be YOU!

A HOLIDAYMAKER got a nasty shock when he learned that the strange bleeding bumps on his head were notbites or shingles, but live maggots. Mr Dallas, from Colorado, looked for medical help when the unusuallumps appeared on his scalp after a holiday to Belize during the summer. One doctor thought they might have been caused by a gnat bite. Another believed his problem was shin-gles. But then the bumps took on a life of their own and began to move.A doctor discovered five bot fly larvae living inside Aaron Dallas's head, near the top of his skull. This was afew weeks after a mosquito had apparently placed them there."I'd put my hand back there and feel them moving. I thought it was blood coursing through my head. Icould hear them. I actually thought I was going crazy," said Dallas, of Carbondale.Bot flies rely on mosquitoes, stable flies, and other insects to carry their eggs to a host - and in this casethe host was Dallas."It was weird and traumatic," he said. "I would get this pain that would drop me to my knees."After their discovery the parasites were removed by a doctor. Dallas's wife teased him about it afterwards, but didn't find the experience funny."It's much funnier to everyone else. It makes my stomach turn over. It was cruel,'' he said.Bot fly infections are fairly routine in parts of Central and South America.
