Lesson Plan Title: Hypertension
and its Prevention
Patient: 25-45 y/o
Presenter: Jumarly G.

Setting: Bagong Lipunan Health
Center

Brief Patient Summary:
People at the age of 24-45 y/o are
prone to develop hypertension. People
at this age should be informed about
methods on how to prevent this kind of
disease that would cause furthermore
complications. Hypertension is not a
part of healthy aging.
3
Introduction to the Topic:
In adults, it is generally agreed that a
blood pressure is abnormally high when
the systolic pressure is equal to or greater
than 140 mmHg and the diastolic pressure
is equal to or higher than 90 mmHg.
Hypertension is not a single disease entity
in the usual sense, but rather a major
indicator of the prognosis for future
development of cardiovascular,
cerebrovascular, and renal disease.
4
It is very important for people to be
informed regarding this kind of disease
because hypertension is a major threat
to life and its health. Prevention
methods are very important especially
at the age where people are prone to
hypertension. It would be easier for
people to avoid this kind of disease
rather than to have lifetime
maintenance for hypertension.
5
Overall Goal:
The clients will be able to understand
and explain hypertension in terms of its
definition, risk factors, complication, and
its prevention.

Flow of
Discussion!
12
What is BP?
• Blood Pressure (BP) is
the pressure exerted by
circulating blood upon the
walls of blood vessels, and is
one of the principal vital signs.
Facts:
• BP increases as we get older.
• “approximately 60% of people
25-45 y/o and older have high
BP. However, high blood
pressure is not a natural part
of healthy aging.
What is Hypertension?
• Also known as High blood
Pressure.
• When blood pressure stays
elevated over time. A
consistent blood pressure
reading of 140/90mm Hg or
higher.
• Usually cannot be cured, in
most cases can be prevented
• uncontrolled BP rises and falls
throughout the day, but when
the BP stays elevated over
time, then it is called High
Blood Pressure/Hypertension.
16
Risk Factors:
• Family history of Hypertension
• Overweight
• Excessive sodium (salt) intake
• Lack of physical exercise
• Alcohol consumption
COMPLICATIONS!
18
Arteries
• As people age,
arteries
throughout the
body can harden
which can cause
heart and
kidneys to work
harder.
Heart
• High BP can
cause blocked
flow, causing
heart attack or
congestive heat
failure.
Kidneys
• Over time, high
BP can narrow
and thicker blood
vessels, causing
kidneys to fail.
Eyes
• High BP can
cause blood
vessel to burst or
bleed and may
result in
blindness.
Brain
• High BP can
cause break in
the blood vessel,
which can cause
a stroke.

Prevention Of
Hypertension And Its
Benefits
1. Follow a healthy eating
pattern• Fruits and
vegetables daily.
• Make low fat food
choices
• low saturated fat
and cholesterol
foods.
prevent high blood pressure
naturally.wmv
27
2. Reduce sodium (salt)
intake• Buy fresh / frozen
or canned “no salt
added” vegetables
• Limit smoked,
cured, processed
meat
• Use herbs and
spices to season
• Reduce amount of
salt at the table and
during cooking
3. Maintain a healthy
weight
• Blood pressure
rises as body
weight increases
• Losing weight
can lower BP
4. Exercise
• Exercise as a
lifestyle
modification is
beneficial to a
wide variety of
health
conditions,
specifically to
hypertension
5. Limit alcohol
consumption• Too much alcohol
can raise BP
• Alcohol has
calories which
can make you
gain weight
• Drink in
moderation
6. Quit smoking
• Smoking injures
blood vessels and
speed up the
hardening of
arteries
7. Medical care
• Seek medical
care if you have
high blood
pressure so that
doctors will be
able to prescribe
medication.
